For the past couple of seasons I've been periodically searching a seemingly PERFECT looking sandstone outcropping for Mountain Kingsnakes to absolutely no avail.... this outcrop should be extremely snakey based on it's location and outside appearances - yet previously only a few neonate Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes and a lone Western Yellow Bellied Racer have been found in quite a few searches. Finding this California Kingsnake definitely explains the lack of tri-colored treats and the lack of snakes in general at this particular locale... I've noticed that in areas where mountain kings have knowingly been over collected throughout the years that these guys tend to move in and take over - perhaps a favorable habitat niche is opened up once a few mountain kings are removed .... you figure once the mountain king numbers drop substantially and breeding is no longer possible the number of available prey items increases quickly - an over abundance of lizards would certainly call in these top predators which unlike the mountain kings - tend to roam a bit farther away from their rocky lairs using open grasslands as their homes. I don't know the history of this particular outcropping but I'm sure it's seen it's fair share of people searching it and most likely collecting from it. Although there is no real evidence of this place being pilfered in recent times - every rock seemed to be in it's respective resting position...there could've been a point in the past where this was a very well known mountain king locale. In instances I've witnessed where they're over collected it can sometimes take years for new snakes to show up to the rocks and find permanent homes, that is of course if these wanderers don't find the rocks first and create a stronghold. It's just a theory thus far but I've definitely witnessed this phenomenon in at least four separate "well known" Mountain Kingsnake localities. I will be leaving this place alone in the years to come. 👎🏻 #Bummer#ButStillBeautiful#NotTheLampropeltisIAmLookingFor#Getula#CaliforniaKingsnake#BlackNWhite#LivingArt#WideAngle#Scenery#SantaCruzMountains#CitizenScience#Herpetology#Forest#UnexpectedOutcomes#WeakSauce
