Still in a @chandlerlimited kinda mood tonight... it’s hard to talk about the Zener without talking about the RS-124s. The original RS-124 compressors at Abbey Road were Altec 436 compressors modified and upgraded by EMI to meet their needs / the needs of Abbey Road, and were painted grey to signify the modulations. Known for ultra transparent compression and tons of depth and warmth, these variable mu compressors also famously had a “release hold feature”. The engineers could manually switch the release to “hold mode” which caused the gain reduction to stay exactly where it was until hold was disengaged. This was used in an automation kind of way, where if a song starting out or a loud portion of a song would cause an incredible amount of gain reduction and therefore pumping and artifacts.. the hold mode would keep the compressor from reacting and causing those issues. They would then disengage this feature after the problem area would pass. The Chandler Limited reinterpretation is not only my favorite Chandler unit, but likely my favorite compressor currently manufactured. Using original EMI/Abbey Road notes, they perfectly emulated the uncanny transparency (even at extreme reduction amounts), and beautiful tonality. In addition to release hold mode, you also get the original attack times of 3 vintage RS-124s, and turning the “fuse switch” pushes the mids up in the mix... perfect for electric guitar and many other applications. These are hard to beat on lead vocals, guitars, drum overheads and rooms, acoustic instruments, and anything else you want rich but transparent and detailed. Definitely a staple of Slack Key Studio. - Michael Frasinelli ----------------------------------------------------- #recordingstudio#musicstudio#studiolife#producerlife#nashvillemusic#audioengineer#audioengineering#proaudio#vintage#analog#tubes#gearhead#studiosession#recordingsession#compressor#abbeyroad#recording#mixing#mastering#production#musicproducer#classicrock#indierock#indiemusic#popmusic#acoustic#acousticguitar#bassguitar#guitarplayer#drummer
Here's a little clip of the drum tones we dialed in for the @satyr_band EP this weekend! @v3g3t4b1e is a freaking monster drummer, he tracked 3 of the 6 songs in one take and I think we punched in maybe 4 or 5 times total... insane.
Anyways, I'm super stoked on the sounds we got, and I can't wait to start tracking guitars 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Crushing some drums! 💪🏻This is my parallel compression for the kit. Got kick and snare bussed together with a touch of the rest of kit in there too. Love how it's bringing out the dirty ring on the snare, which is actually what I want to hear more of on this particular track 👊🏻 drawmer 1978 is in mix buss duty!
