Christina here. You may have seen ol’ mate Zuckerberg’s (who?) announcement that Facebook will be showing you more from your family and friends and less businessey stuff.
You may have been excited as a human person then proceeded to FREAK OUT as a business owner.
Now more than ever, it’s time to be HUMAN. You must be a storyteller. And you know what? As photographers, half the battle is done for you with your stunning visual content!
Our course will help you with tools to tell stories with your words, you socials, your branding, your writing (so sign up to the newsletter for release date) but in the meantime? Stay HUMAN. Speak how you speak. Write what YOU want to read. Storytell, don’t sell.
And for goodness sake, don’t panic!
To be a bohemian isn't to just wear flowing dresses or follow a trend. Bohemian means to be unconventional, to question, and constantly challenge yourself. My bohemian vision for life is developed from of a strong sense of connection to where I was born and live. Melbourne is a creative city, but building a creative career didn't happen overnight and it is still something I work on every single day. My commitment to using only locally grown and manufactured materials is because sustainability really means something to me. I know that my work contributes to the global accumulation of 'stuff' and it would be disingenuous to not admit that. If you're a bohemian, in the true sense of the word, I invite you to start gently questioning yourself. Where were my clothes made? What does 'ethically produced' actually mean? How did my meal end up on my table? Where does my garbage go after it's picked up?
They're terrifyingly simple questions with deeply complex answers. Don't assume you have to answer them straight away.
At the end of 2017 I made the choice to become a vegetarian.
My journey to vegetarianism started three years ago when I first started questioning the life of the animal I was eating. It's taken me three years to come to the conclusion that eating meat isn't for me anymore. (It's really funny because people have always assumed I'm a vegetarian 😂, perhaps I always was and didn't realise it). It's not a simple choice and I don't put it down to a simple answer of purely environmental reasons or cruelty to animals (although they factor greatly). My enjoyment of life has not diminished because of the choice. I won't chastise or argue with anyone who does want to eat meat because that's ridiculous and quite frankly none of my business. I think that anyone who follows the same three year journey that I have, involving an open mind and heart, might reach the same conclusion. Sustainably raised animals have an incredibly important role to play in farms and I won't rule out eating meat again in some capacity. Being open, non judgemental and questioning of all our decisions is a beautiful bohemian way to live.
Much Love, Maggie May
@outlierblog came and visited me late last year. In the chaos of preparing the shop for Christmas I hurriedly washed my hair and put make up on before running around the workshop space at @thinkthornbury to make sure I had flowers in a vase and rubbish in the bin. Josh had bought me flowers the day before, when I was having an absolute meltdown prior to his @thirtyseventy3070 album launch, because anxiety doesn't discriminate what days are more important. There was no way of knowing if proteas are the magic solution to crippling anxiety! They aren't, but they are beautiful and it was a kind and supportive gesture that made all the difference that day.
By the time @joanapartyka arrived for the interview I was a bundle of somewhat calmer energy and reading through the article she's crafted I feel like it's perhaps the best way I've ever been able see myself from another persons perspective. The words I scrambled out over a soy latte in my local cafe in Thornbury have been beautifully translated and I am in love with this illustration of myself. (Is that weirdly vain? Probably, but no one has ever drawn my portrait before so this is pretty exciting for me).
Thoughts for 2018! I need to step back and take stock of my achievements when they happen, instead of being a freight train of emotions headed straight off a cliff.
A lot of the time I worry that if I stop I'll loose energy or momentum for the things that I'm doing, but really by constantly pushing myself I am only going to run out of the fire that is inside of me. *see burn out.
This year I'm going to aim for a slow burn. A gentle golden warmth that encapsulates myself and my community.
Thank you @outlierblog, what a rare and wonderful opportunity to be able to read my own words back to myself and have the time to reflect on who I am and what I am doing with my life.
If you're interested in hearing me answer some interesting questions (and swear altogether way too much, oh gosh I shouldn't be allowed out of the house) head over to @outlierblog.
I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the interview.
Much Love, Maggie May
What a birthday experience to give your friend - book one of my glass making courses through my website - Jenieyolland.com for the best prices. There’s always a discount when two people book on together so come with your bestie and share the fun.
While this ‘lil biz is a partnership of two creative folk who seem to operate on the same plane, we still come to this from different mediums – photography and copywriting. So we decided that when we landed upon things we loved - quotes, words of wisdom, whatevs – we’d let you know WHY they resonated with us. AND stick with us; we’ve set you a little challenge at the end.
Here goes our first #thatsoundsnice_inspo post:
AMY: "But I can't write, Amy!" "I'm not a writer, I'm a photographer!" "I don't need to use words, my photos tell the story!" I can't tell you how many times I've heard these statements when I chat to photographers about the importance of writing. I get it - getting vulnerable and digging deep is scary. Taking the plunge into unfamiliar territory is uncomfortable. But let me tell you - writing doesn't have to be any of those things! With the right skills and tools writing can be cathartic, fun and beautiful! Your voice has the power to shape the way your viewer experiences your photographs, you just have to start.
CHRISTINA: I usually hate telling people they ‘need’ to do anything, but on this one - I promise, you just need to start.
Whether it’s lack of mojo or terror of being judged, I hear the same thing all the time: “I can’t write!” I call bullshit. You can, I promise (again) that you just need to start.
Have you not posted to your socials in a while – simply because the thought of captioning it terrifies you? I have. Have you avoided blogging because it feels overwhelming? I have.
I have mojo-less days and creative blockages, where nothing ‘feels’ right, and that’s when I brain dump. I write, and sometimes I hate it, but it ‘sparks’ a little something and a switch turns on. For me, creativity begets creativity.
Et Fin! Yay! That was fun!
So here is your challenge.
Think of an image or a session. Particularly one you’ve had trouble captioning in the past, on your blog or your socials or anywhere.
START. Just start. Start by describing something that isn't obvious about the image you are sharing. The smell. The sounds. The light.
These are for YOU, dear followers, for the yippees, hoorays and congrats you called through and DMed, and for the sharing and the tagging of your photography friends.
We knew there was a wee need out there for our course but still, we were biting our fingernails as we pressed go on launch day, and YOU LIKE US, YOU REALLY LIKE US!
Now? We knuckle down and make sure we’re bringing you the best damn course and content that sees YOU geared up for the demands or running a photography business. Remember, if there’s anything you’d like to see included, or you’d like to learn about - let us know. Education should always be communal.
Don’t forget to join our list (web link in profile) to stay informed of launch dates - woohoo!
Flowers and 📸: for you by our fave @thelittlemarketbunch - this is the medium roses bouquet 😍

Now for the next installment of WHO ARE WE AND WHY THE HELL SHOULD YOU BELIEVE US?
I’m Amy, a Melbourne-based family lifestyle photographer and educator for appreciators of the unconventional. I am passionate about helping photographers to let go of the “shoulds” and to really embrace their stories and their quirks, and then getting them to share that shit with the world. For me, it’s not about perfection – it’s about embracing the chaos and the connections and having the courage to put it out there.
I’ve earned a bit of a rep as the “photographer’s photographer” and I LOVE working with like-minded creatives both in my photography and teaching via my ‘Life: Unmade’ mentoring and retreats. I’ve been lucky enough to photograph and teach the most weird and wonderful humans, many of whom have become fast friends. You can find my client work over at @amyrushbrookphoto.
I’ve worked hard and been lucky enough to travel the world thanks to this photography gig including LA, Stockholm and London last year and I’m teaching at @clickawayconference in Florida (✈️🏖🍹) and @thefamilynarrative in New Orleans (✈️🔮🎷) this year.
Home life is fabulous chaos at its best, with my bearded love, my remarkable boy and my two terrific step-kids rotating through the house throughout the week. It works and it’s (mostly ‘cos, you know…kids) wonderful.
@uhhuhdigital and I have been working towards this collaboration for a couple of years now, and to see it come to life in the form of @thatsoundsnice_ is a massive tick off the bucket list for me!

We call these next couple of posts: WHO ARE WE AND WHY THE HELL SHOULD YOU BELIEVE US?
I’m Christina, a copywriter and digital strategist based in Melbourne who loves writing the kind of conversational, quirky copy that helps brands sound like they’re run by ACTUAL humans.
I’m often described as kind of ‘bubbly’ (also: over excitable…) and came to educating others 8 years ago when I realised I could
a) public speak without a problem if I loved what I was talking about and
b) was able to fill my metaphorical extrovert’s cup by talking to people for a living. Talking. For a living. It honestly doesn’t get better than that for me!
I love working with people to pin down their brand personality and help them to boldly radiate that personality through their writing and socials.
I have a copywriting business at @uhhuhdigital, a husband who is obsessed with bicycles and two cute kids in school, as of this year (PARTY ON WAYNE).
That Sounds Nice has been a long time in the making and I’m so excited to be working with my business bestie @amyrushbrookphoto and I’m looking forward to seeing you at our workshop – don’t forget to signup for launch dates via the link in our profile!

(Photo by the inimitable @hellourbansafari - keep an eye out for her Headshot Days this year!)
You know you can take pretty-damn-great photos.
You have a website and a following, but now is the time to blend your creativity with your personality and your words.
Once upon a time, a photographer and a copywriter got together and designed a workshop.
We know you want to hone in on:
- who you are – you as the pretty face and exciting voice of YOUR photography business
- who ‘they’ are – and by that we mean your DREAM clients.
- Write right, alright? – You want some easily-actionable methods to speak to and write for those clients (and yourself) easily, consistently and with a bucketload of personality.
This is one photography workshop where you won’t be bringing your camera (unless you want to take photos of us, ‘cos we’re pretty gorgeous). Who we are:
Amy is a working photographer based in Melbourne who travels the globe educating other photographers to stop ‘shoulding’ all over themselves to actually have the photography business they want to have. Find her at @amyrushbrookphoto
Christina is a copywriter based in Melbourne who specialises in writing funky copy for working creatives. Christina is a word nerd who loves educating others because teaching is the best form of learning! You can find her at @uhhuhdigital

Finishing 2017 with a piece almost as big as myself!
I tried on my wedding dress yesterday and it held the most inspiring and motivating energy. I've never had anything made to measure for my body before and to say it fit like a glove would be an understatement. It felt like the dress that I was always supposed to get married in.
It's a strange sensation to feel so connected to a garment and feel so excited about the day I get to wear it. I've never experienced anything like it.
This piece holds a lot of fierce energy in it. It's strong and organic with just a touch of balanced uniform structure. It feels very much like the line I have had to walk this year with being creative and starting my own business. All my own insecurities, creative passion and desire to support myself through whatever challenges I face have pushed my relationship to it's absolute breaking point, in the best possible way. I know this piece will bring a passionate energy in whatever home she finds.
If you would like to purchase this piece please message me.
I am grateful for all the experiences I have been fortunate to be apart of this year. All the hope, love and nervous energy I felt in my gorgeous @lostinparisbridal dress yesterday encapsulate the past 7 years of Josh and I meeting, falling in love and committing ourselves to one another. So many more exciting times to come.
I hope that whilst you're reflecting on your 'top 9' photos of this year that you also remember the challenges you have encountered and the tremendous strength it takes to be who you are. We are all living in a time of enormous change and I hope you're able to breathe and welcome the new year with positivity and the knowledge that you got this.
Who doesn't love video? Did you know that when I shoot video content, not only do I get great video content to share but I can also create great still images, audio, smaller bite-size clips and more? If you've been wanting to get more strategic with your video content, build collateral that you can multi-purpose and give your customers, clients and community more insight into you, your business and your message then this workshop is for you! [ ]
Spend the day with me working through hero video content, using your phone for EPIC vlogs and videos, insta stories, creating a video strategy, using apps and tools to make video creation fun and easy and more. Head to events link in bio and book your place today.
Learning how to take moments of calm in a world that expects instant results has been a super powerful lesson for me recently. My anxiety is so heightened by my desire to have engaging and positive experience with everyone I meet or ship my rope to. Last year I had a very structured process to how I managed my time and after opening @thinkthornbury I went into a bit of a frenzy. My confidence felt shattered with the loss of structure and panic attacks about how my actions affected other people's creative process and life got very overwhelming. I've been quite depressed a lot of this year. The expectations I placed on myself creatively and pressure about planning our wedding have made 2017 a year of very high highs and very low lows. There have been days where I've had 'smiley shop lady' face on and then closed the door and walked home to completely fall to pieces in an uncontrollable mess. It's placed a lot of strain on my relationship and I feel very grateful to have such a beautiful and supportive partner in Josh.
I feel as though things have become a lot clearer recently and I am taking much better care of my mental health. Yoga, diet changes and more routine with my schedule are really helping. Learning how to build a sense of calm and breathe are daily lessons that even right now I feel like I am working on. I'm excited to knot all these emotions into my next piece completely uninterrupted after the hectic energy of Christmas subsides. Everything is always in motion and we need to learn how to move with it.
Much, Love Maggie May
As the year comes to an end how are you going to make the last couple of weeks (or less) count? 💖
Last night I took some time out to write down the things I was grateful for in 2017. It blew my mind how many lessons I had learnt in my first year of “soultrepreneuring”. Leaving my safety net and the uninspiring full time job to inspire and mentor people to pursue their own dreams and passions was something I hadn’t pictured when I began the journey. What an incredible year!
How are you going to make the last few days of 2017 count? As you begin to wind dowb will you start thinking about how you can manifest even more abundance for 2018? 🙏
Take time out for you and #makeitcount .
You thrive when you shine. ✨
2018 @middleaisle Macramé Workshops!
This Christmas I'm giving myself the gift of organisation!
Here are the first four months of dates for 2018. If 2017 has been anything to go by, you'll want to lock your place in asap. I have gift vouchers on my website if you would like to pre pay and book into any of these classes. Just buy yourself a gift voucher and email me which date you would like!
Classes, as always, are limited to 8 people per session so, grab a ticket, put the date in your diary and don't miss out.
I've also designed myself a new logo! The perks of having a graphic design degree 😂.
I'd love to know what you think of my new look! It feels very strange but after a couple of years with the same logo but I felt like a little refresh was due.
People always ask me why I decided on the name 'Middle Aisle'. It's what they called getting married in the 1920's and it's funny because I picked it before I started making Macramé. I loved the idea that the name represented a creative journey I was about to undertake with myself and when I fell in love with Macramé shortly afterwards it made even more sense. It was like I was always on a path to 'tying the knot' with myself! Funny how these things happen when you're open to a creative life and everything around you.
I'll be in @thinkthornbury all day today. 11am till 6pm.
Much Love, Maggie May
On the blog! As you’re ready to start planning your 2018 (consciously creating!) here are some questions to ask yourself/ steps to do the whole process.
Especially good for creating MEANINGFUL financial goals!
On the blog baby, alexisharvey.com - then hit the ‘blog’ tab at the top ❤️🙏
This is me trying not to buy all of my own Christmas stock from @thinkthornbury.
There are so many special pieces and things that have disappeared wrapped up in brown paper and string the last two weeks. I'm not really sure where the time has gone.
I was looking in the mirror last night and gave myself a moment to appreciate that I have been feeling really healthy! Josh and I started a vegetarian diet this month and because I'm also not eating dairy because of my eczema, it's been mostly vegan too! Weirdly, I haven't missed meat. I'm trying to pay more attention to what I have for breakfast as traditionally it's been just black coffee and I've been told it's not the best way to make sure your body has fuel for the day...
I am trying my best to keep on top of emails and messages and phone calls but I always seem to forget something and I wonder how I could be communicating and doing things better. There is always one person who gets forgotten and then I feel awful and anxious and have no idea how to think about things rationally without falling in a heap over the shop counter.
There are just too many things to keep track of at the moment.
Last night Josh and I sat down to do our wedding planning/invite people to our wedding and it struck me that we've been engaged for a whole year! As I was going through the 'online wedding checklist' I found there were jobs that it was saying we should have done months ago... Perhaps I could have done them if I wasn't trying to run two small businesses!!! 2018, things are gonna be different! I have the first 6 months of my workshops planned out, in an attempt to be more organised, and hopefully I will also be able to head overseas to teach some advanced Macramé classes and have a honeymoon midway thought the year. At the moment I am going to focus my energy on feeling healthy, eating properly, getting my bloody wedding invites out and helping as many people as I can till Christmas Eve to find the perfect present for their most dearly loved friend and family in @thinkthornbury.
Focus on the things you can do and remember that the pressure isn't real. There is always more time.
Six sparkling pendants going express today! These were made on Thursday night and will be arriving finished Wednesday morning for them to give away as Christmas gifts. Phew. I love it when a plan works.
#throwback to last Saturday morning, getting set up for my last workshop of the year!
I didn’t share anything about that workshop on here so doing a late share 😘
My favourite parts where;
+ Your money story + Getting to the bottom of, and naming, the fears holding you back
+ Connecting to the finances required for your life vision and finding a way to start that process NOW
+ The loving, supportive, like minded community created!!
As always, I love the hospitality and amazing space provided by @thecoworkco 🙏❤️
Here’s to some holidays after ending the year with a bang! 💥
You know a small studio is a good studio - I love my new space and I get the feeling that everyone else does too. Here is one of my students from last night’s Jewelry Workshop. Happy days at Church Street Richmond. Loads of dates for 2018 up on my website book for yourself or give it as a gift! JenieYolland.com
