We are a family business, our Mum Lesley opened our first store in Bond Street, Brighton, nearly 20 years ago. She still works 4 days a week in the shop and has only taken a handful of Saturdays off for holidays/ family weddings and one of her six grandchildren’s births (the others thought better of being born on the busiest day of the week for our business). My Dad joined a few years later and myself, brother and sister all worked part time growing up and eventually came back to working full time as we settled down with families ourselves. My partner Juan Carlos and I opened a Jaba Yard just along the road in Hove and my sister Georgina, a fashion designer started our own label Jaba and Jaba Kids inspired by her eldest Daughter. We manage to all work closely as well as juggling our young children’s busy lives. It’s hard work especially around the Christmas period (our next official full day off will be Christmas Day) but we love it and still get excited every time we see someone in the street wearing one of our dresses or someone orders something online and that is why we do it. (Thanks to @lolahoad_ for the caption, 3 years later and still going strong). #familybusiness#shopindependent#shopsmall#shoplocal#shopindependentthischristmas#jabayard#lovejaba#lovebrighton#bondstreetbrighton
It's set to be a crisp autumnal day, so what better way to spend it than escaping to a local village? Lindfield is an easily accessible yet wonderfully picturesque spot in West Sussex, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Whilst you're there we cannot recommend @limeslindfield enough. Fantastic British cuisine, with a hint of Asian fusion here and there. If you're after something a little sweeter, then the afternoon tea at Limes is a must.
Dinner plans? @kooksrestaurant are a great shout for a Friday night. Based in Brighton's North Laine, these guys shut late on Friday and Saturday, with a dinner menu that runs exclusively on those two days. They are pros when it comes to cocktails too, meaning your dinner can transition seamlessly into a boozy Friday evening without needing to step outside into the cold to find a decent drinking establishment.
It's Friday afternoon, and if you're anything like us then you're already dreaming of where to grab cocktails this evening. Well, if you haven't tried the award-winning @merkababrighton then look no further. These guys are based on Jubilee Street in the centre of Brighton, and boast one of the most inventive cocktail menus we've ever seen. With a bunch of cocktails from a variety of regions and using a variety of spirits, including a section of the menu dedicated to cocktails inspired by Brighton, you'll soon be venturing out of your cocktail comfort zone and trying all new creations. Tip from us: try the fire cocktail - it really is a spectacle to behold. 🔥
We get excited about food a lot, but few things excite us more than the prospect of a cracking Sunday roast. Well, Sunday is rolling around again, and we've got our hearts set on a trip to Cuckfield for a meal at The Talbot. Easily reached from Brighton, either by car or taking a train to Haywards Heath followed by a short stroll, The Talbot is a favourite of local villagers so make sure you book in advance.
As part of the renovation, we decided to take down one of the plaster board walls to reveal an wonderful bit of the lanes history. You can see how the Hanningtons estate grew over time finally resulting in the space now created. Come check it out on the 18th 🎩
