Part one. November 19, 2017. Valerie Seeley in the Egyptian Wing of the Met. Valerie is on her ninth month as a free woman after spending 17 years in prison (on a 19 to life sentence) for second degree murder. Seeley took the life of her abusive partner during an altercation. She was granted clemency by Gov Cuomo on New Years Day 2016.
Valerie, a born and raised New Yorker originally from Harlem, had never been to The Met. "It was a real fabolous experience and I loved the exhibits. It's been years since I went to a museum and I'd like to do that again. Walking through Central Park was really wonderful too, it was like I was coming from a different country seeing everything again. I was stripped of everything when I got locked up. It's like everything is brand new to me." #newyorker#met#metmuseum#egypt#valerie#seeley#clemency#cuomo#nyc#centralpark#freedom
Mentor Monday: Dondi White. Most of you know the artist and the legend. To me Dondi was my big brother( once he accepted his place in the friend zone). Nevertheless, when I first moved to the City, he took me under his wing. Secretly I think he was bizarrely fascinated as to why @beeandbones and I weren't trying to hook up with him or Ricky Powell..lol. But who knew a diss could turn into an amazing friendship. I will always fondly remember those trips to Balduccis, homemade Italians dinners listening to him wax poetic about the Old Days.(I always told you to keep a memoir cause the tradition of oral history was a dying art.) I remember when you introduced to Graf Legends like TC5 Crew and countless other legendary crews. And I can't forget that I'll-fated night when you tried to take me bombing but I'm afraid of rats so that didn't work so well...lol. I cannot thank you enough for putting on your cape and coming to Clinton Hill to save me. I appreciate all those times we hung out at your crib in Greenpoint (way before it was cool) watching movies and our personal favorite classic shows TwilightZone and The Honeymooners. People don't know how much you were into cycling and how you taught me how to fix my own bike and we'd often ride throughout the City. I remember the countless canvases scattered throughout your place and know I will never sell the one you gave me. But trust I still am mad that you refused to gift me one of those Futura canvases you had just laying around- At least I would have hung them and shown them proper respect ...lol. It's been almost 20 years since you left us but Man I really do miss you and although our time was brief it was invaluable. #dondiwhite#friend#bigbrother#icon#artist#graffitilegend#newyorker#excellentcook#storyteller#bluebriefunderwearownerlol#thankyou#missyou#friendsbeforethissocialmediaahit
