I stumbled across a suggestion to watch Fritz the Cat in a psychedelic blog some years ago and fuck am I ever happy I did. This movie, if I’m correct, is the first X rated animated movie of all time. Truthfully, I don’t recall any X rated film ever but it’s probably a rating used before my time. Anyway, this movie is absolutely hilarious. It is a crude surreal comedy starring a college aged Cat (Fritz) who manipulates his way into acquiring sex and drugs and meanders his way through a psychedelic and politically charged environment. Whether he is igniting a shooting in Harlem or fleeing across the country with his girlfriend the rapturous insanity of this movie doesn’t fail to cease.
The film explores the 60’s, hippies, sex, pot, heroin addicted Nazi rabbits, racism and all sorts of equally weird and delightful stuff. The animation style is somewhat choppy when compared to Disney films of the time but that seems to add to the allure of the movie more than anything. In addition, considering when it was released it is fantastically vulgar and arguably the film gets away with a lot more than it would if it were released today.
There is an overall psychedelic hue to the film and a similar ambiance. Moreover, Fritz is strikingly different than any other animated movie during that era and its psychedelic feel coincides with that fact. Give it a watch, don’t take it too seriously.
