The left engine of #Flight1549 after it was rebuilt for display. Two 16 lb geese flew into both engines, causing the A320 to lose forward thrust, giving the plane nowhere to go but down. Only the left engine spent 8 days at the bottom of the Hudson River before it was recovered. And fun fact: the spiral pattern on the nose cone is designed to keep birds away!
“A recipe for disaster was beginning to gather speed. Cold weather, rain and wet snow, a fast current and a full plane were all the ingredients needed to ensure numerous casualties and difficult conditions.” -#FDNY Division Chief Steven J. Morelli discusses #MiracleOnTheHudson , the 2009 crash of US Airways Flight 1549 into the Hudson River near 45th St. in Manhattan. FDNY members treated 88 civilians on the Manhattan side of the crash, and all 150 passengers and five crew members survived. Getting the opportunity to speak with the legendary Tom Hanks is almost like nothing else I'll ever do. He is the most genuine, humble, funny and generous man you'll ever meet. Definitely one of my favorite celebrity interviews ever. Tonight on #ET#sully#tomhanks#miracleonthehudson
American Red Cross volunteer and movie extra Dottie Brier recalls her role in the Red Cross response to Miracle on Hudson in 2009 and what it meant to reenact that role in the movie SULLY. "My role was disaster mental health. The Mental Health Services program provides mental health counseling as needed to people affected by disaster. We offer short-term counseling right at the time of the disaster to help people cope with their reactions to a devastating situation. The emotional aspect is a very important part of a response to an emergency... I worked with the survivors who were there to support whoever wanted to talk with us so they could express their feelings and get validation that what they are feeling was expected following a traumatic experience." The American Red Cross will be featured in scenes in the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ feature film SULLY about the pilot who heroically landed U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on the icy Hudson River in early 2009. The movie, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Oscar winner Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, opens in theaters today, September 9.
If you remember “Miracle on the Hudson”, you know the Michael P Murphy. First boat on scene of Flight 1549, whose emergency landing in the Hudson River is NYC history. She pulled up to the right wing of the sinking airplane and created a bridge to the ferry boats, rescuing it’s passengers. We’re honored to have her here with us this weekend. 🍻⚓️ #miracleonthehudson
"Miracle on the Hudson" Captain Chesley Sullenberger was kind enough to pose for a photo with our morning crew after joining us on Friday's show. "He talked about "the 'h' word" and how while he is very reluctant to call himself a hero....he understands the desire for the general public to find and identify heroes," Sam Rubin said.
Sam also praised the new Sully movie, which opens in theaters today. -posted by KTLA web staff #ktlamorningnews#sullymovie#sully#miracleonthehudson
Can't put this book down! Partly because it's helping me understand a friend's life & story, and partly because it's so relatable & full of honesty and grace.
I have certainly never been through a plane crash, but can see glimpses of myself in the healing process, the emotions, and the desire for control. @thebooksinkorswim, thank you for sharing your story. It is a selfless gift of yourself to allow others to experience more grace & healing for themselves! "I also started to realize that in the name of helping, people will often step on your toes. They will say things and do things that may seem unkind and less than helpful, but they usually mean well. They're just trying to help within the limitations of their own knowledge and and their understanding and they are suggesting what they believe to be beneficial. It may work. Or it might not. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for all." - Sink or Swim
3-d airplane model made out of cardboard, clay, a bunch on hot glue, and paint. Took a lot of work, but I think it looks pretty good so it's fine. Looks way better than the sketch, that's for sure.
This is just a note to what's labeled on this plane: Don't give away what isn't yours, you have absolutely no right. I could say so much more, but I won't.
This plane was for a project. The gist of this project is you are assigned a certain aviator and you have to do a bunch of smaller projects regarding them to earn a certain amount of points, one of which is building an aircraft model. Well, I was assigned the legend Chesley Sullenberger, who managed to land his passenger plane in the Hudson River despite engine failure from hitting a flock of Canadian Geese. He saved all 155 of his passengers, and got the publicity he deserved for his heroism.
The more ya know.
Had a wonderful opportunity to work with some talented actors and actresses today!
The best part? I met two people who were on US Airways Flight 1549 (Miracle on the Hudson.) Flight attendant Sheila Dail and passenger Dick Richardson. We also got to see the actual plane and hear the first-hand accounts of Dick & Sheila.
Dick has turned his experience into a unique leadership program that is phenomenal! I want to go back and experience the whole program.
Check it out at https://www.experiencetolead.com/
In a few weeks- you might just see me and the other fine talent on the promotions for the program.
This is an out of the ordinary post, but I wanted to share this story of exceptional courage in the face of fear.
My friend Karin Rooney gave me the privilege of helping to tell her story of crash landing on the Hudson River and her journey to overcome the severe anxiety that stemmed from the crash. Our book comes out soon! For more information, follow @thebooksinkorswim
