Did you know...? If you smile, even if you're in a bad mood, it will immediately improve your mood, because the simple act of thinking about smiling and using the muscles is enough to trigger happy chemicals in the brain!

“A Deep Dive Into the Brain, Hand-Drawn by the Father of Neuroscience”: The breakthrough drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal are undeniable as art.⠀
According to the New York Times: “It’s not often that you look at an exhibition with the help of the very apparatus that is its subject. But so it is with “The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramón y Cajal” at the Grey Art Gallery at New York University, one of the most unusual, ravishing exhibitions of the season.”⠀
Cajal is considered the father of modern neuroscience.⠀
If you are in NYC, this seems to be a must-see exhibition!⠀

HI everyone! I have chosen to create @thescicommunity as a second account for everyone interested in scicomm and the fields of STEM. I want it to work as a way to bring all of us together. Every now and then, I'll post about some of my current research on here, but this account is for all of you. I want this page to be a hub for communicating current topics and research related to the fields of science. There will be multiple admins on this page and as long as your post idea meets guidelines (work friendly and science-centered), it will eventually be posted here. I want this page to work as an easy way to find the vast scicomm instagram accounts that are working everyday to promote the sciences. My goal is for this page to become a networking page for researchers, students, doctors, scientists, and science enthusiasts alike. In the upcoming weeks, access will be given to those with already established sciences pages who would like to post about a topic of their choice and we'll go from there!
This page will always be evolving and changing to suit your recommendations and opinions. I've only tagged a few accounts in this initial post to get things rolling, but if you know of an account that would be interested in joining, please tag them! If you'd like to get involved, please follow us and say hello! Let's make 2018 the year of science and have some fun with this! 😃🔬💫⚗️🔭
I believe we create our own lives. And we create it by our thinking, feeling patterns in our belief system. I think we're all born with this huge canvas in front of us and the paintbrushes and the paint, and we choose what to put on this canvas.
-Louise L. Hay
Many of us if we’ve honest have played out this conversation in our minds at some point right? but why do we have these beliefs that lead to an overload of stress. More importantly are you aware of the chemical impact on the brain + nervous system which influence your behaviour. This is A HUGE topic one l can only scratch the surface really in a 2 hour offering of movement, philosophy, psychology and neuroscience @triyogauk Sunday 28th January 4.30-6.30pm. So if you’re already struggling with managing your stress then join me for an interactive afternoon of exploration for mental and physical well being. #stress#anxiety#philosophy#psychology#neuroscience#coachinglife
Neurons, while shaped differently and have unique characteristics, are just like any other cell in the body. It has a nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria and many other organelles
Specifically in the cytoplasm (located in the axon called axoplasm), transport occurs as like any other cell. There is slow and fast axonal transport. During fast axonal transport, it is further broken down to anterograde (away from cell body) and retrograde (toward the cell body) -
Viruses actually use RAT (retrograde) to travel up into the spinal cord to take their effects. Viruses that are known for this is depicted in the picture shown here.
We think of our brains as constantly going and as powerful beyond our understanding and that is true. Paradoxically, our brains can also be “lazy” and find ways to use less energy. We don’t think this will come as a surprise considering how many people just seem to be going through the motions, but the brain actually doesn’t spend a lot of time actively thinking unless it’s forced to. How can we tap into more of our brain’s capacity and force active, creative thinking? By introducing constraints - whether it’s of time or space or resources. Creativity benefits from constraints and rather than being limiting often inspire new ways of looking at a problem or finding a solution that wouldn’t have been accessible without some obstacle to overcome. When we have less to work with, we’re forced to look at things differently and literally attract and dedicate more mental energy to the task at hand. So next time you come across a perceived barrier, remember it’s just paving the way to access your higher thinking and greatness.

"What has driven this idea, to have all these services under one roof, is to clearly be able to bring it together and to prevent fragmentation of care. When you start peeling the onion and understanding what physical activity does in combination with medication treatment it becomes more of a synergistic effect."-- Francisco Navarro, MD

I've decided to stop nursing because I desperately want and need to start taking my Narcolepsy medication again. My quality of life without it is so poor and I feel incapable of truly providing the care my family needs of me and I require of myself. I wanted to share the most frustrating symptoms that I deal with every day in case any one of you may experience them so that you may seek help from a neurologist. Less than 1% of the population has been diagnosed with Narcolepsy and they say the average amount of time, from the onset of symptoms to the time of diagnosis, is TEN FRICKING YEARS and that is just so sad and crazy. I'd always thought that everyone else around me was always as tired as I was because everyone complains about sleepiness but I was so very wrong - maybe your daily fatigue is actually a sign of something much worse. If you find yourself struggling to stay awake or feeling extremely tired and foggy brained on a regular basis, PLEASE read through these! #narcolepsy#cataplexy#neuroscience#invisibledisability#excessivedaytimesleepiness
Dante’s Divine Comedy begins with a narrator who has lost his way on the journey of life, and offers a revelation on human struggle and emotion. Nicole Krauss’s latest novel, Forest Dark, inspired by this work, takes readers through these themes and out the other side. On 2/24, as a part of our Brainwave series, Krauss meets with neuroscientist Daphna Shohamy to discuss how memory, experience, and trauma help reveal our future self.
¡Otra meta lograda!
I dont know why I’m doing this, but lets keep going!

Join us this summer for the Neuroscience Institute! Neuroscience is an exciting and rapidly growing interdisciplinary field encompassing the study of the nervous system and its role in regulating behavior. Students will examine the structure of the brain through hands-on dissection. Learn how sensory systems detect stimuli in the environment and how drugs affect the brain. Also, they will visit active neuroscience labs as well as conduct exciting neuroscience experiments. #WFUSIP#neuroscience#precollege#summerimmersion
Cellular Life Support
On the way to reaching the affected part, when patients undergo surgery to treat brain tumours and epilepsy, surgeons often remove a small amount of other brain tissue. This is normally discarded as waste, but in a recent study it was collected and kept on ‘life support’ in the lab. Living tissue removed from the brains of 36 patients was maintained outside of the brain for several days. This allowed researchers to analyse the nerve cells within brain tissue and to create 3D reconstructions of the cells’ activity. Using microscopes, they studied the intricate shapes and branches of each cell. They also applied electricity to the cells to learn more about how nerves in a healthy brain communicate with each other by sending and receiving electrical signals. The findings are published in a database, which is publicly available and free to use.

Our nervous system ✨ since delving into my Neuromuscular course, I've been amazed at what I've learnt about the body 🤗 (warning nerd alert 🚨🤓) We have our sympathetic nervous system which is most dominant during stressful situations 😰 and our parasympathetic nervous system which is most dominant in calming situations 💆🏽😊When our body is in our parasympathetic mode, the other body's systems work more efficiently such as our digestive system. So that got me thinking about exercise 🤔 For a lot of us we spend the whole day stressed in work and then run out of work trying to make it to a high intensity class and wonder why we're not losing weight or still have a bloated gut 🙈 It's probably because we're spending the whole day in our sympathetic nervous system and not giving our poor body's time in our parasympathetic nervous system. 🤔 It's important to have a balance between both. Our sympathetic nervous system helps us in dangerous situations like slamming your foot on the break to avoid a collision 💥 and our parasympathetic system helps us to be less reactive and sleep better which in turn allows our digestive system to work to its optimum 😄 try ask yourself is your workout routine working for your current mental state? If not, maybe try change it up. Food for thought 💕 .
