When I’m out on the trails, I have a bad habit of focusing too much on completing the hike instead of savoring each moment. Like this one hike last summer in Iceland where I was met with very thick fog and less than ideal weather — so I found myself really pushing the pace and just wanting to get this hike over with.
But right around when I reached the halfway point, I realized how stupid that was. Here I was fortunate enough to be in one of the best outdoor playgrounds in the world, and all I was focusing on was miles remaining on my Garmin GPS watch! So I just stopped, dropped my pack few steps away from the trail, and sat down to simply take in everything around me: the sensation of cool wet glass, the sound of water tricking down a tiny creek, the calmness of the fog as it slowly veiled the scenery ahead.
This certainly wasn’t the most instagram-worthy moment of my Icelandic adventure, but it sure was memorable.
