Finished Relational Aesthetics, Nicolas Bourriaud's manifesto (?) on the art of the 1990s. Broad claims about contemporary art which aren't always very unexpected or substantiated – Bourriaud often just names an artist and the titles of a few works and expects readers to make the connections. Also, the translation and editing of this English edition is so horrendous that it really impeded my attempts to make sense of Bourriaud's ideas (it felt at points as if the translators used Google Translate). I'm not sure why I finished reading this work, to be honest. I picked up Bourriaud mostly because Ashraf Jamal, a thinker who's important for my own work, cites him – although his later work, like Postproduction – quite a lot. Artists and art theory peeps out there, is it worth reading Bourriaud's other works? ★★☆☆☆

有意義な時間でした。
しかし芸大生ってみんなオシャレすね!

#FGMiCA – Relational Aesthetics.

Relational Aesthetics refers to interactive or multi-sensory installations art that emphasizes the possibility of social exchange within them. It was coined by Nicolas Bourriaud in 1996, in the catalogue for the exhibition Traffic he curated at CAPC musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux.

Bourriaud described it as "a set of artistic practices which take as their theoretical and practical point of departure the whole of human relations and their social context, rather than an independent and private space". To achieve this, he imports the language of the 1990s internet boom, using terminology such as user-friendliness, interactivity and DIY.

The goal of most Relational Aesthetics art is to create a social circumstance; the viewer experience of the constructed social environment becomes the art. The task of the artist is to become a conduit for this social experience. To do so, artists often create a physical space to be used for a particular (often ephemeral) social event: a communal meal, a discussion or even just sitting around.

Relational Aesthetics projects tend to break with the traditional physical and social space of the art gallery and the artist studio. Its subject is the entirety of life as it is lived, or the dynamic social environment, rather than attempting mimetic representation of object removed from daily life.

Difficult for some to digest, Relational Aesthetics is still evocative of the 1990s; the birth of internet culture, instant communication, and the instantaneous gain and loss of celebrity, sans the same cynicism we’ve developed today.
