One more diploma left! @simonxsludge's December Vinyl Challenge - December 30th: Your Album of the Year. Converge - The Dusk in Us, Indie Record Store Exclusive Blue, 1000 copies. // Took a lot of thinking and listening to come to this conclusion...2017 was a pretty rough year for many things, including the music world, with many artists passing away, like Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, and Malcolm Young. But 2017 also produced a massive wave of exceptional releases, which made this arguably the toughest post of this challenge. I only discovered Converge in that past six or so months, buying their 2011 release 'Axe to Fall' on brown vinyl at a record fair; a record finding itself on my turntable consistently ever since! Until The Dusk in Us, Axe to Fall was my favourite Converge album, even beating out the calculated chaos and ferocity of 'Jane Doe'...but The Dusk in Us shows Converge doing what they do best: kicking themselves up a notch in every way. I don't have many friends who listen to metal, or hardcore punk, and arguably Converge merges the most abrasive aspects of both, so trying to explain why I love Converge to them...it's not what you could describe as "painless dentistry", to quote Paddy Nolan. I like music that pushes me. And Converge has always done that, with every album I've listened to, with The Dusk in Us doing it the most, and then delivering. I reach a thresh-hold where eventually the way the album plays out just...clicks. Everything in it makes sense, it meshes. The Dusk in Us flawlessly meshes Converge's standard hardcore insanity, skull-bludgeoning-ly heavy metallic riffs, and a melodic sense that is awe-inspiringly beautiful. This album was almost my soundtrack for how I view 2017, with its tracks that sound like sonic-scorched-earth, and then others that make you want to shed more than just a single tear, like the crown jewel that is the title track. - Stephen
