Ok friends and fans..... Here's a pic of what I look like in reality these days. Hair a mess, looking tired bc of 3 days of sick kids while still recovering from weeks of sickness myself, in my jammies, and my head is cut off bc clearly Idk how to properly edit pics on my phone. 😂 I promise not to flood you with weekly belly pics, but this is where I am today- 16 weeks and 2 days. 💜 #mdflowerfarm#MDfarmher#mamafarmer#summerbaby
I hope y'all had a beautiful Sunday! Sunday is my favorite day because it's typically a day of rest (and football). But I used this Sunday to plant more specialty narcissus and tulips. One of my Sweet Aunt's stayed the night, so, she watched my Little guy while I ran around as fast as I could digging little trenches, planting bulbs and amending the soil. For any of you that garden or own your home, daffodils are a wonderful choice! They multiply and pretty much every garden pest stays away from them, including deer! They are also probably the easiest flower to plant and they will continue giving you beautiful flowers year after year. 🌱🎉💐🌷
We had a lamb unexpectedly pass away in the night. Found her laying peacefully in the barnyard. She was being stand offish this week - her temp was fine. So, I’m not sure if it was getting to frisky with skye the calf or another meningeal worm attack. Nevertheless, she died peacefully. The girls came out to see her. Delia helped shear her. This life is hard. A friend reminded me the life lessons these sweet girls are learning. This farming year has been hard AF with wet fields and animal deaths beyond our control. But that’s farming. That’s life. My sweet girls teach me so much about understanding life and death. I am thankful for all this life no matter how hard it is. We will wash and card this fleece and I will teach my girls how to spin with this gorgeous fiber.
This little turkey was six months old yesterday, no matter what the blocks say. He is the sweetest, most laidback kid. Unless you don't immediately feed him when he's hungry or help him get to sleep when he's tired. Then he screams his head off. He loves kisses and thinks his big sister is the funniest thing in the world. He's wearing mostly 12 month size clothes. So thankful for him sms the rest of our family.
this magical being turned four yesterday. I can't believe it's already been four years since she made me a mother and changed my life forever. She is so clever and intense and curious and persistent and energetic and I am so grateful to be watching the person she is unfolding. #twinkletoesherself#farmkid#growgoodkids#mamafarmer
I took this photo this past Sunday right before the clouds rolled in and we got some rain. I took it laying beneath my current favorite tree, I don't know the name, but I'm sure one of you can help me out...? During each season another tree is the shinning star, right now this tree is every color under the sun and is the perfect vision of Fall. I'm posting right now because I'll probably be doing a ton of laundry and cooking tomorrow to get ready to head to my Grandparents. Thanksgiving is my favorite Holiday, there isn't as much stress and it's all about two things that I feel extremely passionate about: Family and being Thankful. My family and I are very close, I still see my Grandparents every three or so weeks with a two year old, another on the way, a Farm, a Husband and enough laundry to drown in. 😂. Someone once asked me what my family's one core value was and I responded quickly, "hard work," my Grandpa began working at 5 years old in Mexico shining shoes to help sustain his family, my Grandma grew up with dirt floors and began making tortillas at 5, they didn't have lots of food, so, they only put chile in them, my Mom worked 2-3 jobs as a single Mother to raise my Sister and I and I started working at 13, not for food but to be a cheerleader (I should have played guitar 😂) and my Husband worked for ten years as a Ranch Hand while trying to get hired for the Fire Service (he worked on the property we now own, it used to be one big ranch and they parceled it out). He and I also put ourselves through College. Thanksgiving is so special to me because it's a reminder of who I am and what type of people I come from. It's also a reminder to be thankful. We all have hardships. My Husband and I always say that we all have our sob stories, it's rare to meet a person who hasn't had to overcome really hard things, but your outlook, work ethic and ability to grab yourself by the britches can help you overcome so much. Whenever I'm in a really bad mood I make myself list ten things I'm thankful for. It's a wonderful exercise and truly helps me feel better. I wish you all the best Thanksgiving & Holidays. I'm off to snuggle my Little Man. 💤👶
This little dude is 2 months old! And I haven’t posted many pics of him so here you go if you want to get caught up :). He is a very smiley boy who loves watching his sister, getting kisses, dancing with dad, and batting at his animal mobile...the black bear is his favorite to stare at. I also made sure to include some crying photos because you know life with two kids (and 4 goats, 2 rabbits, 3 ducks and too many chickens to keep track of) ain’t all giggles and smiles :).
Today I wanted to share a little about my Husband because I'm so thankful for him. We've been chatting about me buying some peony roots for the last couple of weeks and he immediately asked how big the holes have to be (he dug 34 rose holes for me last year), I said "uhhh, not as big as roses, but let me find out. Anyways, today he asked what we needed to do, I said that we should plant some peonies, he asked how many I bought. I responded "28," his face immediately turned to, "shit Marge!" 😂 But right away he changed his attitude and helped me decide where to plant them and then spent his day digging holes for me. I guess with so much bad going on in the world in terms of men I wanted to share a story about a good one. When I took this photo he was making a joke that roses are his first favorite, then peonies and then tulips (all require him digging huge holes or trenches). 😂😂😂 I was reading, "Lean In," a few years ago and she advises women to date as many A-Holes as your heart desires, but to marry a kind man who values your time as much as his. I can't agree more! Especially if you want to have children. There are all sorts of things a man just can't do because his body can't make a baby, bring a baby to this Earth, feed a baby, so many things. So, in my humble opinion he should be able to make you some food and be really nice to ya. Happy Saturday Folks! PS. We chose to have the peonies line our property line so that when you drive up that's what you see. I think it's perfect, he dug the holes and I planted the flowers, everything requires balance and teamwork. 💪💚💐
When we purchased our property this succulent was one lonely tiny little flower in a bed that was dirt (not soil) in front of our house. I thought it was pretty, so, every once in a while I'd toss some water on it, now it's much, much larger with lots of friends. This variety is insanely easy to grow, but it made me think that most living things require the same things: love and attention. With only one year of true flower farming under my belt I still have a ton to learn, but I feel much more confident about my ability to pay close attention to living things. I told one of my Sweet Flower Friends that I felt like Farming was similar to being a Mama and she said something to the effect of, "I think we both love growing human and plant babies," she is also a wonderful Farmer and Mama/Grandma. As I reflect on many failures and accomplishments, I am so thankful that I grew flowers, they taught me more about life than I ever could have dreamt. Good night Flower Lovers, I wish you sweet dreams (last night I dreamt of peonies because I was reading about them before bed). I hope you are all doing something you love! 💚🌱💚
This morning while my Little Man was still sleeping I quickly planted another section of ranunculus. I pre-sprouted them using Bare Mountain Farm's methods and as you can tell in the back of the photo, they are already popping up all over the place. Bare Mountain Farm has great videos on YouTube that are super helpful. My Little guy and I came to visit my Grandparents, Mom, Sister and little Cousin for the rest of the day while Dada is working a mandatory. I hope you are all getting a little family and rest time on this beautiful Saturday! 💚
My favorite thing about local flowers/bouquets is that you find items included in each bouquet that tie you to a place. I think (anyone know for sure?) this is a wild privet tree that is growing ten feet from my back door. When we first moved in I called it the weed tree, I pretty much hit the nail on the head because privet is considered invasive, but over the years I have grown to adore this little tree, in Spring it has little white blooms and in Fall it has these almost black berries. I love it and it reminds me of home. 🏡💚
Happy Día de Los Muertos everybody! Growing up my Mom took me to really cool things that at the time I thought they were kinda boring, but now I realize how cool they were and I hope to show my Son how beautiful it is to retain your culture. My Mom took me to Farm Worker Meetings to get Mexican workers rights, art museums, pastorellas, plays and all sorts of things. Growing up I remember realizing that not everyone spoke Spanish. In my little kid brain, I just assumed everyone spoke two languages. I'm teaching Waylon Spanish as well. I have my family only speak to him in Spanish and I do my best to speak to him in Spanish as much as I possibly can. Although he often speaks English back to me, he understands both fluently. You can ask him how old he is and he will say "two," but he knows that that is also "dos"and he loves my Grandma's homemade tortillas and already uses them like a fork like the mini Mexican he is. I love culture and individuals who are themselves and I hope to goodness that I'm raising a little man who knows exactly who he is and where he came from. 💚👶. #florecitafloral#florecita#marigolds#diadelosmuertos#flowerfarmer#mamafarmer#bewhoyoube#mexihillhippiemama
Black and Blue Salvia that is as multi-faceted as the sunset on this beautiful evening. We spent today deciding which chores would get done while my Husband is home and then spent the rest of the day barely making a dent in the chores we were supposed to get done today. 😂 It seems like it's always that way around here. Between cooking, nap time, play time and just trying to juggle child rearing and farming the days fly by. It's a beautiful life though, I finally feel like my Son isn't clinging to me 24 hours a day. That sounds horrible, but I've raised him extremely gently which means he's been a Huge Mama's boy, it's been beautiful, he still naps best with me by his side and likes to finish his breakfast in my lap. As I watch him grow I finally feel like all of my sleepless nights are paying off. He's a kind, gentle, brilliant little guy. Maybe one day I'll write about what I think our world should look more like and less like. But for now I'm just going to watch my Grandpa's Favorite Baseball Team hopefully win, make dinner for my family and soil blocks some seed babies. Happy Sunday y'all! #florecitafloral#florecita#flowerfarmer#placergrown#happysunday#gododgers#familyandflowers#enjoythesimplethings#mamafarmer#mamamaker
This is my way of saying goodbye to October. 👋 Due to the unkind fires, my Husband has worked a shi* ton, to say we've missed him would be an understatement. 99 percent of the flowers I post are my flowers; that means I start seeds at 10pm, weed until my fingers bleed, sweat like crazy and still try to be the best Mama and Wife I can be, which means I do all of the things a household requires on top of doing all of the child rearing & Farm stuff while my Husband is away. We are a teeny operation, it's me, we don't have help, my Husband works for days at a time away from the home, it's exhausting. There is never a shortage of things to do, I often go to my Grandma's when he's away just so that I don't see the weeds or the chores that need to be done. My Mom used to tell me "life isn't a country song," but I still think she's wrong. Merle Haggard wrote my song, it's called the "Working Woman's Blues." 😘 #florecitafloral#florecita#flowerfarmer#mamafarmer#farmher#ripmerle#readyfornovember
Sometimes love comes in the form of a flower - Author - Me. 😍. Roses and Japanese Anemones grown by the wonderful @cyndees.garden My Husband is in the process of making our property San Chicken in an effort to keep the deer out. We only put up a deer fence around one acre of our property to allow the deer to eat off the rest of it, I'm trying to live harmoniously with them and allow them to eat here, I just get really sad when they eat my roses. Oh, random other thought. I must grow Japanese Anemones. If anyone knows of a wholesaler around me, please let me know. They are on my top ten favorite flowers list. They are so airy and magical. Them paired with roses is my definition of sexy. #florecitafloral#flowerfarmer#howilovethee#farmher#placergrown#mamafarmer#cyndeesgarden
Our Farmstand is open today from 1pm - Sunset or until we sell out. We are planning to grow more flowers this coming year, it's amazing how much you learn in one year. We are also going to have an incredible spring full of ranunculus, tulips, anemones and so much more! I've been a busy bee, oh, on another note, my Little Man grabbed a small frog and put it outside for his Mama last night. He's such a country kid. Somehow we get about one little frog in the house an evening, I put my gloves on because they pee, I was a city girl before moving here. I am so thankful that he's pitching in and helping his Mama. It was pretty adorable, he was so proud, I was too! 😍 #florecitafloral#farmstandopen#mondayflowers#flowerfarmer#flowersofinstagram#farmher#mamafarmer
Our Farm Stand is open today from 1:30pm - Sunset. It is located at the cross streets of Christian Valley & Winchester Way in Auburn, sorry we haven't been open much lately we have been busy prepping for Spring. 🌷🌷🌷We will be closed tomorrow and re-open Friday. Our hours will be seldom during the month of October, my Husband has to help me put it out and this month he is working a ton of overtime. Come and grab some beauties while they are still available. Sending love and beauty out to all of those affected by the fires. ❤️🌿✨ #florecitafloral#florecita#farmstandopen#auburnca#placergrown#farmher#mamafarmer#lisianthus#dahlias#flowersofinstagram
This past weekend was a full one, Saturday we had a party to celebrate my little man turning two, I got misty as he blew out his candles and Sunday I was able to attend a beautiful workshop hosted by @littleboyflowers, Angie was so generous with her wealth of knowledge & expertise in farming and floral design. I learned a ton, got to play with flowers and chat with incredible women. I'm always proud to be a strong woman, but being around other intelligent and strong women is always so inspiring & fulfilling. Farming is no easy task, it's physically exhausting and takes constant supervision; it was incredibly lovely to be able to chat flowers and listen to other talented women who are also Mamas. I made this arrangement using blooms and foliage that Angie and her crew (two awesome women) grew. I left with a thankful and full heart that is ready to take on another year! 💪❤️🌷👶🏻 #florecitafloral#florecita#womenwhofarm#farmher#mamafarmer#thankfulheart#inspired#flowerfarmer#mustordermoreseeds
You came into this world right around this time and it was the greatest love I'll ever know. The sun shines brighter, my smile is gianter and well, you are the reason I grow flowers. Happy Birthday mí rey. Your Mama loves you more than all the flowers in the world. #florecitafloral#mamafarmer#mygreatestlove#mysunshine#myson
My Son's 2 year birthday is on Monday, his Dad works, so we are having a little family bday party for him tomorrow. I had a bunch of flowers in the outside fridge and quickly placed them in some bud vases, because he's my Son and he of course loves flowers. Yesterday we took him to Party City, bought too many hats and other things he probably doesn't need, but decided that he's only little once. Being a Mama is the greatest gift I've been given. Everything is more fun with him. I've always loved County Fairs, I wanted a Ferris Wheel tattoo and one day maybe I'll get it, anyways, we took Waylon recently to a few and agreed that they are even more fun! Anyways, celebrate something this weekend! Party like a 2 year old! #florecitafloral#florecita#flowerfarmer#flowersandfamily#mamafarmer#farmher#partyhard
Cosmos are my favorite cut-and-come-again summer annual. It's hard to make statements like that because there are so many favorites, but that is one I'm comfortable with. My sweet friend @farmhouseflowers recommended I grow lots, I listened, but now I realize that you have to succession plant very regularly because the plants slow down and almost stop putting off flowers. Next year I plan on growing more white varieties, I feel like I've been waiting on a blush white variety to bloom forever, but I know it's just my lack of patience. When she blooms I'll be sure to post photos. ✨ #florecitafloral#florecita#cosmos#farmher#mamafarmer
Post storm sweet potato dig, I heard the sun is coming out tomorrow. What is this so called sun they speak of? *Please ignore the weeds, it's a proven fact after Labor Day I neglect all weeding duties. My garden turns into an every man for themselves type thing. Or in this case every vegetable.*
This Little Man had a mild fever the past couple of days, it's crazy how as a Parent time stands still while your Little is sicky. We took the last couple of days to focus on our little man and taking naps to make up for not sleeping at night. He's back and so are we! Swipe right to see a flower within a flower growing near my Grandma's house. It reminded me of a Mama and her Little. #florecita#flowersandfamily#mamafarmer
Farmwork is so satisfying! We went out this morning with the intention of harvesting a few ripe tomatoes, but ended up clearing out the entire bed of purple potatoes and onions. I love that I can look back and see an empty bed and full buckets. It ended up being 98lbs of potatoes and 29lbs of onions, if we counted the green tops, which we do because we chop and dehydrate the tops. My house reeks of onions right now. Anyway...I was super impressed with @srtaylor2004 and how much she worked all day today. She's a pretty awesome litle sidekick.
My friend Josh said that I need to post photos of my smiling face, so here we are - my smiling face and my flowers. This was last night at 11pm while I was making bouquets for our Farmstand that I couldn't open today because my Son is often a Zombie and wakes me sometimes as often as a newborn. It turns out Farming with an infant is a heck of a lot harder than I imagined, yet I wouldn't change either for the world. #florecitafloral#florecita#mamafarmer#bootykicked#prayingforsleep#reallife#everythingworthwhileisswork
