Qilenso (pronounced โ€œKilen-soโ€) originates from the Killenso area in the Guji zone of Ethiopiaโ€™s Southern Oromia State.

Processed at the privately owned Qilenso washing station (whose name translates to โ€˜Airโ€™), coffee cherries are produced and delivered daily by 550-600 small producers. The majority of producers farm organically on small plots of land (averaging 0.7 hectares) at 1,900-2000 metres above sea ๐ŸŒŠ

THE STORY // The Zelaya family has been growing coffee for over 100 years and four generations. This renowned family owns farms throughout Guatemala and grows one of only a handful of genuine โ€˜Antiguaโ€™ coffees (coffees grown in the Antigua valley area bounded by three volcanoes โ€“ Agua, Acatenango and Fuego). Finca Santa Clara is 90 hectares in size and is located on the fertile southern slopes of the Volcรกn de Agua in the Antigua Valley at 1,600-1,830 metres above sea level. The farm has been managed since 1988 by Ricardo Zelaya, the 4th generation of the Zelaya family to have produced coffee at Santa Clara.
Ricardo is passionately committed to both quality and sustainability. His farms are scrupulously well-managed โ€“ from the careful selection of varietals planted, to the close supervision of the dry and wet mills โ€“ both of which are located on the property and owned by Ricardo, giving him complete control over quality from picking through to export.

THE STORY // Kiamabara is a coffee โ€œfactoryโ€ (washing station) located near the town of Karatina in the heart of Nyeri. Home to the extinct volcano Mount Kenya, this region has rich red volcanic soil, and produces some of the best coffee in Kenya.

Kiamabara is owned by the Mugaga Farmer Cooperative Society. The factory was built in the early 1980โ€™s to process cherry from the small producers in the area. Today 910 producers contribute to the washing station. They own small plots of land at an average altitude of 1,900m above sea level, and most grow SL-28 cultivars (a Bourbon hybrid from the 1930s developed by Scot Laboratories, now the National Agricultural Laboratories of Kenya)

THE STORY // Kiamabara is a coffee โ€œfactoryโ€ (washing station) located near the town of Karatina in the heart of Nyeri. Home to the extinct volcano Mount Kenya, this region has rich red volcanic soil, and produces some of the best coffee in Kenya.

Kiamabara is owned by the Mugaga Farmer Cooperative Society. The factory was built in the early 1980โ€™s to process cherry from the small producers in the area. Today 910 producers contribute to the washing station. They own small plots of land at an average altitude of 1,900m above sea level, and most grow SL-28 cultivars (a Bourbon hybrid from the 1930s developed by Scot Laboratories, now the National Agricultural Laboratories of Kenya)

THE STORY //In the late 1980s, Pablo Josรฉ Ferrigno Figueroa, a third generation coffee grower, had the fortune to attend a conference in which the topic of โ€˜qualityโ€™ was widely discussed as the future of coffee. In 1991, Pablo decided to embark on the new adventure of establishing a coffee farm devoted entirely to the production of specialty coffee.
Pabloโ€™s roots were in coffee: his grandfather came from Italy and had established several farms alongside a coffee exporting business. His father also had a farm. Pablo had cultivated an interest in coffee from an early age and had worked on his familyโ€™s farms for years as a young adult. However, all of the familyโ€™s experience was with low grown coffee in Guatemalaโ€™s warm coastal areas. Specialty coffee required a different climate, not to mention a different approach!
Being a young entrepreneur, Pablo opted for Alta Verapaz โ€“ a region that despite its wet and cool climate, gathered together all the growing conditions he was looking for. He ended up finding a lot in the town of Tactico which was not at all a common place for coffee production due to its unusually cold weather. Many were skeptical of how he would go there.

Even today, Santa Sofia is the only coffee farm in the immediate micro-region and produces one of the best coffees in the region. Today the farm products Caturra, Catuai, and Typica varieties with a total annual production of some 500 bags per year, 100% of which is sold as specialty coffee.

THE STORY // Michael Gehrken was born in Germany but has farmed at Blackburn for well over 20 years. He fell in love with East Africa when he first visited in 1971, aged 19, and in 1983 moved to Tanzania for good to renovate his parentsโ€™ farm.  Back then, Blackburnโ€™s coffee trees were entirely overgrown and a troop of baboons had moved into the main house!

It was only in the late-eighties, when the government began to free up the market, that Michael started to explore farming coffee. Blackburn is now an award-winning estate, distinguished not only by taste but also by Michaelโ€™s commitment to ecologically-sound farming.

Blackburn is insecticide free โ€“ in other words, very close to producing fully organic coffee.  In previous years, spot applications of insecticide were required to control against green scale. But since the introduction of bio-control with seven separate species of ladybird, this is no longer necessary. No tilling is carried out and weeds are controlled by careful and sparing application of glyphosate. A leaf mulch of organic waste materials from the mill is then spread between the coffee plants to prevent re-growth and to lock moisture into the soil, which serves to sustain the coffee plants during the dry seasons.

THE STORY // Finca Veracruz was established by Sr. Pedro Echavarria, who recognised from the start that selecting the right location for his farms was critical. It was for this reason, that Pedro chose to grow coffee high up in the Andes in the Antioquia region, which he recognised had the perfect conditions to produce exceptional coffee, with a unique microclimate, rich volcanic soil and high altitude. By marrying these conditions with hard work and efficiency, he quickly grew both the area under cultivation and his reputation.
Finca Veracruz is one of 5 sister farms that are owned by Pedro and his family, which come under the banner of Santa Barbara Estate. The Echavarria family purchased the 16 hectare farm in the 90s. It sits at 1650m above sea level, and has its own small mill located on the property, allowing the Echavarria family to control quality on the farm from picking through to drying.

Caramel sweetness with notes of dark chocolate, red fruits and peach. -โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”-โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”-โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”-โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” THE STORY //In the late 1980s, Pablo Josรฉ Ferrigno Figueroa, a third generation coffee grower, had the fortune to attend a conference in which the topic of โ€˜qualityโ€™ was widely discussed as the future of coffee. In 1991, Pablo decided to embark on the new adventure of establishing a coffee farm devoted entirely to the production of specialty coffee. Pabloโ€™s roots were in coffee: his grandfather came from Italy and had established several farms alongside a coffee exporting business. His father also had a farm. Pablo had cultivated an interest in coffee from an early age and had worked on his familyโ€™s farms for years as a young adult. However, all of the familyโ€™s experience was with low grown coffee in Guatemalaโ€™s warm coastal areas. Specialty coffee required a different climate, not to mention a different approach! Being a young entrepreneur, Pablo opted for Alta Verapaz โ€“ a region that despite its wet and cool climate, gathered together all the growing conditions he was looking for. He ended up finding a lot in the town of Tactico which was not at all a common place for coffee production due to its unusually cold weather. Many were skeptical of how he would go there. Even today, Santa Sofia is the only coffee farm in the immediate micro-region and produces one of the best coffees in the region. Today the farm products Caturra, Catuai, and Typica varieties with a total annual production of some 500 bags per year, 100% of which is sold as specialty coffee.

THE STORY // Finca Veracruz was established by Sr. Pedro Echavarria, who recognised from the start that selecting the right location for his farms was critical. It was for this reason, that Pedro chose to grow coffee high up in the Andes in the Antioquia region, which he recognised had the perfect conditions to produce exceptional coffee, with a unique microclimate, rich volcanic soil and high altitude. By marrying these conditions with hard work and efficiency, he quickly grew both the area under cultivation and his reputation.
Finca Veracruz is one of 5 sister farms that are owned by Pedro and his family, which come under the banner of Santa Barbara Estate. The Echavarria family purchased the 16 hectare farm in the 90s. It sits at 1650m above sea level, and has its own small mill located on the property, allowing the Echavarria family to control quality on the farm from picking through to drying.

THE STORY // Michael Gehrken was born in Germany but has farmed at Blackburn for well over 20 years. He fell in love with East Africa when he first visited in 1971, aged 19, and in 1983 moved to Tanzania for good to renovate his parentsโ€™ farm.  Back then, Blackburnโ€™s coffee trees were entirely overgrown and a troop of baboons had moved into the main house!

It was only in the late-eighties, when the government began to free up the market, that Michael started to explore farming coffee. Blackburn is now an award-winning estate, distinguished not only by taste but also by Michaelโ€™s commitment to ecologically-sound farming.

Blackburn is insecticide free โ€“ in other words, very close to producing fully organic coffee.  In previous years, spot applications of insecticide were required to control against green scale. But since the introduction of bio-control with seven separate species of ladybird, this is no longer necessary. No tilling is carried out and weeds are controlled by careful and sparing application of glyphosate. A leaf mulch of organic waste materials from the mill is then spread between the coffee plants to prevent re-growth and to lock moisture into the soil, which serves to sustain the coffee plants during the dry seasons.
