This is Metate Arch in Grand Staircase-Escalante NM.
Due to the rocks, the space around the arch is rather confined and I found it quite difficult get a good composition. I finally opted for an untracked 3 panel panorama, shot with my Samyang 24mm f/1.4 lens.
Due to the narrow space, my first light setup overexposed the foreground scene. I therefore had to find a way to lower my LED panels below their minimum output. For this I put a cotton bag over one panel and used the rocks behind me to reflect the light of the second light back to the scene. The inside of the arch was lit by a small omnidirectional LED light on minimum power.
A few days ago @Wayne_Pinkston published a very similar image of Metate Arch, which he took in collaboration with @roycebairphoto the night before my visit. I can’t believe that I missed two of the best nightscape photographers by just one night!!! On the other hand, it is very interesting to compare my work with what the masters of the trade achieve under the same conditions…

A glimpse of the Galaxy floating over the Ancient Bristlecone Pines, California. Congratulations to Michael Shainblum. Some of these living trees are over 4000 years old. Music by @jteveringham. Compare this time lapse video with the next post, which is a single still photograph from the same location —also by Michael.
Note Michael’s camera/rail movements in this time lapse, which follow the movement of the Milky Way, and causes the foreground to pass before us. Tracking hint for doing your own time lapse: our earth is rotating at 15 degrees per hour. || Please show support to our guest artists by visiting their IG gallery .

✨🗻✨ Two years later, it happened again. Even though I thought I already knew what to expect, the experience this time around was nothing short of exceptional. Mauna Kea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has proven to be one of the best places to stargaze, but the weather varies widely. We got to experience freezing temperatures and even roads covered in ice with fog around us, but luckily, it cleared up later and we got to capture this time lapse (for now just a boomerang teaser) and tons of other footage that will definitely make it into the final edit from Hawaii.
I really can’t explain this whole adventure with words, but hopefully the visuals can. Which we’ll be posting soon 🤠
