Day 21: A Therapist
I think Carl Rogers makes sense. His influence in the middle of last century was huge. He encouraged therapists to move away from sitting in a chair as an expert handing out advice. Carl Rogers believed that therapists need to create a growth-promoting climate where individuals can move forward and become capable of becoming their true self. I love this idea ❤️
As a client centred counsellor I focus on the 3 keys...
(1) congruence (genuineness or realness),
(2) unconditional positive regard (acceptance and caring), and *
(3) accurate empathic understanding (an ability to deeply grasp the subjective world of another person)
Day 20: Feelings
I post this lovely poem by @nayyariah.waheed as I just received my copy of "Salt" in my mailbox - so good: almost eating the words off the pages 😊
Expressing, naming, and being aware of feelings is a big part of the counselling / psychotherapy conversation. Careful reflective listening helps clients feel understood, I will listen with my own body, notice what I am feeling and use a wide range of feeling words to reflect back to my client: often my words help them find the right words so that we move close to accurate language that describes their feelings. An empowering, intuitive, respectful process where our words reflect feelings as accurately as possible increasing our mutual understanding and connection.
