“True happiness lies on bookshelves.” - @thewoodenword_ofbooks .
.
.
I almost got arrested by four policemen last night. After finishing work, I went to the post office to pick up a package from the amazing @thewoodenword_ofbooks and then I hurried to meet a friend. While I was waiting in front of a subway station, minding my own business, I decided I can have a little peek inside the package, because 1) I’m impatient, 2) I knew there are books inside, 3) hello, of course I’d have a peek right there on the street, who wouldn’t?!
.
.
.
When I took out the hardback first-edition copy of The Future Home of The Living God I gasped and almost fainted, thus attracting the attention of 4 policemen standing nearby. Then when I took out The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan, my gasp turned into a quiet little squeal. Which made the policemen look more carefully. Upon taking out the third book, Birdwatching in Hungary, the squealing was mixed with a little laugh and a huge smile. Seeing that the policemen were already a bit worried by my strangely elevated mood, I decided to dash and run down the subway escalator. .
.
.
Jennifer, you just biblio-rocked my biblio-soul! ❤️❤️❤️ .

Hello again. I took off for a minute.
It got complicated & I needed to peace out.
So, I did.
I kept it simple.
You, just asked to much of me social media. I needed to renegotiate our relationship. I stopped hanging out on all my breaks...in line at the bank, and especially- at home, in my bed. Your notifications were, out.of.control.
Ultimately, I think we shared too much.
Boundaries were too blurred.
So, I took the time I needed to figure it out.
You aren’t bad. It just wasn’t working for me.
I rekindled an old relationship - with books. I remembered how much I loved them - the ease and peace that filled me, curled up & lost in a good book. And, all that goes with it - the warm cup of tea, cozy dog at my feet...Not the anxiety that sometimes permeates through my body when we spend too much time together. Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling. It is too much🙈
I read S I X 📚 a month & a half during the time I typically hung with you. Six. Just on lunches & evenings...Okay, Maybe I stayed up a little late reading once or twice. They were good reads, though. Maybe I went a little crazy. But, it felt SO good.
And, sometimes, life IS about the proper binge.
I have decided I DO want you in my life again, social media...but we need boundaries. You will see me, but not as often & on my terms. I will decide what those are & let you know soon.
Right after I finish this next book😉✌🏼xox
Shout out to the @napabookmine for getting me on the #LouiseErdrich kick with your book of the month club🤩 Can’t wait for Thursday!

I might be a tad obsessed with my new bag! It's just so blue! And multiple books fit inside! 😍 👜📚 Also, this was a thrift store find! It was $10 🙌

Am I the only one who only buys bags/purses if they have enough space for multiple books? @romy_lv 😂

Also, I missed my bus stop today thanks to Tales of Burning Love! 🚍🤣 #talesofburninglove #louiseerdrich #thriftstorefinds #handbag #bluebag #currentlyreading #bookbag
Our current read aloud. .
.
.
Man. I could hardly read this today because I was crying so hard. .
.
.
Since becoming a Mother I have a really hard time reading or watching children experience pain and sorrow. .
.
.
Every child becomes my child and my heart aches for them. I see myself in every Mother and empathize with her in her struggles and triumphs. .
.
.
Needless to say, we are enjoying this story immensely. We are falling in love with this family. .
.
.
Odilon is happy to know there are several more books in this series and that we won't have to say goodbye to Omakayas when this book ends. .
.
.
An American classic not to be missed. .

Just finished... Such a gripping, thoughtful novel that is still wrapping my head up in different thought paths and feelings...

Chocolate bourbon pecan pastry from @moxiebreadco and a new novel by #louiseerdrich ? Life is too good! This novel feels like a cross between Erdrich’s earlier works & Margaret Atwood’s, particularly The Handmaid’s Tale. Hint: there’s a womb draft. •

"Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could." -Louise Erdrich

That quote may be a little bit too much for a Monday morning, but it's an excellent reminder that we are MEANT to play big... ✨That thing you've been dreaming of? That risk you've been wanting to take?✨ 👉Why not you? 👉Why not now?

I'm rooting for you! AND I'll be here doing things that make me nervous too, so if ya need a partner in crime... #imyourgirl

If I don’t finish this book by tomorrow, I will not be able to preach to my students about reading so let me go finish it. Plus, Madison, the only other student reading this book is way ahead of me. Whilst waiting for #futurehomeofthelivinggod to become available from the library, I’ve been reading #louiseerdrich’s earlier novel #theroundhouse. It’s set on a reservation so I’ve put it down as my “book set in a country that fascinates you”. There is so much nostalgia for IT/Stranger Things era childhoods...this is not one of those stories. #popsugarreadingchallenge2018
LaRose, by Louise Erdrich. I tried to read this two separate times when it came out a couple years ago and just couldn’t get into it. This time, I listened to it on audio from my library and really enjoyed it. I was first introduced to Louise Erdrich in college when I had to read Love Medicine for one of my freshman English classes. I love that she is from the area and writes about Minnesota and North Dakota. This book is about a two families who are connected by a little boy named LaRose. I’m so glad I gave it a third chance, Louise Erdrich has never let me down! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️#vickireads #bookreview #fourstars #larl #overdrive #audiobook #larose #louiseerdrich #bookstagram

Up early this morning & couldn’t stop reading - but oh, the ending. Loved the contrast of a disintegrating state, a tribal resurgence, blue-suited devils and brown-winged angels, all crystallised around the tense recognisable fears, hopes & dreams of a pregnant woman determined to survive.

¡Recomendable!

I am LOVING Tales of Burning Love by Louise Erdrich 😍

I was finishing part 1 on the bus to work this morning and I gasped when I finished it 😮 It's so well written, the characters are so complex and, even though it's emotionally heavy, there isn't a sense of working through the book. I can't wait to get back to it at lunch! 😄

What are you currently reading? What's the last book that made you physically react to what had just happened (laughter, tears, gasping, screams, etc)? #harpiesreadtheworld #talesofburninglove #louiseerdrich #nativeamericanauthor #currentlyreading

Fleur Pillager from the novel Tracks by Louise Erdrich.

I learned so much making this- most excitingly how to make a gradient in the procreate app! She ended up with a very Buffy/ graphic novel vibe, don’t you think? I love this character SO MUCH & highly recommend the book!

Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich tells the intertwining stories of members of a Chippewa tribe on a reservation in Argus, North Dakota. It’s an expansive narrative encompassing over 2 dozen characters and 60 years. It is a tender examination of personal longings, enduring wounds, and the way time cascades, interconnecting generations the way a creek feeds into a river and a river to the sea. The novel also depicts the systematically oppressive effects of US governmental policies on Native Americans. Love Medicine was Erdrich’s first novel and it received the National Book Critics Circle Award. ——————————————————— Louise Erdrich was born in Little Falls, Minnesota in 1954. She is an enrolled member of the Chippewa tribe. This is reflected in her 15 novels, 3 poetry collections, numerous children’s novels, and memoir which portray the intricacies of the Chippewa experience in the United States. In addition to the National Book Critics Circle Award, Erdrich has been awarded the Library of Congress Prize in American Fiction, the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. She is also the owner of an independent bookstore in Minneapolis, Birchbark Books. ———————————————————— "Society is like this card game here, cousin. Really good. As Erdrich said, no one writes books about the good kids, and this story made me want to raise children who support their siblings.

This abso-freaking-lutely beautiful calendar came in today from my wonderfully talented friend @literaryartjournal 😍
.
I’ve been checking the mail compulsively for this and wow, it’s even more lovely in person than I had imagined. Kanchana, I absolutely adore it. If you haven’t checked out her account, I would really suggest it. All of her work is hand painted and inspired by the literature she reads, and it’s INCREDIBLE! •
.
On a bookish note, I’m about halfway through Future Home of the Living God, and as always, Erdrich doesn’t disappoint. I’ll leave you with a quote that, as happens so often these days, seems scarily relevant. •

Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could. #louiseerdrich #ayutthaya #thailand #buddha #watmahathat #whyitravel #trustlife

#booklootjan2018 challenge day 9: Historical Fiction 🐹🗯 Under pressure, I’d probably have to say historical fiction is my favorite genre. 👾 recently pointed out to me that almost every book I’ve gifted her is about WW2, an area of particular interest to me. Photographed are mainly recent favorites, with a few all-time favorites thrown in. Any suggestions for future reads are greatly appreciated!

My winter break reads. The Power is as fun as everyone says it is (small disappointment that it isn’t total matriarchy fanfic, but power corrupts, absolutely and all that). I love Louise Erdrich, and will read anything she writes (LaRose was one of my favorite books last year) but man, a plot centered on women being unable to reproduce and locked up in order to produce more babies was just too close to Handmaids (or maybe it’s just bad timing because of the Handmaids revival due to the TV show?), but it left me feeling a little disappointed. And after a year of not reading a single book by a man, I finally broke the trend and read Nutshell by Ian McEwan. I remember really enjoying his book “Saturday” especially his descriptions of food/wine. Same with Nutshell- it’s a murder mystery/thriller told from the perspective of a fetus (with the personality of Stewie from Family Guy), and I LIKED IT. I might even read another book written by a man! Who knows?! The world’s a crazy place. But I’ll probably still keep it 100% petty and save my money to buy books written by women and check the male ones out from the library.

This last Sunday was the first night I really surrendered to my emotions over the loss of my dad. Sometimes I feel like I have a hard time dealing with my real feelings and then other times I watch a puppy cuddling a kitten and I'm all tears. Damn these complicated human souls, if only there was a manual to follow in this crazy life. But I guess there really wouldn't be any fun in that would there?

My full review of Future Home of the Living God is on the blog (link in bio)! A fun feature I intend to include is a TL;DR, spoiler-free version: well-written, but compelling sci-fi premise is completely squandered. Read Children of Men instead. 📚🤓#thriceweeklybookblog

I’ve finished Sourdough and it was just as wonderful as promised. Lois is a software programmer who, through a fondness for a certain delivery food, becomes a baker of sourdough. I know a lot of women who work in tech in some fashion and also make art, food, etc. and I think they will particularly appreciate this one. Sourdough is a refreshing and fun read. A great start to my 2018 reads. Have you read it? Did you love it? Are you also kind of craving bread now?

Avevo tre amici.

The fall of 2017 was one of the lowest and hardest times of the last 10 years of my life. It radically opened up and transformed parts of me that i had (intentionally) pushed away and forgotten existed. It created new places of spaciousness and tapped into a love, sorrow and longing that I didn’t know was there. At the time, it was excruciating, but once winter came, I could feel that it had grown my heart (and me) exponentially. Now it seems impossible to explain what happened, even in my own head. I feel like—I am—a different person than before and now it seems as if this is how I have always been. Transformation is like that. I am grateful for the metamorphosis and grateful for how it will continue to deepen in 2018. 🙏💘🌿✨

A lot of us have more privilege than we realize. Healthy food is very expensive, and not every community has easy access to fresh and healthy food. On a side note, talk of commodity food brings back dear memories of my grandparents' house with those white boxes with the black writing, like the food from the Darma Initiative on "Lost". #reading #roundhouse #louiseerdrich #books

I read this 317-page book in three days, and would have finished sooner if I didn’t have grownup responsibilities. So suspenseful. Thirteen-year-old Joe’s mother is brutally raped on the reservation in North Dakota where they live, but she can’t reveal her attacker’s identity. Joe sets out with his 3 friends to get answers.
