We had such an amazing morning at the Gandan Monastery in Ulaanbaatar today.
For 5 years I have been wanting permission to photograph the monks during their morning chants... and thanks to the help of my tour company that i have worked with for the last five years, it finally happened... My group this morning was granted permission to get a private escorted tour through the entire grounds. We got to photograph the chanting monks, visit the temple where the young children were learning, then off to another temple where the elder monks, or Llama's, were... This was an awesome way to spend a morning if you are a photographer and enjoy capturing images like this.
In this image, a monk is served his morning airag and the sunlight from the window illuminated the steam coming out of the brass bowl. #mongolia#monk#airag#people#peopleoftheworld#travel#travelphotography#igs_photos#igersworldwide#kevinpepperphotography#asia#religion#portrait#naturallighting
Wanna know what a happy monk looks like? Well this is it! Lol!
Most of you already know Nyana. He moved to England this summer. And while he enjoys discovering a different continent, living in the city isn't easy for someone like him. For those who are a bit familiar with Buddhism, he is a Theravada monk following the Thai forest tradition. This means he has spent many years living in the forest, getting his strength and inner peace from spending time outdoors, meditating in silence.
Now imagine such a person suddenly transplanted into a big city with constant noise and distraction. The first weeks were really hard for him, especially because his temple is quite understaffed so there isn't much time to get outside.
To our (and his) surprise, he was authorised by his abbott to leave for 24h, so we took him out to the countryside, spent the night in a quiet guest house by the forest and drove back to London in the morning.
This photo is another one of these unplanned moments that end up becoming your favourite ones. We did take some pretty shots with the pretty white rocks typical of the British south coast. But when we were all done suddenly he spread his arms, and he stayed like that for a while. Here I can breathe, he said, with a big smile on his face.
When I showed him this picture he said : I like to stand like that when I get to a quiet place outside. I feel like an eagle. Free...
