Maisto 1968 Chevy Camaro Z28, Pro Rodz assortment, released circa 2006.
Maisto, oh Maisto. You’re an enigma. Your start with bargain-priced 1:18th-scale models in the early 1990s promised a bright future. Then you tried 1:64 and other scales. All good. You even went head-to-head with Jada when you produced over-the-top muscle cars like the one shown here.
One of the great things about your Pro Rodz and AllStars vehicles is the size, compared to Jada. Most of them fit into the standard carrying case such as a Jammers box. I also like that you produced chase cars that collectors could actually find. This car, for example, is one of 2,500. And it even has red tires (which I’m not fond of on a Johnny Lightning car). But on this example, the execution is excellent.
The tires are low-profile, and a dark red so they don’t call attention to themselves. The black-on-black flames suit many cars, and they look subtle and well-integrated on this model. Make more like this and I think you’ll give the other brands a run for their money.
Of course, you made this car over a decade ago. You’ve got the stuff to join legendary brands like Johnny Lightning and Hot Wheels, and I’d love to see that happen.
