My journey started today at precisely 13:33 when I left the house in Oxted with Pepe (my backpack) settled firmly on my shoulders. I made my way to the station and boarded a 7000 horse-powered beast heading for London.
Arriving at London Bridge within 33 minutes I set off on shanks pony to visit Southwark Cathedral where I would collect my Pilgrim's Passport and view the Chaucer window. I obtained my 1st pilgrim's stamp 😀 and bought a small booklet featuring Chaucer's story; The Wife of Bath 😉 who was one of the pilgrims featured in The Canterbury Tales. On the way I walked through Borough Market and passed The Sentinel before stopping to look at London Bridge and the Thames; "There are two things scarce matched in the Universe The Sun in Heaven and The Thames on Earth". Then once again using shanks pony I walked along the banks of the River Thames to my weekend lodging stopping briefly to see another favourite sculpture; The Navigators - seemed apt since I'll be navigating my route to Canterbury.
After a few hours of sleep I walked back along the river upstream to Bermondsey beach to watch the sunset. From there, heading back downstream to Thameside, the intention was to have supper at The Mayflower Pub but it was so full and too noisy, so instead I returned to the hostel passing one of my favourite London sculptures; The Sunbeam weekly and the Pilgrim's Pocket. In all a brilliant start to my #SouthwarktoCanterbury walk #inthefootstepsofChaucer
Distance walked 8.70 kms / 5.44 miles. 16,823 steps. Temperature: wayyy too hot!!! 🌞🌞🌞🌡 #mapmywalk#walk1000miles#traveldiaries#Southwark#London#SouthwarkCathedral#GeoffreyChaucer#RiverThames#Sunset#londonsculptures#LoveLondon#CindysTravels#walking#ospreypacks#Tempest40#MysticMagenta
Okayyy!!! LOL we; me, my backpack and walking poles have stopped for a rest 😂😂 So, prognosis so far...I decided to just get on with it and use the blessed poles properly 😱🤔🤔 Following the youtube instructors instructions 😉 I set them up before I hit the hill....to my absolute amazement I climbed the first section without breaking stride. Now, either I have become extra fit overnight, or the poles have really made a difference!! The left pole keeps going off piste, so to speak, but the right one is working like a charm. One small problem is that me left wrist is feeling iffy 🤕...so we shall see 😁 onward...... #Camino2017#practicewalk#NordicPoles#walkingpoles#walk1000miles#traveldiaries#ospreypacks#MysticMagenta
I had such an amazing walk up and around and down Titsey Hill yesterday; clocking up mileage to finish off June and the 1st half of the year. Total to date 658 boots on miles since 01/01/17. 😁😁 Yesterday's walk was 13.30 kms (8.31 miles), 17,745 steps and 288 meters elevation with the Osprey now weighing in at 6.35kgs. The weather stm is perfect for walking. I managed to clamber about some new paths that ultimately led into thickets and had me scrambling about almost on my knees with the backpack getting tangled amongst the branches. But loads of fun. Mind you, I could certainly feel my toes and joints after that!!! It's amazing the impact the extra weight of the backpack has on my physiology. #walk1000miles#walking#TitseyHill#NorthDowns#SurreyHills#Camino2017#practicewalk#Ospreypacks#MysticMagenta#exploreEngland#traveldiaries#travelphotography
With just 73 days to go till I start walking the Camino I'm now getting impatient, I feel ready, both mentally and physically.
I've no doubt that once I start I'll be tested like never before, regardless of how ready I feel...is anyone ever 100% ready? I've walked 657 boots on miles since 01/01/17 and with my upcoming 60+ mile walk from Southwark Cathedral to Canterbury Cathedral in just over a week's time, I'm guessing I'll be finding out just what it's like to walk for 6-8 hours a day for 4 days in a row with a fully loaded backpack. I'm really grateful for this opportunity as it will give me a peek into what to expect for September. It'll also give me an idea of how my feet cope and whether or not I need to consider new shoes. I've bought a good supply of the FLP MSM with glucosamine & chondroitin drink which I'll be quaffing in substantial quantities from next week till I leave for Portugal as well as their amazing Heat Lotion that works absolute wonders on my achy feet. Here's to my #Camino2017 as the days race by!!! 👏👏👏💃💃💃👣👣👣 I took this photo on my birthday in San Gimignano. Can't believe that was over 2 months ago!!! 💖💖 #SanGimignano#Italy#walk1000miles#caminoportuguese#PortugueseCoastalRoute#SantiagodeCompostela#SouthwarktoCanterbury#inthefootstepsofChaucer#practicewalk#pilgrimsway#traveldiaries#ospreypacks#MysticMagenta
So today I plucked up the courage for take 2 of the backpack testing ... Listening to my body, I rested the last 2 days and felt able enough to tackle another walk with the 5.5 kgs on my back. All went really well, although I didn't use the hip straps...they're really short and clearly a major design flaw...not every walking lady is a svelte slender model....some of us have history 😂😎 although I've been made to understand the kgs will fall off after a few days... 🤣🤣😂 I had a fab walk through beautiful green woodlands, got in 4.63 kms (2.89 miles) without any issues beyond my knees grumbling a bit and my lower lumbar region taking a bit of flak...the lower edge of the backpack rests right against my spine dedpite my adjusting the back length. So something needs to be done about that. But, what I noticed is that the straps don't cut into my arms as I walk, while every other backpack I've tested has left me with skin abrasions. Progress. I'll continue with just 5.5 kgs till end of June and then up it to 6.5kgs for July and 7.5 for August. After that it'll be baby you're just gonna have to cope 😁👣👣👣👣😎 #walking#Camino2017#practicewalk#walk1000miles#Osprey#ospreypacks#Tempest40#MysticMagenta#woodlands#trees 🌳 #beautifulday#summer#England
