Nowadays, when something good happens to me, I can’t help myself from saying “Thank you Universe!” And if something doesn’t go quite my way - I have to smile (maybe not immediately though...), recognising that it is the Universe/Life teaching me something. I like it when I receive books as Christmas gifts as it keeps the spirits up (and the practice going) through the dark days of an English winter 😬⠀

The latest one I’ve read is the Science of Meditation. Don’t fear - you don’t have to be scientific to understand it.⠀
⠀
It’s a very honest trawl through research on meditation including the authors critiquing their own early studies (for bias) and noting the studies that fail to meet ‘gold standard’.⠀
⠀
What does work (according to their review)?⠀
⠀
- breath awareness meditation - people were less anxious and reactive (lessening that amygdala ‘fight or flight response)⠀
⠀
- beginners’ ‘high’ - they notice benefits quickly but wears off so need to practice (like everything,hey?!)⠀
⠀
- loving kindness meditation - can work as quickly as in eight hours (not non-stop practice either) in boosting empathy, and unconscious biases start reducing in 16 hours (wow).⠀
⠀
- Teen brain integration - This work also backs up what I blogged about last week re mindfulness activities helping the teen brain development, allowing more calm responses ⠀
And in a totally unscientific experiment (my life), I’ve noticed all these benefits - but it’s nice to see the evidence base.⠀

Practicing acceptance doesn't mean you don't give a shit about anything.
It means you're more in tune; more aware of your mind; what's going on. This makes for a quality of mind that means you're better able to either let go, or act...

HUH? Why meditation is like eating berries....🍓🍒🍓

So, you wouldn't eat one raspberry, or even a punnet of raspberries per week, and think - "OK, I'm done now, totally healthy, no need to eat fruit or veg again for another week."
.
And you wouldn't let yourself get totally ill with flu before you  thought about eating a vegetable or fruit (at least, usually. Fries don't count :P).
.
So why do you think that doing meditation once a week or only getting round to it when you're SUPER STRESSED AND BUSY AND ALREADY LIKE OMG, it going to have any effect?
.
Just as one fruit doesn't a healthy diet make, so one meditation session (or a couple, here and there), doesn't a peaceful mind make.
.
Sitting down, again and again, trying over and over, making it a regular, daily thing, rather that once in a blue moon (or a red raspberry) is what makes the difference.
.
That's where change comes from.
.
Regular, daily, consistent, changes in behaviour and consistent, easy-to-digest habits.
.

Get lost in the nature every day and go so far you cannot hear any sounds of cars, people, dogs. Nothing, but the slow swaying of the trees, wind lingering in the leaves, flutter of the birds wings. You know, the whole thing works this way that your internal world is always in sync with your external world. You’ll feel your breath calm down as the fresh air fills your lungs. Your mind will slowly start getting more and more quiet, until there’s no chatter going on and you will, maybe for the first time, become present. Mind is a powerful, powerful thing. Nature can beat it, though. On the good days the mind shuts up instantly as you walk into your green sanctuary. On the bad days, however, it takes some time. But eventually, you will come to the point where you’ll see and hear the surroundings being alive. Just stay long enough, go far enough and you will get there. And stay long enough so you notice the difference when you come back into the “real world”. That’s what’s going to keep you coming back, day after day. There is something about the nature, so hard to put into words, but it is there you will meet yourself, become yourself and lose yourself. Even if it’s just for a split second, you will become the way she is.

Het geeft echter mensen een #gevoel van '#minder goed' dan je wilt zijn. Je bent #nu minder gelukkig dan je was voordat die gedachte zelfs maar ontstond.

Penso( e spero ) di non essere l'unica persona a perdersi nella spirale dei propri pensieri e a cominciare discorsi infiniti con se stesso, discorsi che a volte mi fanno pensare: "Cavolo! Che bel discorso che ho fatto peccato che sia stato l'unico a sentirlo". È un pò da pazzi me ne rendo conto come quando passando per la strada incrociamo qualcuno e ci accorgiamo che sta parlando da solo pensiamo sia fuori di testa eppure se ragioniamo un pò ci rendiamo conto che è una cosa normalissima! Chi di noi non parla constantemente con se stesso!?!? La mente da sola impazzisce per questo bisogna imparare a stare soli e dargli libero sfogo. Se non impariamo prima a conoscere noi stessi come possiamo pretendere di conoscere gli altri?? Fatemi sapere cosa ne pensate riguardo a quest'ultima frase qui sotto nei commenti⏬⏬⏬ Ci conto😉. Travelling alone.

Carioca heart. Carioca is the name of the people from Rio. I like to think I’m a little Carioca even if Felix disagrees and thinks that I look too much "gringa" (foreign). I’ve been asked what my tips are for women who are considering travelling alone. I’ve traveled alone many times and it really is among the most beautiful experiences of my life. I encourage everyone to travel alone for a while. It has been the best school for me and it influenced the rest of my life. I traveled alone for 6 months in Brazil from south to north and 4 months in India. Everything went well and I met on my way a lot of women who were traveling alone too. And when you travel alone, you're never really alone ...! It would take a long post but here are some tips:

1. Try as much as you can to be like the people of the place. (For example, in Rio, I go out with the bare minimum (minimum of clothing 🙈, but especially money, electronic objects etc.) Always go out without jewelry, dress like the people of the place, etc.
2. Have faith in the Universe. Honestly, I experienced great magic when I traveled to India. I was really carefree and my actions were sometimes reckless but I made amazing memories with even more amazing people by simply having faith that everything was going to be fine.
3. Everything is energy: If we exude bad energy and we’re afraid of getting robbed or attacked, it might just happen. Stay chill, and high spirit, it helps!

Annie has been practising meditation and mindfulness for over 6 years and is also trained in Laughter Wellness. Both these techniques were recently taught to an audience of 1,000 at Adelaide Town Hall at TEDx Adelaide in November. Annie has since published a book to go with her talk called The Little Book of Still. She runs community and corporate resilience training in schools, aged care, NFPs and with social workers. Annie lives in Glenelg South with her husband Mark and their dog Meg and emigrated from the UK in 2006. She also recently accomplished over 50 new things in her 50th year.
