Space Exploration Week #4
The Martian is a 2015 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel of the same name. Matt Damon stars as an astronaut who is mistakenly presumed dead and left behind on Mars. The film depicts his struggle to survive and others' efforts to rescue him.
Matt Damon is in his best form for this film, he really delivers one of the most convincing performances of his career. Although the movie has a couple of tone shifts, Damon’s performance makes all of it seems natural, whether it be his comedic side or the more dramatic and serious one. It’s also one of Ridley Scott’s most impressive looking films, everything about the Mars landscape actually looks beautiful and realistic. I really enjoy the survival aspect of this movie, mainly because Damon’s character is just so clever, resourceful, and optimistic that I really root for him. It’s also worth mentioning that this is a rather scientifically accurate sci-fi movie, that’s not an easy feat to do in a movie like this.
The timing of switching between the events on earth and Mars don’t always go smoothly, and sometimes it last too long or too short in one end. The climax on the final act isn’t as good as I had hoped, it just seems too unrealistic to actually happen, considering the fact that this movie has been consistently try to be as realistic as possible up until that point.
The Martian is an outstanding work from director Ridley Scott, featuring a fantastic performance by Matt Damon. It’s an entertaining and scientifically accurate survival story for any sci-fi fan.
