This summer our #Invertebrate#Zoology staff travelled to the rural property of Tyler Cobb (RAM Head of Life Sciences) to collect a Carpenter ant Camponotus sp. colony from a fallen tree. Using a chainsaw, insect vacuum, keen eyes and dozens of vials they managed to capture several hundred ants. More importantly, despite liberal use of a chainsaw, the queen was also captured unharmed. Quite a feat considering that there are thousands of ants in a colony this size.
The colony was transported safely back to the RAM where it now is thriving in captivity. Future visitors to the new downtown RAM will be treated to seeing this colony on display in the new Bug Room when we open in 2018. #YEG#Yegdt#Alberta#MuseumWork#BTS
Members of our children's learning team recently visited the Vanderwell mill in #SlaveLake , #Alberta to find the best "tree cookies" for the new museum's learning programs and various exhibits. Tree cookies are cross sections of tree trunks that can be used to study the growth of a tree. As trees grow, they add growth rings every year, which can be seen as a layer of light and dark wood. #RoyalAlbertaMuseum#Opening2018#Yeg#yegdt#MuseumWork
Here’s what the museum team is working on today. We’re photographing artifacts for our next online exhibit “America.” This is an Order of the Cincinnati issued to Henry Chapman and is signed by George Washington. The Order was a group formed for Revolutionary War veterans to stay connected and is still around today!

"This whitewashed chest was one of three found in Hatnofer's tomb. Two of the chests, including this one, were probably made especially for his burial. They were filled with linen sheets of various qualities and weaves. Shown here with the chest are a shirt of fine linen; a sheet of superfine weave, probably used as an outer garment; and a sheet of coarser weave more than seventeen yards long, which may have served as a mattress. After it was packed with linen, the chest was tied shut with a piece of linen cord that was secured with a mud seal.
Inside the box were 30 linen sheets. The majority of which had been used before being buried in Hatnofer's tomb. All of the sheets had been cleaned and all but one were folded into small bundles and carefully packed into the box. Many had ink inscriptions of the treasury, indicating that they came from the royal storerooms.
Excavated by the Egyptian Expedition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1935–1936. Acquired by the Museum in the division of finds, 1936."
These amazing artifacts are on display in Gallery 116 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

Bartels intern Kaila Temple finds herself spending time with some interesting, if silent, friends during the month of August! Kaila is repainting some of Historic Deerfield's 18th-century shaped mannequins which were made for the museum in the mid-late 20th century by Long Island City manufacturer Mary Brosnan. Once finished, these mannequins will wear some of the exquisite 18th century fashions in the museum's collection. #museumwork#historicdeerfield
As a little girl I always enjoyed writing. I never knew how much I loved writing and that my talent was in my writing until later on in life. On last week, during a presentation on Museum Activism, I shared that my pen is my weapon. My God given talent of writing is my way of contributing to the change I desire to see in museums. It is the way I express my burning passion for African American museums. I utilize my pen as a weapon to bring awareness and exposure to institutions that otherwise may or may be noticed. My purpose behind putting my weapon to paper is for people to visit, support, donate and help sustain these institutions for generations to come. This is my vision. This is my dream. This is my legacy. This is my passion. #IAmTheAfricanAmericanMuseumActivist#LegacyChaser#PassionPursuer#ThereIsWorkToBeDone#CannotStop#WillNotStop#HeritageSalon#MuseumWork#LeavingALegacy#JadaWrightGreene
In the early hours of the morning, museum staff is seen adjusting the thirty-five star 1860s garrison flag on display. Collections care is a critical part of museum business. Museum staff members keep careful watch over artifacts and specimens on display and routinely carry out preventive conservation measures to ensure the longevity of our historical artifacts. #Museum#MuseumWork#CollectionsManagement#MedicalMuseum#MilitaryMedicine#GarrisonFlag#NMHM
