*** the Dream Machine *** William Burroughs (1914-1997) and Brion Gysin (1916-1986) as well as being fast friends and artistic collaborators, were both pioneers and enthusiastic adepts of this mysterious and eerie, hypnotic, rotating device.
Gysin had also previously developed the literary process known as the 'cut up technique' whereby unconnected screeds and texts would be jumbled up and then re-assembled in a non linear 'hit and miss' manner to create new and often psychedelic works. Several famous singer/lyricists, most famously David Bowie and Mick Jagger, would go on to experiment with this technique, with varying degrees of success.
Also pictured here is Gysin's revolving 'Dreammachine', which could induce hallucinations if the lights were at the optimum brightness of 10hz and the viewer was in the 'theta' state of semi-conciousness at thd time of peering through it. Keen advocates and enthusiastic proselytisers of this device were William Burroughs and Genedis P. Orridge of art/noise terrorists Psychic TV. ... ... ... ... #art#machine#picoftheday#pics#follow4follow#graphicdesign#williamburroughs#briongysin#amazing#dreamcatcher#dreamy#experiment
