Saturday, the 28th of June, 2008, was the day before Pride.
The Bush regime waned--many of us wore digital countdown clocks with camouflage wristbands. It looked almost certain--although none of us held our breath--that in four months Barack Obama would be elected President. It was a fitting date for Restaurant Florent's last supper.
Florent (the man) felt about nostalgia just the way Margo Channing did about cheap sentiment. (He detested it.) When crest-fallen customers approached him to "reconsider" closing the restaurant, he would shoo them away. He told them that their nostalgia marked an immaturity, an inability to come to grips with their impending deaths.
Therefore, we decided a proper finish to his 23-year, 24-hour bistro should take its cue from Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Whose going to happy hour at #Fatbird tonight?? @marlodenege enjoyed her taste testing yesterday with truffle herb parmesan fries, deviled eggs and fresh baked biscuits! Our mouths are watering just thinking about it. 😋
