Here's a #moodboard for my latest film Address: Unknown.
The first few people who read the script compared it to Kids (1995) because of how uncensored it is. Before writing it I had never watched the film but once I did the boys smoking on the couch became my favorite scene.
Spike Lee wrote the bible for black indie films and School Daze definitely influenced our characters looks.
"Kids" (1995) written by Harmony Korrine & directed by Larry Clark. • "Kids" has been causing controversy since the moment it was released. Korrine wrote the critically acclaimed script at just 19 years old and Clark's depiction of it is a raw, honest and slightly disturbing view of what youth looked like in urban New York City in the 1990s. Causing an uproar from the older generations and an upstanding applause from the younger ones, "Kids" became an instant cult classic and is a stable film in skate culture today.
By far, my favorite thing about NY was how openly people approached to chat. Besides a woman who walked w me a ways to Central Park to talk about my New Balances and sneakers in general, the best place to buy running shoes, and where to get lunch, when I took this picture, a man stopped in opposite traffic to comment on the mural. "That's dope right?!" He yelled. The kid, Harold Hunter, was a fixture of the East Village skateboarding scene, but died in 2006 from a cocaine-induced heart attack. The man in the car told me Harold was in the movie Kids. He used to see him around the area all the time and that I should watch Kids and I'll like it regardless of whether I know anything about the scene or not. I just watched it, can't say I LIKED it--more that I felt like an anthropologist in a sweaty jungle. But I have a new appreciation for this pocket of time and what the man in the car was getting at. Common stuff, stuff that changes, and marveling over time. The Harold Hunter Foundation was founded in this kids memory to support city kids interested in skateboarding. I will never forget when I first saw Chloe Sevigny's face grace the screen of Camera 3 Cinema in San Josed when KIDS was brand spankin' new. I remember it was rated NC-17 but, we were all 15 and HEAVILY relating to much of the movie. I became obsessed with Chloe Sevigny. I can say that she is in the top 5 of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in my life. All the roles she plays in each movie she's in, are done so perfectly. And if you know the scene in Brown Bunny with Vincent Gallo then you know I died. This amazing woman is such an inspiration to me all across the board. I could draw those blue pools of intensity over and over again. 💧
