Was taking out the recycling yesterday when I saw this little guy in there. They're supposed to make you sick if they bite you but I ended up catching it. They're so cool! They get huge too. #monitorlizard#guam#reptiles
This lengthy lizard is the Mertens's Water Monitor (Varanus mertensi)! Also called the Mertens' Water Monitor or misspelled as the Merten's Water Monitor, it is found along the forests and coastlines of Western Australia. Although no classification under the IUCN has been issued, it is listed as vulnerable by the Northern Territory and under CITES Appendix II. It is threatened by the invasive cane toads that poison them when ingested. They can stay in the water and remain submerged when they feel threatened. You can see these lizards at places such as @lakesuperiorzoo , @zooatl , @philadelphiazoo , @bronxzoo , and more.
