@outofthewoods said, "I wandered deep into the Entiat region of the Cascades.
I haven’t done too much exploring in this area, so it was nice to see some new scenes. The hike was long, nearly 8 miles in. With nearly 2000 feet elevation gain right in the last mile and a half. But once we got to the lake it all became very worth it, we also were surprised to get a few snow flurries right before approaching the lake. We got there, took in the view for a few minutes, and then started setting up camp while light snow flurries floated around. Right as our tents were set up and we were starting to blow up our sleeping pads and get everything organized, the light flurries turned into a dumping of snow quickly accumulating to around an inch within an hour.
The wind was blowing snow sideways and we all ended up making and eating dinner in our separate tents but we all woke up to a winter wonderland which was absolutely amazing!
Congrats to last night's contest winner!

My name is Mikaela and I usually just tell Starbucks baristas "however you want" when they ask how to spell it. I learned to love the outdoors before I could walk in my dad's backpack while he skied and hiked and snowshoed. This is my favorite outfit and I bought two of both the shirt and the shorts. I hate grapefruit flavored anything and sunbathing is my favorite way to relax. The apple bottom jeans song (which I know is called Low) is my favorite old school jam and I have a serious SunIn addiction. My husband-to-be and I met at a day camp when we were kids. I'm recovering from being debilitatingly shy and social anxiety is still something I deal with a lot. Mac n' cheese is my favorite food group and I spend way too much time making my dog's voice and pretending she's a communist. I was homeschooled all the way through high school and graduated college at 20. I am deeply fascinated by terrorism and nuclear weapons and dreamed of working for the CIA for most of high school and college. I'm scared of the dark and hate public transportation with a burning passion. I haven't used a plastic grocery bag since 2014. I like unhealthy amounts of bass and struggle with having space for outdoor gear or space for my sub. I never felt like I could relate to a label until hipster and millennial came along and I am proudly both. I really like words and introductions are my favorite. I have a weakness for coffee, especially hipster coffee shops and finding new restaurants is one of my passions. I love to cook and try new recipes every week. This is my very favorite time of year, until the seasons change. I think I just love the beautiful newness of a changing world. Noticing the beauty in the little things is my specialty. As a kid, I used to desperately wish I would wake up in the Oregon Trail times. I don't have a good relationship with my mom, but my dad is one of my best friends. I walk fast and hike slow. I think bunnies are adorable. And squirrels. I have a thing for cuddly pests. Kenzie was supposed to be my sister's dog, but she ended up being my girl. I've had her since she was just weeks old.

We parked the car and sat here watching the sunrise and moon set all at the same time; creating the most beautiful palette of colors. Fun fact: I only added contrast to this photo. #LetsGoPlaces#CHR#ad
Went on the coolest hike I'd been on all year! (pun intended) Although we got caught in a bit of a snow storm up there, I finally got to check out some beautiful seracs in great company & I was sooo happy to get the chance to hike in some snow!! All in all, was a beautiful adventure... ☃️
When hunting boulders, it may be necessary to sneak up on them while camouflaged by shadows.
Moving off a low start on 2 two-fingers pockets to another two-finger pocket is the crux of this problem. ✌🏼😬

Captured here is one of my favorite sunsets. Very pretty, but these girls and their sense of humor are what made it so perfect! Love you guys so much and thanks again for coming to Montana and braving the wild with me! 😂😉

I guess that makes @arodclimbs...a flower? He stayed incredibly chill and kept @climbingcoachbradley safe while this stinging critter hung out on him the entire climb. Turns out, it was after the salt on his clammy hands 🤷🏼♀️ #climberhands
I was 17 when I got a text from my boyfriend that he was in the hospital, he'd attempted suicide. My world turned upside down. I've spent the last five and a half years coming to terms with the reality that is mental health. 1 in 4 people struggle with some form of mental health issue. That's a terrifying statistic. It is real and it is present and there is no cure. There's no magic combo of meds or amount of therapy or following your dreams that cures it. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. Some days, weeks, months, even years are good, some aren't. 1 in 4 struggle with mental health issues but the statistic of those that are affected is much higher. In the days and weeks and months following that day, I felt so helpless. There was nothing I could do except love him and most days that felt absolutely inadequate.
Almost six years later, we're on the brink of marriage and the last few years have been some of the best of my life. I am not naive, I know that the future won't be perfect. I know good days don't last forever, but I'm determined to do the little I can do to help.
Talk about it. Your life isn't perfect, my life isn't perfect. We are scarred and mended and all of us are living with demons. You are not alone. Know that. Make sure your friends, your family, your coworkers, your followers know that. There is no struggle that cannot be shared. There is no time or no place that love cannot be found. Be big, be brave, be bold. Love fiercely. And please, don't ever give up.
I've never shared this story on social media, but in scrolling today, I saw back to back that it was #worldmentalhealthday and then the tragic death of climber Hayden Kennedy and my heart was heavy and I wanted to share.
I dare you all to share. Share here in the comments, share at home, on your own feed, but please don't be silent.
Love you all, lots. 💛
"The practice of tenkara fishing began in Japan more than two centuries ago, and it has lured in a host of new practitioners for one simple reason: It’s the easiest possible way to get a line on the water." - #GIexpert Dan Nelson. Tenkara uses just a rod, line and a fly. The simplicity of gear makes it perfect for beginners but also draws experienced fisherman. New to the sport? We suggest checking out Yvon Chouinard's book "Simple Fly Fishing".

"I want a life that sizzles and pops and makes me laugh out loud. And I don't want to get to the end or to tomorrow, even and realize that my life is a collection of meetings and pop cans and errands and receipts and dirty dishes. I want to eat cold tangerines, and sing out loud in the car with the windows open, and wear pink shoes, and stay up all night laughing, and paint my walls the exact color of the sky right now." - Shawna Niequist #WereOutThere#LiveYourSomeday#takesomeoneoutdoors#wearemarmot#whatgivesyoulife#itsgreatoutthere#Repost @marmot

The mental try hard needed to balance psych + stress on comp days is as important as the physical try hard.
Thanks to all the awesome friends who shouted encouragement, shared pads, and spotted on Saturday. Y’all are the reason comps are worth it. And congrats on all your successes! 👏
The Hound Ears comp was a ton of fun. That said, I also spent a lot of time on the struggle bus. The conditions were soupy, the holds were sharp, and I wasn’t able to repeat a couple hard problems from last year. Placing in my category seemed unlikely.
We tend to be our own harshest critics. Turns out everyone was climbing on those same sharp holds in the same soupy conditions, and we were all riding that same struggle bus. With a lot of try hard and struggle, I wound up topping enough boulders to place 1st in Women’s Advanced. 🥇😲

My alarm has gone off before 5am more times this year than in the rest of my life combined, but each and every time has been so worth it. Today, Kenzie hiked to a firetower and was v v brave on the 143 steps to the top.
Last weekend, we tried this hike at 9am and the parking lot and road leading to it was overflowing. What a difference three hours can make. Had this place all to ourselves at sunrise.
One of my favourite wild plants: fireweed. In summer, it’s colourful purple, but the nickname comes from its fall appearance when the flowers are gone and the leaves and stems turn ember red (second photo). For me, this and Indian paintbrush are the West and the high country.
What does your beta dance look like? 💃
In a few hours a whole forest of climbers will be route reading and beta dancing at the Hound Ears Triple Crown Bouldering Comp. Good luck everyone! See you out there.
