Quick Thoughts (D.E.A.R.): Charlie Huston's mini run of Moon Knight (13 issues of the 2006 series, as sole writer). Cover by: Mico Suayan. 🌘spoilers ahead 🌒. Max Bemis' run hasn't started, so I'm heading backwards. Nothing could prepare me for the gloom fest that is the first half of this short run. And it's also one of the bloodiest things I've ever read. I'm surprised there was no disclaimer on the covers. or that the series wasn't a part of Marvel Knights or MAX (maybe both didn't exist in 2006). There's a strong sense of continuity in Huston's run and, even though i'm not an expert on the character, I wouldn't recommend this as a starting point. The villain The Profile provides some recapping and Marc Spector's backstory. It's a good character, he's cool. working behind the scenes and analysis is his specialty. The start off point of having Marc temporarily inactive as Moon Knight, down and out emotionally could work well if there's ever a Netflix show (specifically: as a premiere of a 2nd or 3rd season, continuing from a cliffhanger ending). The recapping is mostly in the first 3 or 4 issues, some through Marc talking with Khonshu, some through The Profile. Khonshu and Marc's conversations are hysterical, I was reminded a bit of An American Werewolf in London. .
The first half is good, a bit more action could've been thrown in. The second half: the story declines. ehh.. tie-ins strike again. Being linked to Civil War wasn't necessary, I dislike the emphasis on "You must choose a side, Marc!!". I feel that all the series needed was a mention or two of the event via dialogue and some details or references in the background (a magazine or newspaper that says "Spider-Man unmasks!!"). Tony Stark appearing in the latter half affected the pace of the issues where the villain Midnight shows up. I mention this because the series put a brief, good focus on the idea that Marc is an outsider of the super hero community. If you want to know about Moon Knight's past adventures, Marc recovering: read the first half. And.. well, the series that have been published before this one, though I'm no expert on that. I haven't read much of the very first series
It's definitely farfetched, but this is my dream casting. I think Gyllenhaal would play a very good Marc Spector. If any of you have seen Prisoners, i think you can agree that he could play a good jake lockley. Also, if you have seen Enemy or Donnie Darko, Gyllenhaal shows that he would do very well with the multiple personality aspect of MK. And I can see the interaction between him and the rabbit (frank) in Donnie Darko being similar to Marcs interactions with Khonshu.🌙 Let me know what you guys think. Would Gyllenhaal do a good job? Who would you guys pick?
This is what it's like to have Moon Knight as your favorite super hero. He gets mentioned in the big marvel event, but he's dead. I really do appreciate that they mentioned him when it could have been any other of the hundreds of Marvel characters. I just wish we could have seen an actual MK with symbiote that isn't just one piece of video game concept art.
As a kid it used to feel like I'd see this cover all of the time in house ads and those polly bagged three packs of comics they used to sell in department stores.
In reality I probably only saw it a hand full of times but it left a huge impression on me.
It somehow felt more "real", and definitely more mysterious, than your basic Marvel or DC comic of the early eighties.
Not my favorite issue of the classic run by writer Doug Moench and artist Bill Sienkiewicz but for sure a pivotal image in my formative years.
