Happy World Cassowary Day! Easily one of my favourite bird species, they really are like nothing else in existence. Just look at this stunner! 😍
There are three species of cassowaries found in New Guinea, but one of these – the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) – is also found in the rainforests of Queensland's Wet Tropics.
Multiple threats like land clearance, habitat fragmentation and weed infestations, road fatalities, dog attacks and catastrophes like cyclones has necessitated its listing as a nationally endangered species.
World Cassowary Day began in 2014 to celebrate this incredible, unique and ancient flightless bird, and raise awareness of its plight and advocacy for its conservation.
@westbec, Reece and I saw this absolute beauty at Etty Bay a couple of years ago when we skived off from a conference we were attending in Cairns, hired a car for the afternoon and went cassowary hunting. Best truancy escapade ever.
In 2015 we had waited 20 years for the @nqcowboys to become Champions for the 1st time in club history in what was without a doubt the best finals game ever witnessed by anyone who watched. 2017 we were not even considered a chance especially when we lost JT @jthurston06 to injury and barely making the Top 8 to making it to the Grand Final against the Storm next week. It's time to do it again! Underdog's yes! But it's our keep fighting, never die spirit that's has got us where we are and no one can deny our efforts or say we don't deserve to be there! Can't wait for next week! LET'S GO COWBOYS!!! #northqueensland#cowboys#grandfinal#2017#nrl 👨🌾🏉 #letsgo#underdogs#NQTougherTogether
