A pair of Malabar Pit Vipers we saw last Monsoon during our visit to KCRE.

Seeing a mating pair of pit-vipers is a rare sight, and the added bonus was to see a female orange morph with a darker morph male. Another interesting thing was to see a leech feeding on the male which was almost full and about to fall off.

If cobra is the king of Western Ghats, then the Green Vine snake is the mysterious Queen of the jungle. She can appear out of nowhere and disappears in no time and so smoothly that you accept it as magic. Vine snakes are mildly venomous and very good with camouflaging so much so that you won't notice them even if they are right in front of you. Luckily I spotted 8 of them during my stay at Agumbe. . . .

The beautifully thrilling trip to agumbe came to an end. But this hatchling of Calotes rouxii on the last Day at Kalinga Centre For Rainforest Ecology fills my heart with joy and a new hope. I plan to spend more and more time in the western ghats from now on and study as much I can about the beautiful herpetofauna every year. Goodbye for now.

This colourful tiger beetle, though tiny, is a superbly quick and nimble predator which hunts for smaller insects. With large bulging eyes, long legs and curved mandibles, they disappear faster than u can spot them. On a size to size comparison, the tiger beetle can outrun the fastest human which is Usain Bolt by 22 times. Let me count how many of them had flied away before I could finally take this shot, one, two, three... #wildlifephotography #macrophotography #macrolife #macro #macrolens #wildlifeconservation #wildearth #rainforestconservation #rainforest #agumbe #westernghats #southindia #nature #insects #colorfulinsects #tigerbeetle #metaliccolors #monsoon #kcre #usainbolt

A PERFECT camouflage!!
There's a stick insect hanging onto the tip of this tree branch. Watch closely... I've attached another zoomed-in pic of the stick insect where you can see it holding onto the branch tip .. You can also see its eyes. It was almost impossible to spot it with naked eyes. I almost missed it. NATURE IS FASCINATING!

This vivid orange phased Malabar pit viper (Trimeresurus malabaricus) was observed in nearly the same exact spot each day and night throughout the duration of my stay at the Kalinga Center for Rainforest Ecology! It is amazing how long some ambush predators can remain completely motionless while waiting for their next meal to come their way. Happy world snake day! This species can be found in a wide variety of colors and is endemic to the Western Ghats, India.

#Reshared from @vandan_jhaveri - "Net-casting spider"
Not all spiders make web as seen in the horror movies, (round orb web), there are different types of spider webs; Funnel web, circus tent, to name few. There are certain spiders which do not make web(for capturing prey) at all, like spitting spider or Scorpion mimic-Jumping spider.
.
There is one spider who uses the web in different way all together, it does not simply make the web and wait for insect to fall into it. It captures the prey itself, by throwing it's web onto them, it's an active hunter, An Ambush predator "Net-casting spider"
.
Net-casting spiders are found across the world in tropical and sub-tropical regions and are also known as ogre-faced spiders because of their distinctive big eyes, which help them to see prey during night-time hunts.
.
These spider spins a small rectangular web, which they throws over the victim like a net, web has a spring like action, making it difficult for the prey go get away. They also anchor some thread on the ground which acts as a trip wire and informs them of any activity beneath.
.
These spiders seem to learn the habit of their prey, and changes its hunting routine and create a trap near insects regular movement pattern to increase its chances of capturing the food.
.
During the day time they rest/hide among the bushes and looks just like a twing owing to its thin brown body and long legs also they way they align body on the branches helps them camouflag.
