Certain time of the year you often hear the call of a specific bird which signifies that change is near. You can’t see this bird but you can hear it
Cloud formation, ripples in the water, and many other tell-tale signs to inform us that the mighty Northwest Wind (Kuki) is about to fall upon us. Bringing with it destructive winds and heavy rain
Hour and a half phone call with my big Bala #jimibani was so refreshing. The call almost seemed familiar; like the unseen bird whose sound echoes across the village when change is nigh
Metaphorically speaking, we all have this bird in our lives. Constantly calling to notify us that change is here. The change can be good, or it can be bad. It’s a matter of listening to its call, and be prepared for when the change comes
👀 Right now at Queensland's very own Billie Brown Studio 👉 The world premiere of 'My Name is Jimi'. Presented by Queensland Theatre, the Centre of Contemporary Arts and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. Based on a story by Dimple Bani, Jimi Bani, and co-created with Jason Klarwein.
In My Name is Jimi, charismatic actor & storyteller Jimi Bani (Mabo, The Straits, Redfern Now) finally tells his story, that of his family & his place of home – Mabuiag Island, a remote speck in the sparkling blue of the Torres Strait & the keeper of thousands of years of rich history & culture.
Now, with just a few hundred people fanning its flame, the story, colour, characters, challenges & history of the Wagadagam culture come to the stage in what is a truly memorable live theatre experience @qld_theatre
My name is Jimi unfolds through music, dance, stand-up & fireside storytelling, with four remarkable generations of one family on the stage - Jimi’s grandmother, mother, son & brothers come together to share incredible yarns of totems, traditions & childhood memories.
A true celebration on stage - Jimi performs alongside his son Dmitri, mother Agnes, & grandmother Petharie with his brothers Conwell & Richard Bani.
Drawing directly on the lived experiences of the Bani family & their role as leaders of the Wagadagam tribe of Mabuiag Island, the stories span the generations – Jimi jokes in three languages with his grandmother, & then tortures his son with spontaneous break-dancing. An Australian story, and a world story of family and preserving the culture & language of Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait.
A story everyone needs to hear & to see!!! 👌
