Gluten free workshop with dietitian & nutritionist, Carla. Carla is discussing gut health and the systemic impact it can have on the entire body as well as symptoms of IBS, IBD, Coeliac and gluten intolerances.
Try this at home: write down your average food day. How many of those foods are gluten containing? Most people find that they eat gluten at each meal which can make it hard to change to a gluten free. .

🌟 COOKING TIP; VEGETARIANS 🌟
~ Avoiding an iron deficiency.
Both dark leafy vegetables and meat are good sources of iron. However the iron on meat is far more easily absorbed leaving vegetarians and vegans susceptible to iron deficiency disorders such as anaemia. There are plenty of ways to avoid this - here is one simple trick to help.
‼️TIP:‼️ "Blanche" your dark veggies by dipping them in boiling water for 10-15secs before either steaming or microwaving them to cook fully.
Blanching increases iron absorption of your veggies whilst steaming and microwaving retains nutrient quantity more effectively than boiling.

☀️ HOT & HUMID ENDURANCE ☀️
Endurance exercise in a hot & humid environment can cause you to lose 1-3litres of fluid every hour! With this you can expect to lose >150mg sodium (main electrolyte regulating cell hydration)
These loses can rapidly lead to dehydration and by the time a thirst sensation occurs it is TOO LATE. Dehydration can lead to:
⬇️ Blood Volume
⬇️ Sweat Rate
⬆️ Risk of Heatstroke
⬆️ Risk of Dropout
⬆️ Risk of Heat Cramps
It should be your goal to replace 100% of fluid and electrolytes lost every hour during exercise, however in this situation it is near impossible to do. So to help avoid dehydration you MUST:
1️⃣ Drink plenty during 24hours (and ~500ml 1-2hours) before exercise; use urine colour to measure hydration status
2️⃣ Sip on sports drinks building up the exercise to maintain electrolyte balance
3️⃣ Whenever possible during exercise drink sports drinks with 150-200mg sodium content
4️⃣ Practice and train your hydration strategies to match the amount you can drink to the amount of sweat lost - without inducing GI distress

HEY MUMMA BEAR, YOU ARE STRONGER THAN YOU REALISE Whether you are a soon to be Mumma Bear, a new Mumma Bear, a Mumma Bear of one or many or a Mumma Bear still on your fertility journey.... I'm talking to all of you. I've been a bit absent on IG lately, it's been a big few months for our little cub and I'll probably share it all one day when we are a bit more settled. One thing I've realised through it all though is that Mumma Bears have a true inner strength that has surprised me so so much. I don't think I truly even realised it until I had my baby bear but I'm owning it right now (ok maybe I realised it during cub's incredible birth but it got lost along the way). If you are having a tough hour, day, week or even month, reach down deep inside and own that amazing feminine power. You are a strong woman, a goddess, a true Wonder Woman whether you realise it or not. Sending love and strength to all the Mumma Bears out there xx 📷 via @stylish_bump

🔥 TOP TIPS; CARB LOADING 🔥
~ What foods should you be eating when fuelling up for endurance related performance?
>8g per kg (for a 70kg person this >560g) can fully load your muscles! This is A LOT of starchy carbs like pasta, rice, bread, etc. So I believe the key to effective loading is making sure you also include rapidly absorbed lower fibre, high sugar toppings, snacks, and drinks:
🍊 Fruit Juices/Smoothies
🥄 Low Fat Greek Yogurt
🍌 Fresh Fruit (Bananas & Grapes)
🍰 Cakes & Flapjacks
Try combining some of these together to make tasty snacks & enjoy it whilst you can!
💪🏼 HARD BOILED CHEAP PROTEIN SNACK 💪🏼
One of the biggest barriers to a healthy lifestyle change is quick, cheap, and easily available snack options. Not everything has to be complicated and time consuming to prep.
At the start of the week hard boil a number of eggs (10-12MINS in boiling water), de-shell them, cover and store in the fridge.
After work when dinner isn't cooked and you need a snack to keep you going your low calorie high protein boiled eggs are readily available. Just 2 should be enough to provide one of your 3-5 daily protein intakes necessary to STIMULATE MUSCLE GROWTH & ADAPTATION!
It's finally starting to warm up here in Melbourne and we're getting excited for all the amazing summer fruit Australia produces. One of our favourites is pineapple.
Bromelain a powerful enzyme found in pineapples (highest concentration located in the tough core). Bromelain breaks down protein, which can aid digestion. There's also some evidence to suggest it could also be good for sinus congestion, rebalancing stomach acid, help resolve indigestion or heartburn, and speed up healing time by reducing swelling. 🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍 #mnmclinic#melbournehealth#naturalmedicine#pineapple#summer 📷 thanks to @laurencurtain
❓COCONUT OIL; TRUTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS❓
Coconut Oil is a top source of medium-chain fats (MCTs) which have been found to:
🌟 Provide energy
🌟 Help reduce levels of other stored fat
🌟 Improve metabolism
🌟 Fight infection
🌟 Balance hormones
🌟 Amongst plenty of other proposed benefits
HOWEVER it is made up of ~90% SATURATED fats which are generally considered the "bad" fats due to their effects on raising "bad" cholesterol & coconut Oil is no exception to this.
The benefits of MCTs can be achieved from as little as ~1-2TBSP COCONUT OIL so it makes sense to stick to SMALL AMOUNTS of coconut oil per day so as not to exceed a balanced saturated fat intake.

Melissa officinalis or lemon balm is a popular herb for nervous system and digestive support.
The leaves are used to provide sedative, carminative, antispasmodic, antiviral, antimicrobial and diaphoretic properties. Naturopaths use lemon balm to assist with anxiety, depression, insomnia, IBS, flatulent colic and dyspepsia.
Melissa is a herbal remedy that can be used at home. You can make a cup of tea with a couple of leaves and infuse for a minimum of five minutes before consuming to support digestion and calm your nervous system. While waiting for the leaves to infuse, you can breath in the steam from the tea for additional nervous system support!
💊 SUPPLEMENTS; DO'S & DONT'S 💊
Supplements should only be used:
1️⃣ Alongside an already optimum diet
2️⃣ If they are tested and safe
3️⃣ If they provide a PROVEN and WORTHWHILE benefit
4️⃣ If the quantity required cannot be reasonably obtained from food sources alone
Relatively few pass both 3️⃣ and 4️⃣. Those that do include:
🌟 Carbohydrate Gels/Drinks
🌟 Protein Powder
🌟 Creatine Monohydrate
🌟 Beta-Alanine/Sodium Bicarbonate
🌟 Beetroot Juice (Nitrates)
🌟 Tart Cherry Juice
🌟 Vitamin D
Each of these has a different effect on the body. Whilst a supplement may be useful for one individual athlete at a certain time in their specific sport, it is unlikely that this will be the case for a different athlete.
It takes a qualified professional who understands the mechanisms by which these supplements effect the body to accurately weight up the benefits against the risks before deciding upon its use.
⚠️ CAUTION ⚠️ Sports supplements are not subject to rigorous food standards testing and many contain banned substances (i.e. steroids) which can end an athletes career and seriously harm a persons health. Always look for the 'Informed Sport' logo before deciding to use a supplement.

Well Spring has certainly sprung in Melbourne and hay fever season is now in full effect.
Some tips to prevent the dreaded hay fever include: 🌱Making sure you get enough sleep and rest - approximately 8 hours a night is ideal to ensure your immune system is able to work effectively
🌱Consuming a kiwi fruit daily - kiwi fruit contains high levels of Vitamin C (the yellow varieties are even higher!) which is a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory which supports healthy immune function. Kiwis also contain bioflavonoids and antioxidants that complement the Vitamin C effect in the body. 🌱Pineapple contains bromelian which is an enzyme that has strong anti-inflammatory effects which assists to decrease mucosal inflammation and congestion.
🌱Eating onion daily can assist to keep hay fever at bay as onions are jam packed with quercetin, a flavonoid which is a natural anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. You can eat the onions raw in salads, or in cooked dishes. Quercetin can also be found in kale, apples, red grapes, berries, cherries and parsley. 🌱Certain strains of probiotics can assist with restoring immune response and supporting the bacteria in the gut can improve immunity, leaving you less susceptible to developing allergies and illnesses. Fermented foods can also provide some support.
There are many herbs and nutrients that can support immune function and reduce hay fever symptoms, please get in contact if you would like to know more!

MY STORY on BODY IMAGE
I’m so excited to be able to share this with you.
Earlier this year I was interviewed by @thezenithnetwork about the journey I’ve been through to become comfortable in my skin.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know this is an ongoing journey for me, and that for everyone struggling with body image and a complicated relationship to food, it’s much deeper than it appears.
My hope is that this can help raise awareness and let you know you’re not alone.
If this speak to you, reach out to someone in your life. They don’t have to be the ‘right’ person in the beginning, it takes time, but you need to reach out 💛
