There have been so many places I called home throughout the years. From the family home I grew up in back in Michigan, to my apartment on rue Amélie in Paris, and the several houses in Los Angeles I used to call home. I remember the way I learned the pacing of steps to the bathroom at night without turning on the light. Or the way the sliding glass door creaked at a certain point. I remember the creek in our backyard, and how it used to freeze in wintertime. Or how we could see those golden California sunsets hit the ocean at a certain point if we climbed on top of the roof. At each location, it felt like I knew every little corner and character of the space, as if it were my own, forever.
.
It's strange to think of the impermanence of all those places, how one physical space becomes intimately known and familiar, only later to be completely unknown and inaccessible, belonging to someone else. Some of those places were so formative, lending a backdrop to different phases of life.
.
I think about how those spaces are now someone else's, and it feels a little bit like we unknowingly share a secret—our common familiarity with a place. There is sadness too, knowing that those spaces are no longer mine, physically at least.
.
Every place is like this though. It seems rare to meet someone who has always lived in the same place since childhood through old age. We move around, and life changes. The only way to return to those places is through shadowy memories.

It was cold and damp (I was constantly wiping condensation from the lens) on the beach at Russian Gulch State Park in Mendocino, but our fire, a bottle of red wine from Anderson Valley, and good company kept us warm enough.

Successful ranch trip: lots of family visiting, a jaunt with Cindy to lovely Elk Beach while the guys went crabbing, gathering fallen apples and figs for our pigs, and cutting a tree for our first Christmas on the farm. 🌄🌊🦀🍎🌲 #somuchtobethankfulfor #mendocino #mendocinocoast #dungenesscrab #heirloomapples #jonagold #romes #ranchlife #cutyourownchristmastree

Sea Glass Beach in Mendocino has beaches of sea glass due to humans using the area as a dump in the early 1900’s. Though dominated by brown, clear, & green glass, if you search enough you can find blues as well as the rarest, reds, which are said to originate from old car taillights from a time when they were sill made of glass.

Not too bad for 3 hours in the skiff. Didn’t hammer em, but didn’t come home empty handed. #lings #rockfish #seatrout #pacific #norcal #mendocinocoast #fishing #huntergatherer
Nature is pretty incredible if you take the time and patience to explore and see it. This is what Glass Beach looks like. Have you ever wondered where those bags of polished rocks come from?
