6 years ago today I packed my car and drove from Oklahoma to North Carolina. I was 21 and my dad had died a month earlier. I had completely lost my mind and had to run away from everything. I emailed a random family farm that I found online and asked if I could work for room and board, and a few days later I was on the road. I remember every second of that experience. I remember the fear I had driving up their long driveway for the first time, the isolation of having no phone or computer to talk to friends or family, the heavy grief I was dealing with. I remember Lionel, the grandfather, telling stories of how he partied with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Janis Joplin, the apple and almond butter sandwiches, canning beans and gossiping with Courtney, watching her son run around the farm barefoot in a diaper with blueberry stained fingers, learning and learning and working and working and feeling so fulfilled and as though I had purpose. I remember it all.

Clematis virginiana (virgin's bower) near our Perennial Border, not to be confused with Clematis terniflora (sweet autumn clematis), an ornamental introduced from Asia that has been reported as invasive in many southeastern U.S. states. (If you're looking to tell them apart, the native Clematis virginiana has jagged, toothed leaves, whereas the introduced Clematis terniflora has smooth, entire leaf edges.)
