I have a friend named Url and that's how he spells it. It suprised me to find his name in my morning post: u r loved. Yesterday I was talking on the phone with Url from L.A. (Lower Alabama which is actually the Florida panhandle). He was my best drinking bud and sweetest and most dysfunctional lover, back in the day. (If you are newly sober I do not recommend hanging out with old drinking buds. Get new friends and if you don't you're bound to get a haircut or something like that, and I do have new friends and 9 years of sobriety, but this guy, I just have to hear his voice once in while...) So me and Url we're talking about Elmore Leonard books, the new Alien movie gonna come out, bald eagle vs. wild turkey as the national bird, is my son gonna be a skater or a red neck or something else entirely (!?), how pretty the birch trees are before the leaves fill in...and Url says something about this planet being hell. I wish I could remember his exact words, but I asked do you really feel like you're living in hell? Yes he really does. Huh. I love being sober and being able to see the glass as half full and getting fuller (more full?) but I hate it that I can't take people with me. I can't make anyone see - who's not ready to see - how much better this life FEELS. If you made it to the end of this rant, gimme a hell yeah.
You are loved. It's true. I got this message written in crayon on a red construction-paper heart in a bag lunch prepared for me by a church kid. I found the note on my lunch break at work, and it changed my world. At one month sober, after a relapse, I somehow (long story) ended up in Marietta, GA with no money and knowing not a soul. Too proud to phone my family in Wisconsin, I had to accept help from a shelter run by M.U.S.T. Ministries or I would've been on the streets. I found a job and the shelter provided room and board (including bag lunches) until I was back on my feet. I realized then that I do belong in this world or I wouldn't be here. And that I am loved by family, friends, strangers, God (as we each understand God), and by the universe itself. And that goes for you, too. Now it's time to learn to love ourselves. #love#hope#sobermom#soberpunx#artistinrecovery#minneapolisart#homelessness

Friday used to be a big trigger for me, when I first got sober (9 years ago Jan.4). I had been #drinking to excess many more days a week than just Friday, but on Friday and Saturday nights it was socially acceptable, so I drank with reckless abandon. I was "partying". But aren't parties supposed to be fun? I can't say I remember much from those long, blurry nights. Now Friday just means I get to fall asleep knowing the next day is a day spent at home, and with family and friends, not at work. That simple pleasure is enough for me, but if you want to party, discover ways to do it sober! You don't have to stay away from the #night life. Make sober friends you can take along with you when you go out. How to do this: go to LOTS of meetings and sober events. Then, when that band or event comes to town that you HAVE to see, you'll have cool people to choose from to invite along. #Party sober. #Sober is the new cool. Why did we ever think getting wasted was the cool thing to do? Sure, there was media and peer pressure, but in the end, weren't we simply justifying our disease? Plan ahead to have a good sober #Friday night, even if it's just a meeting or a night in. It's going to be way better than it was before you got sober. And remember: #sobriety is the only true cure for #hangovers . This is the good life. Enjoy it. #minneapolisart#sobermom#soberisthenewcool#soberpunx#under30inrecovery#ejsmit#partysober
Sooooo...it's snowing in Minnesota this fine April morning. ❄️❄️❄️ hmm. Just in case you need some spring time cheer and a reminder that it is, in fact, spring, check out Art In Bloom at the @artsmia today through Sunday! It's a veritable explosion of greenery and flowers. I even have a piece there this year (hint: it's in the Asia gallery! 😉) check out my latest blog post for some some photos I took from the event in 2015 to see what it's like.
After an exhilarating #fashionweekminnesota we wanted to keep the creative juices flowing, literally. The MIA has a display of living bags of algae right now. You can breathe into them and help them to proliferate. 💚🌄🌏🌿♻
Also, don't forget the salon's grand opening on May 12! 6pm. Live music, refreshments, AMAZING PRIZES from @intelligentnutrients , @the_cookie_creative , and MORE! 🙌🌈👍
When she's not rocking out on the sax, @tylerallix can be found with a camera in hand. This Friday from 7-9pm at Espresso Royale Cafe Downtown Minneapolis, Tyler is presenting a variety of prints from her travels and adventures 📸🌎😃 Then you can catch us at @unionmpls for the afterparty! 🙌🏼
Local artist Josie Lewis has been taking the Instagram arts community by storm with her incredible rainbow paintings in the last few months. Her attention to detail, color choices, & overall aesthetic are worth exploring! #Repost @josielewisart
Rainbow star triangle hex color chart watercolor painting--with coffee! ☕️☕️☕️ I got a lot of questions on the materials that I used for this project. I made a 4 minute YouTube behind-the-scenes video answering some of them. (Link in profile.) Also, i'll be making more of these videos for you guys. What sorts of things would you be interested to learn more about?
Mug, watering can, first tulip. .
I spent a very long time today musing with a 4 year old about why so many tulips have bloomed in the neighborhood, and yet our yard is still colorless. I have a feeling this red beauty will be open tomorrow, and my boy will be very happy! Gotta sneak in my #mugshotmonday before it's too late. Happy Spring.
