How much snow it typically takes to cancel a school in USA (2014)
1. The lightest green says "any snow" but also includes merely the prediction of snow. Also, this is snow accumulation over 24 hours/overnight.
2. In much of the Midwest and Great Plains, school closing often depends more on wind chill and temperature than on snow accumulation ("cold days"). Thus, this map may be misleading in those areas.
3. Many jurisdictions in California and other western states have significantly varied snowfall, depending on elevation. This makes it difficult to find an "average" number, or often makes it misleading.
4. Urban areas like Chicago and New York have more resources to clear snow and often need more to cause closings.
5. To everyone saying "I grew up in so-and-so and we never closed school," policies have changed in the last 20 years to make closing a much more common occurrence. Just because schools stayed open back then doesn't mean they do these days.
6. Hawaii does get snow! Just... not where people live.
7. Data was taken from hundreds of various points from user responses and interpolated using NOAA's average annual snowfall days map.

For years, there have been investigations by scientists into what causes certain “humming” or “ringing” that can be heard, felt, or measured in various parts of the world. Often barely perceptible, such humming noises have become popularly associated with a number of locations, such as the town of #Taos , #NewMexico . The cause of these sounds, however, remains a matter of dispute by scientists.
Additionally, their mysterious nature has led to a number of imaginative theories about their origin, which range from ideas about clandestine underground bases to secret drilling operations carried out by world governments. There are, however, more likely explanations for the varieties of strange sounds that are reported, which have more to do with little-understood natural phenomena.
With the onset of the winter months in #NorthAmerica (and hence, the arrival of “#MysteryBoom ” season), there has been some discussion of Earth’s mysterious humming as of late. For instance, a recent item in Central #Oregon ’s The Bulletin reported on the phenomenon, under the headline, “Scientists unlocking mystery of the hum of Earth.” According to the Bulletin article: “The Earth is ringing like a bell all the time,” said Spahr Webb, a seismologist at #ColumbiaUniversity .
The hum is everywhere. Its ultralow frequencies have been recorded in #Antarctica and #Algeria , and — as announced this week by the American Geophysical Union — on the floor of the #IndianOcean .
We don’t know what causes it. Some have theorized that it’s the echo of colliding ocean waves, or the movements of the atmosphere, or vibrations born of sea and sky alike. 🖐🏾More in comments👇🏾
So chilly in #chattanooga but still absolutely beautiful! Thanks @alexisdimmer_ 👍🏽
"What's your name?", he asked. "My name is Wind", she whispered. "And rain. And dust and sunshine." She was free and silly and young and alive, on the most beautiful night in August. "I have no name. I am whoever the keepers of my fate tell me to be." He smiled and grabbed her by her wrist as she walked away..."Let me call you mine..." >>>#hehasbeencallingherhissince#shesalwayswalkingaway#summerstoriesinwinter#northamerica
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is said to be the most visited Catholic site in the world, surpassing the Vatican. It is particularly very crowded every 12th of December, the feast of the Guadalupe.
The complex has both the old and new basilica. The new basilica (left) was built between 1974 to 1976. The old basilica (right), completed in 1709, is still open to the public. The new basilica had to be built because the old one is considered dangerous due to the sinking ground on which it is built upon. This is the reason why the old basilica is tilted. 🇲🇽⛪️ #virgendeguadalupe#ciudaddeméxico#cdmx#mexicocity#mexico
#CountryoftheDay is Canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 suggested by @jsimo2002 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Population 34.7 million (UN, 2012)
Area 9.98 million sq km (3.85 million sq miles)
Major languages English, French (both official)
Major religion Christianity
Life expectancy 79 years (men), 83 years (women) (UN)
Currency Canadian dollar
The world's second largest country by surface but relatively small in terms of population, Canada punches above its weight in economic terms.
A federation of former British colonies, Canada follows the British pattern of parliamentary democracy, and the UK monarch is head of state. Ties with the US are now vital, especially in terms of trade, but Canada often goes its own way.
Both English and French enjoy official status, and mainly French-speaking Quebec - where pressure for full sovereignty has abated in recent years - has wide-ranging cultural autonomy. Indigenous peoples make up around 4% of the population.
Canada is one of world's top trading nations - and one of its richest. Alongside a dominant service sector, Canada also has vast oil reserves and is a major exporter of energy, food and minerals.
Justin Trudeau - son of Pierre Trudeau, who dominated Canadian politics in the 1970s - won a resounding election victory for his Liberal Party in October 2015, ending the nine years of Conservative government under Stephen Harper.
After a closely fought three-way contest with the Conservatives and centre-left New Democrats, the Liberals leapt from the humiliating third place they won at the 2011 election to gain a surprise overall majority in parliament.
Mr Trudeau campaigned on promises to shift some of the tax burden from middle-income earners to the richest Canadians, and run a budget deficit to allow spending on infrastructure and boosting growth. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
