Run streak day 1️⃣9️⃣9️⃣:
▪️
I had a bike/run brick on the schedule for today. I rode for 45 minutes with some 10:00 strong effort intervals thrown in there. I could not get my legs moving 😕! Then I practiced a quick transition into a 2 mile run, which felt great! My legs felt light as a feather. 1 of 2 isn’t terrible! ▪️
One huge benefit of my run streak that I’ve experienced is having so many built-in brick sessions. I don’t normally practice fast transitions unless it’s a dedicated brick workout, but all those times I run 1 mile after getting a bike session in is paying off in not experiencing noodle legs 🍝 in races. ▪️
Tomorrow is day 200!! 🎉🎉

I haven't run outside in about a week 😱 It's still super icy outside and the sidewalks where I live haven't been salted or cleared. Not really safe for stroller running quite yet. Hopefully this ice will melt soon because I'm getting bored of the treadmill already and we're all getting a bit of cabin fever 😂

Bit of a #lategram of this morning's treadmill run! I had a chaotic day. I lost my phone on the way to nursery drop off because it fell out of the stroller pocket while we were trying to push through the bumpy snow! Luckily, another parent found it and turned it in at school 😊  no post treadmill selfie because I didn't have a phone and this picture was taken right before I lost it (attempting to entertain my son in the carrier 😂) My run was 1km warm up, 3 x 1 mile @ 5:00/km pace with 3 min easy jog between and a cool down to 7km total. My treadmill is in km so I used 1.6km as a mile.

Somewhere between 2:38AM when I woke to put a kiddo back to bed and 6:01 when my alarm screamed at me. I could feel my legs pounding the pavement and my arms moving beside me. I could feel the rise and fall of my chest. I remember looking up and seeing nothing but blue sky. It came so easy, the movement and I could feel happiness. My smile. The bliss of blanking out and trusting your body to do the work. And then I woke and the moment was gone but it's stayed with me all day. // My body needed the rest when I walked into surgery 6 weeks ago. I had tried getting another run/workout streak going & was not going to mention what day it was till I got to a certain day. But my last run was on Wednesday. It’s was a good, solid 2 miles. Wednesday night a horrible headache hit & Thursday morning I ended up with fever & was officially victim #3 of the “something viral”. My hubby and I ran the @jeffgalloway13.1 Half Marathon this morning in downtown Atlanta.  Great course! And very well done race. Hubby stuck with me today and helped push me when I was ready to slow it down.  Ended at 2:01 (unofficial) not a Half PR for me but this is the best I've done on any course in hilly downtown Atlanta.  Super close to sub 2...next year we'll be back for this race! Great job to the @jeffgallowayolympian team and volunteers.  Well done and thanks for today! #runatl #motherrunner #sharethespark

Great morning so far! Drove over to Mt Dora, set up the Strong Finish Run Coaching booth for the post-race party, picked up packet and ran a mile warmup. Goal for today was a comfortable tempo pace about 7:30. Man, Mount Dora has some HILLS!!! Great training for Boston though. I felt good the whole way and I am glad my running fitness is headed back to where it was pre-injury. Nice surprise getting 1st place in my age group today also! Mamabear working on her comeback, y'all! Holla😎✌🏻❤️

one of the most frequently asked questions we get at The Running Lab and the answer is ‘it depends’.

It depends on current technique, injury history, volume of training, velocity of running, mobility at joints, strength and reactivity of muscles and tendons just for starters.

Although there is a large skill component to running often the runner will self organise their technique based on the resources that they currently possess often running in the most efficient way based on levels of mobility and strength.

This runner presented with a running economy value that was poor. He had a low stride frequency and a foot-strike position far in front of his centre of mass. These parameters led to an increased vertical displacement which increases his work against gravity. As a result his ground contact time was prolonged which impairs efficient storage of elastic energy.

To improve the runner explored options for improving economy. Standing taller, relaxing his knee joint and accelerating his foot and knee upwards after toe off decreasing the inertia of his swinging limb which improved his economy. A work in progress but highlights how changes can be made.

I came close to breaking my 11 year old marathon PR with a 3:17 at M2B 🏃🏽‍♀️ I ran an unofficial half PR with a 1:32 on a training run, but did PR in the half marathon during my full marathon with a 1:33:10. I can’t officially change it on my IG page though. I’m hoping to smash that time in 2018 so I can make it official. 😜 
I ran a course PR in Carlsbad and I claimed a 3rd place podium finish at the Red Rock Half! 😜 
I won my very first half marathon while running completely alone through the pouring rain at midnight 🕛 in an extraterrestrial 👽 area! 
I raced my first 30k trail race and placed 2nd on the podium. This is where I found my new love of trail running. 🌲🌿🐇🐍 Returning to the triathlon after quite some years for a sprint distance event was where I found myself standing on the podium in 🥈 second place. I sure do love that sport, but I’m not ready to commit to the training that’s involved. It was nice to know I could just jump back into it and still place without too much training though. If I ever have any aspirations to do a half ironman again, I will have to commit myself, however. It’s not an easy feat. 
Returning to my home state of NY after a 10 year absence was a dream come true as I ran the streets of all 5 boroughs in the NYC marathon. I was undertrained and 💯% prepared to run my first non competitive and enjoyable marathon, all while high fiving as many spectators as possible. Running my WORST time ever allowed me to have the BEST time ever. I highly recommend it. 😘😍 It’s officially “chubby time”. It’s the holidays and the end of the year. I’m relaxing and sleeping in and just spending mornings with my family. I know once January hits, I’ll be that strong willed and fierce competitive runner again, but for now, I hope you all enjoyed my 2017 recap and I wish you all a very happy holiday season with you families.

14 miles done ✅ Saturday for Phoenix Marathon Training! 🏃🏼‍♀️ Who else will be there? It’s such a fun race! I’ll be honest I rode the struggle bus 🚌 the second half of this run. It’s been an emotional week with the passing of my grandma and her funeral. I usually feel pretty great at this distance. 12-16 mile runs are some of my favorites, but today I just felt off. I still got it done and that felt good to finish when my body and mind said no. I do think these kind of training runs show us what were made of when it gets hard and life happens, rather then the ones that feel easy. Hope you are having a great weekend! These young ladies nailed their Christmas program this morning- it is so fun to have a front row seat of their every move. I feel beyond blessed to be on this wild ride called parenthood. While they sang solos and read smoothly, Haryson took cover between my legs, so for that, I am also thankful he didn’t choose to raise my dress in front of the congregation! 😂

LONG POST:
My last race of the year and my 21st half marathon. This was my PR race when I ran it last year and although I didn’t expect to PR this year, I expected to do well. 
I actually felt good the first half of the race, other than some earbud issues and a minor calf pain in my left leg at mile 7, I still expected to get close to my PR. I was planning on pushing thru my plantar fasciitis pain in case that flared up today... but shockingly, my foot was all good. 👍🏼 But something happened at around mile 9 that broke me down to tears by mile 12. I felt my right calf tightened around mile 9.5 and I figured I could stretch it out and changed my stride. Then these sudden spasms hit my right calf which traveled thru my entire leg in such a painful way that scared me. The only way I could describe it was as if a rock was inserted under my calf muscle and rolled to my hamstring then again to my calf then to my quad. I had to stop each time that happened coz it was soooo painful. I knew I could run fast or for very far. I was heartbroken and was mentally distraught. But I knew I had to finish the race... I didn’t drive 75 miles to not finish! So I decided to do quick intervals... run along 25 traffic cones and walk 5, run from one police officer to another, run 2 lamppost and walk one. 
It was awful and I was crying in pain at mile 12.5 but I knew the end was near and I just had to push thru. At the finish, my tears went away and all I felt was pride. I stuck with it. I didn’t give up. I felt more pain in those 3 miles that I ever did during my 2 marathons. And I still don’t know what it was which is very frustrating... 😥

Goal accomplished!  Today’s #halfmarathon was supposed to be a tempo long run for me. A little w/u and c/d and 13.1 at #gmp for the race. I felt good through the whole race and even kicked it up to 6:40 pace the last 0.15 miles to beat the 2 people right in front of me. So lucky to have several running friends out there today racing including this guy @ealbrecht10 who killed it of course. If given the choice between a plane ticket, fancy car, or a big house, I’d choose to travel every time ✈️ This morning I set out without a plan and ended up weaving in and out of charming streets lined with stone + brick buildings that date back to the 1700s, climbed up wicked high highs, avoided slipping down snow-covered trails, and did a couple of small circles in front of the house to finish with an even 6 miles. It’s been such a fun weekend, I’m not ready to fly back home tonight! #optoutside #adventure #travel #explore

Strategy Day 5: Don’t Starve Yourself Or Count Calories

Eating too little will not only make your running feel heavy and overtime can disturb your metabolism and hormones that regulate hunger (such as ghrelin and leptin) and send your body into starvation mode. Your body will start clinging to its fat stores, drawing energy from muscle and lean tissues. You’ll be losing the muscle mass that’s essential for keeping your body strong and workouts productive. Muscle mass boosts your metabolism, so over-restricting your calorie intake will actually impair your weight loss.

The opposite is true as well: when you fuel your body with what it needs, it works for you. You are satisfied, your metabolism is boosted, and you lose weight.

So instead of telling you to restrict what you eat and giving you a long list of foods to give up, I want you to start to identify what you are eating and start to choose real food instead. By “real food,” I mean unprocessed or minimally processed foods that either came from a plant or animal such as: vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, grains, meat, chicken, eggs and seafood. To simplify, these are foods that can be found in nature.

We have become so conditioned to count calories, but most of us have not been taught to also be aware of nutrients. As runners, the nutrient content is what matters. Another naptime stride workout in front of the house. The hardest part of this workout: getting down the driveway without falling😂Then 45 laps back and forth in front of the years to get 10min warm up, 2x10 20 sec strides with 40 seconds rest between then a 10 min cool down. My legs felt snappy, responsive and light today which is such a great feeling!! So thankful for the amazing weather we had last Sunday for our mommy and my half marathon - a stark contrast to the cold, wet, windy one we had this morning! It could have been the weather, or the festive fun we had last night, but I couldn't bring myself to face the elements outside this morning. Instead I had a 30 minute plyo HIIT sweat-fest in my living room and then hit the treadmill for a four mile speed sesh afterwards. Now I'm showered and fed and have no intentions of getting out of my PJs all day long! Happy Sunday friends!! ✨
So thankful for the amazing weather we had last Sunday for our mommy and my half marathon - a stark contrast to the cold, wet, windy one we had this morning! It could have been the weather, or the festive fun we had last night, but I couldn't bring myself to face the elements outside this morning. Ran based on feel rather than worrying about paces and ended up 4th overall female and with nearly a minute faster finish time than the half I tapered for & “raced” in October ➡️ Good sign that training is going well!!👌🏻So excited for the @chevronhoustonmarathon, 4 weeks to go!!
