We stand with our Indigenous sisters and brothers. Today, and every day. The #NativeNationsMarch on Washington begins at 10am at the Army Corps of Engineers HQ, 443 G St NW. Rally starts at 12pm at Lafayette Square. #WaterIsLife #IndigenousWomenRising #NativeNationsRise #StandWithStandingRock (📷: @a_dc_diary)
Got to meet Ethan Hawke at the #NativeNationsRise March in DC. The brother was mad chill and supportive. He was rolling with the homie @martinsensmeier. It was amazing to see Ethan march with us and not ask to speak or be all public about his presence during the event. Solid allyship.

Threatened by the Keystone XL Pipeline, Dakota Access Pipeline, Bayou Bridge Pipeline and so much more, the fight for Indigenous rights is more important than ever. Join hundreds of native peoples as they fight for climate justice at the #ClimateMarch on 4/29 in DC. #Regram #RG @indigenousrising:
Earlier this month thousands of Indigenous Peoples gathered in D.C. for #NativeNationsRise to honor the beautiful resistance that took place in #StandingRock and to send a clear message to the world that despite the camps being closed, our unity is stronger than ever and our fight for Indigenous Rights across Turtle Island is growing from coast to coast and across borders.
On April 29th we have another opportunity to resist. We lead the People's Climate March in Washington D.C. and proclaim that Indigenous Rights equal climate justice.
We look forward to standing with relatives from all four directions.

Indigenizing the Environmental Discourse: Inspiring our Future Environmental and Social Activists
By Jessica Hernandez (Zapotec & Ch’orti’), MS, MMA

Seek wisdom, not knowledge. Knowledge is of the past, Wisdom is of the future. — Lumbee

My goal is to continue seeking wisdom and not knowledge. In STEM we base most of our understanding of our natural world from knowledge and sometimes neglect the wisdom from our ancestors that we carry within. Our ancestors managed their environment with few negative environmental impacts, and as an environmental scientist I want to teach and mentor our future environmental scientists and engineers. Not only for them to become great in research, but also to become strong environmental and social advocates for our communities. We have been silenced for years and in order to allow our communities to speak, we must utilize our academic platforms to give them a voice.  @uofwa

SACNISTA Jessica Hernandez (Zapotec & Ch’orti’) bridges the gap between traditional knowledge and western academia. "[My father] ensured that I grew up understanding that our stories are grounded on Mother Earth, and as a result it is “herstory” that we focus on and not history." As scientists and engineers, we can utilize our technical academic background to be the loudest advocates for our communities and this is what I emphasize inside and outside of my classroom. STEM should move towards bridging the division between the social and technical sciences if we really want to implement change — especially in the current geopolitical climate of our country. Our communities of color are the most affected and with the new direction of supporting coal, oil, and other extractive resources, our communities will face more environmental injustices. Even though environmental injustices have been experienced for years by our communities, there will be an immense increase. This is why it is important now, more than ever, to indigenize the environmental discourse and environmental justice. @uofwa

"#SACNAS2017 was a unique conference experience for me. In every other meeting that I attend I am one of the very few black people around. Even as I am in my second decade of regularly attending scientific conferences, the uneasy feeling that I get for being one of few members of underrepresented minority groups never goes away. Unfortunately, the settings and sometimes attendees also keep reminding you that you are different than most people. But, at #SACNAS I was overjoyed, and even got emotional multiple times. The feeling of being surrounded by so many people that look like me in one meeting is still hard to put in words. One of the most incredible experiences for me was attending the POW WOW. Witnessing the joy and pride attendees were feeling by being able to bring our whole selves to celebrate and showcase our science was glorious. The support and mentoring that early career scientists from URM groups were receiving throughout the meeting was also incredible. Thank you for the experience." #BLACKandSTEM

Seeing #melanin is not permission to kill. #NativeAmericans are too often ignored. FYI, #JasonPero, a child, was home sick at his grandparents' home. All he had on his was his cell phone before being shot in front of his home.

There was a time in the not-so-distant past when young native children were ripped away from their families and forced to attend boarding schools with the purpose of disenfranchising them from their culture. It wasn't even until the Freedom of Religion Act in the 70s that Native American people could even have the freedom to practice their spirituality. •
But today is a new day. And yesterday was #nativenationsrise, where over 5,000 Native Nations and allies marched direct to the capital to stand up for their rights, for the protection of #motherearth, and for #consentnotconsultation for environmentally devastating projects like #dapl and #kxl.

A city created from the trading of indigenous groups, Huehuetenango feels a bit like trying describe a dream forgotten until something triggered its memory. With its own cognitive ecosystem that feels apart from waking life, but makes perfect sense when it's own liminal space. A city, formed from the indigenous communities that surround it, themselves descended from the Mayan nation states shattered centuries ago. Each one holding pieces of spectral colour from light shone through prisms of time and often painful legacies. Here living mosaic reforming and swirling in a pool of technicolor life, that while sitting in the shadows of colonisation rather than stepped pyramids, are still essentially themselves, serving as reminder of a lost thread deep in each of us. #thehumanlandscape
A city created from the trading of indigenous groups, Huehuetenango feels a bit like trying describe a dream forgotten until something triggered its memory. With its own cognitive ecosystem that feels apart from waking life, but makes perfect sense when it's own liminal space. I've had a DAPL security sniper aiming at my face at Standing Rock, and I will never, ever, dress up as Pocahontas or sport a fake-ass costume war bonnet. Please have some respect - they're still here, and face struggles that most will never comprehend during their lifetime. The survivors of the genocide deserve respect and honor, not ignorant typecasting and mockery. Cool? Cheers. ✨🙌🏼✨ #Repost @ali_kat_dietz (@get_repost)

Halloween is coming, don't be that person perpetuating stereotypes while ignoring the struggle... - Actually, even if you're completely aware of the struggle just DONT freaking dress up and mock an entire race of people this year! ♡ #thisisnotacostume #nativenationsrise #americanindian
