What's my connection with RNLI?... This is me and the band supporting the RNLI long before the amazing opportunity to represent the RNLI and it's crew on ITV ever came about.
This picture was taken as part of the RNLI's 2016 Mayday campaign. If I remember rightly, it was taken at the Marina Theatre - Lowestoft shortly before the show.
For those of you who are unaware of the connection between myself and the RNLI, here it is... Just over seven years ago, I joined my local Lifeboat station in Ilfracombe. Having grown up around the sea, I felt like I really wanted to get involved and give something back to the community.
The RNLI started running its service in Ilfracombe in 1866. However the town has had an operational lifeboat since 1828, so there is a long history of the lifeboat service within the town.
As a child, watching the Lifeboats come in and out and hearing the maroons fire before a rescue, I always had a huge respect for the crews as they jumped aboard in their yellows and took to the water, whatever the weather.
It used to leave me wondering what it must be like to face the true unknown. Often in horrendous conditions. Sometimes in complete darkness. While the rest of the town sleeps. "What must go through their mind at the moment of launch?" "What if it was a rescue which would put them in a terrifying life or death situation?"
"How would they deal with facing a life threatening situation with no plan B?" Well little did I know that years later I would find out. First hand.
In 2010 I enrolled as crew and started my career as a volunteer crew member for the RNLI. The amount of training and new experiences that was to follow, was truly unbelievable.
Seven years on and I'm a helmsman on our inshore lifeboat, crew on our new Shannon class all weather lifeboat and incredibly proud to call myself one of the crew.
You never know the real bond between a lifeboat crew until you're part of it.
Imagine having a group of friends who you know would risk their life for you in an instant and who instinctively have your back in any given moment.
