Today was the 70th running of the 富士登山競走 - a race to the top of 富士山 -Mt Fuji from the 富士吉田 - Fujiyoshida city hall, where the traffic cones are painted like Mt Fuji
Though the run was up the tallest mountain in 日本-Japan, it felt less like a trail run and more like a road race. Most of the runners were wearing road shoes, with Asics probably the most popular. .
After the race was over, the Fifth Station was packed with runners, which must have been a surprise to the average hiker. The festival atmosphere continued at the base of the mountain. The ふじやま ビール - Fujiyama Beer really hit the spot!
As a first-time entrant, I was in the race to 五合目 - the Fifth Station. Luckily the conditions were right and I made the cut to compete next year for the summit. For finishing, I received 750g of local ミルキークイーン - Milky Queen rice. A very nice lady also gave us a couple tomatoes. .
This morning I woke up at 2:00am to see the sunrise.
This wasn't just any sunrise though. This was from the summit of Mt. Fuji. It took us just over 24 hours from leaving our accommodation to finishing the descent this morning and although it was one of the hardest things I've put my body through, it was also one of the most rewarding.
