One of the 6 animals featured in our native New Zealand animal memory game is the Hector's Dolphin. Did you know that the Maui dolphin is a subspecies of the Hector's? And did you also know that there are less than 100 of them remaining? It saddens me to see such amazing animals on the brink of extinction, and all due to human activity 🐬

January 23rd, 1870. Due to high tensions between the Black Foot Confederacy & European Settlers in the Montana Territory, the United States Army kills over 200 Piegan Blackfeet women, children, and elderly men, near Maria’s River, Montana; in retaliation of the Blackfeet harboring a Piegan warrior who was wanted for murdering a white trader, Malcolm Clarke.
The killing of Clarke was to settle the revenge of the warrior, Owl Child, when Clarke had beaten and humiliated Owl Child in front of other Blackfeet Indians, and supposedly raped Owl Child’s wife, and impregnated her.
In August of 1869, Owl Child and his entourage had tracked down Clarke to his ranch and shot him. The killing had created a panic within the region, with demands from settlers to request for protection by the United States against the Blackfeet Confederacy.
The US army had placed a bounty for Owl Child, who had taken refuge with a Piegan band, lead by Mountain Chief.
The Second Calvary Regiment where deployed in search of Owl Child, under leadership of Major Eugene Baker.
The US belligerency had made their way to Mountain Chiefs camp, and in a defiance of orders, Baker gave commands to fire on the entire camp.
A scout had attempted to warn the camp of the attack, but was arrested in a commotion.
Mountain Chief had noticed the in fighting taking place, and he came to the soldiers, unarmed, with only a good conduct paper that the Indian Bureau had given him to keep his band protected from the US government.
The Chief was killed on sight, with the US military firing on the encampment where mainly unarmed women and children had slept, killing about 100 of the 230 people.
The remaining 100 survivors where taken prisoner, but where eventually released when the soldiers discovered the prisoners had small pox.
With no food, water, or medicinal supplies, the refugees where released into the cold January weather, where many froze to death.
This event is remembered as the “Baker Massacre.”
