Hammerhead 100 – 50 miles 2nd place. First time racing on the Florida Greenway Trails and fist time crossed over the much spoke about Land bridge. We had a fun time pre-riding a full lap the day before and I was very curious to see what this track had to offer. There was for sure lots of sugar sand and loose pine needles which made everything much slower than everyone was used to but it didn’t bother me that much in the race thankfully.
The further west we got on the trails the more interesting they become, for sure it was a great time to explore something new for me. Race went very well and it was my last practice run before the big Marathon Nationals so I’m happy with my effort. Sadly, after the first 25 mile lap my new hydration pack malfunctioned and I was carrying it around for almost 20 miles and was unable to drink. It was a bummer and I knew it cost me lots of wasted time trying to make it work as well as lots of energy since I was doing pretty much a whole XC race in the middle of an endurance race with no nutrition and water. But I soldiered through it, finally dropped this dead weight when I could at a feed zone and got my first sip of refreshing water after a very long time. It felt so good that I got a quick energy boost and was able to catch up and pass many riders at that point and sail home strongly to the finish. Lots of cool friends of mine raced with me or cheered for me, it was for sure a well spent weekend with lots of bike riding and laughter. Now I’m in the last preparations for the big monty…
