But on a serious note, I want to talk about this whole “good” vs. “bad” food mentality. See, a lot of people categorize foods using these two labels...

Pizza, burgers, and fries? BAD foods.
Salad, fruit, and veggies? GOOD foods.

It makes sense intuitively, but the problem is there’s really no such thing as “good” and “bad” foods. Yes, some foods may have more nutrients that other foods. Some foods may have more calories than others. Neither of those things inherently make a food good or bad, though...

Plus, nutrition is never black and white.

A salad might have more nutrients than a pizza, but that doesn’t mean all pizzas are void of nutrients. What’s more, I’ve seen folks eating “healthy” salads that have more calories than pizza!

The Bottom Line: eating “good” foods and avoiding “bad” foods isn’t guaranteed to help you lose weight and stay lean. What DOES guarantee weight loss is controlling your calories and eating whole foods most of the time.

1. Lemon Slices and Crushed Ginger (I personally like to add boiled water to a large batch and let cool in refrigerator for later)
2. Cucumber and Orange Slices (Yummy, reminds me of the spa)
3. Apple slices and Cinnamon Sticks
4. Sliced Strawberries, Lemon and Fresh Basil
5. Cubed Watermelon and Fresh Mint
6. Fresh Rosemary and Sliced Grapefruit
7. Fresh Crushed Ginger and Basil with Lime
8. Fresh Mint and Sliced Limes
9. Fresh Sliced Strawberry, Kiwi, and Lime
10. Sliced Orange and Smashed Blueberry
(Let infuse at room temperature for at least two hours or put in jars and refrigerator overnight)
Meeting your body’s hydration needs doesn’t have to be difficult. By switching out your Diet Coke for a glass of fruit infused water, you can make sure you are properly hydrated without all the added sweeteners.

BulgarianSplit Squats - one of those hated and maybe avoided movements. I warm up almost every single workout with 3-5 sets of 10-15. If it's legs or not this is an essential movement to open up the anterior chain while activating and strengthening the posterior chain. With being single leg we also need to be able to keep our posture in check to properly balance. When performed correctly and frequently you'll see significant improvements in all areas of you're training. Also, booty gains & what more could one want really 😉

💥HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT vs. HOW TO LOSE FAT💥

🌽If all you take from this post is one thing let it be this: WEIGHT does NOT equal FAT. And if you weigh yourself one morning and the scale pops up (even after a "perfect" day of eating), it does not mean you gained fat. Your weight will constantly go up and down and left and right for no other reason than you're putting things in and squeezing them out of your body on a daily basis.
- ☕️Truth is, losing weight is easy. You can get the scale to say you weigh less by sitting in a hot tub and sweating for 15min. You can lose weight by cutting salt and carbs from your diet so your body holds onto less water. And you lose weight every time you pee and poop and even on those special occasions when you do both at the same time.
- 🍆Focusing on your weight is a surefire way to set yourself up for failure and disappointment. Not allowing yourself to be happy until you reach your "goal weight" will screw with your head and emotions and do more harm than good.
- 🦄By all means, use the scale as a tool. But you need to remember the scale means NOTHING compared to how you look and feel. The scale is not always indicative of fat loss (or gain). And if you mainly focus on trying to move the scale, you'll end up looking for short-term fixes instead of long-term solutions.
- 🍓If your goal is to lose fat, focus less on moving the scale and more on hitting your calories and protein. Strength train 2-4x/week. And be flexible with your diet. Because progress comes from consistency, not rigidity. And the sooner you understand this is a life-long process (not a 30-day challenge), the sooner you will be leaner, stronger, healthier, and happier with your body.

I'm currently helping several of my pregnant clients with their health - and baby's health - during this wonderful time of their lives. A recent trial evaluated the effect of exercise during pregnancy on lipid levels, and the associated health outcomes for the mother and baby.

Women tend to be hesitant when engaging in exercise during pregnancy. The American College of Obstetricians recommends exercise for pregnant women regardless of the activity level prior to pregnancy because of the overall health benefits of exercise and the associated positive neonatal outcomes. Further, physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), pre-eclampsia, chronic hypertension, and excessive gestational weight gain in pregnant women and large birth weight in newborns. However, pregnant women often avoid exercise because they are unsure about the types and amount of exercise that are safe and ultimately miss out on the associated benefits.

At the end of the day, we need to make quality just as big of a priority as quantity within our diets. At certain times one or the other may take the lead role, but across the year their importance is equal.

So here’s my suggestions to make sure you DON’T end up with any nutrient deficiencies:
• 80-90% of your diet whole foods that came from the earth, either grown or roamed.
• Eat the rainbow, NOT skittles. Practice variety in your weekly nutrition plan.
• Don’t follow one specific approach. I’m going to be super real here, veganism and vegetarianism isn’t optimal for health. Neither is Keto. Neither is IIFYM. And I could go on... every diet has pros and cons, learn and use them all!
• Shop organic or local as often as you can.
• Avoid artificial sweeteners as much as possible, they won’t kill you but they’re probably not good for you.
• Eliminate professed and refined sugars. Period.
• Avoid processed foods as much as you can.

I loooove rows! Dumbbell rows. Seated cable rows. T-Bar rows! (<-- We don't have this set up in our gym here 😢 I so sad! ) But you name it! I shall row it! 🚣

Lately, I have been incorporating these little guys into my routine and they are definitely creeping their way to the top of my favorite row variation!

I've found they are especially great at the end of a workout (as I did here) when you've used up all of your gas🚏on the heavy lifts in the beginning but still have a just a little left to give. Know what I'm sayin?

I'll be honest though, I actually didn't care for them the first time around! 😲 It wasn't until I really started honing in on mind-muscle connection and consciously improving my scapular mobility that I really start feeling the benefits of these! Now I love em! 🖤

How many times have you said you’ll DO/BE/CAN when you lose (_) weight? I get it. I lost years of my life obsessed with losing weight. And I fantasized about a different life that would all of a sudden fall into my lap and cure all my problems. I weighed myself everyday, cried in dressing rooms and complained to my family and friends. I tried to lose weight with crash diets and beat myself up each time they didn’t “work.” Today, I’m pretty sure I weigh what I did then. But today I don’t own a scale, I have clothes in my closet that fit instead of ones I wish did, and I work with my body instead of against it. Through food and also my thoughts & mindset.

No one knows what you weigh. No one knows if you’re wearing a small, medium or large shirt. And no one cares or loves you less if you lose or gain 5 pounds. 
There’s nothing wrong with weight loss or weight loss goals - BUT it HAS to come from a bigger WHY and it has to start with you. Why do you think you can’t have what you want right now? Why do you think you have to wait till you lose the weight? Why are you holding yourself back? That’s where goals begin. With figuring out the answer to those questions.

There are:
8 years,
The death of my mom, 
5 moves,
7 jobs (for me),
Our marriage,
2 home purchases,
A REALLY stressful/dangerous living situation, 
1 pregnancy/healthy beautiful baby girl (who screamed the 1st 1.5 years of her life),
Postpartum depression,
several miscarriages,
...And many other postive (& not-so-positive) things I won't bother mentioning between these pictures.
* * * *
👆On the left (Age 28):
👉I was just starting to train for a figure competition
👉Poor posture
👉So much emotional & $$$ stress
👉Not sleeping enough
👉WAY Overtraining (6-7x/week @ least 2 hrs a day)
👉Poor relationship w/food & myself
👉NEVER listened to my body
👉Extreme pain from bulging discs, degenerative disc disease & serious reverse curve in my neck
* * * *
👆On the right (Age 36):
👉Corrected Posture after years of work
👉No back pain (even training during/after pregnancy)
👉So much love & appreciation for my body
👉Intuitively eating balanced meals & actually enjoying food
👉Training 4 to 5 times/week between 20 minutes to 1 hour (RARE occasions I get 1.5 hours🙏)
👉Listen to my body when it comes to pain, sleep, stress, food etc

I'm telling you all this for 2 reasons:

1) Life will ALWAYS happen. There Won't be a perfect time to focus on healthier habits or to put yourself 1st & sometimes you will have to fight to do both. Your health & yourself become priorities when YOU make them priorities. If you're waiting for the world, your work, your loved ones, your friends, your teachers, your schedule, or whoever else to give you time or permission to put yourself 1st - you will die waiting.

2) True transformation takes TIME, patience, learning about YOUR body, & striking a balance between giving yourself a shit ton of grace while also pushing yourself to grow a little bit everyday. Stop assuming other's paths are linear. They aren't. No one's is...& if it seems that way then you aren't seeing the whole picture.

“First you tell me to be hungry, now you’re telling me to eat less food?!? This sounds like hell if you ask me." Okay, okay. Fair enough.  As a reformed restrained eater, I am all too familiar with the anxiety that comes with waiting for the next meal. #isittimetoeatyet

Rather than stoke that fear, my aim is to reassure you that there is no need to panic. 
Under perfect circumstances, our hunger and satiety cues work in perfect harmony with our lives.  We eat when we’re hungry, stop when full, maintain our weight, and never have to give a second thought about food.

But…we don’t live in a perfect world. Reality and physiology don’t always match up.  This means that we have to take mindful steps to help the body feel and function at it’s best.

Habit #11 – Satisfied, Not Stuffed

Try this:
1)	Eat to satisfaction, but not to the point where you are uncomfortably full.

2)	Slow down and give the stomach and brain a chance to “talk.” .

3)	Remind yourself that you’ll feel better when you’ve eaten the right amount of food, rather than suffering through the nausea, indigestion, discomfort, and lethargy that comes with overeating.

If you aren’t in the habit of depriving yourself, then there is any reason to fear a lack of food. The next meal isn’t far off. 
Enjoy this one.  Honor your body. Feel great. Move on.

Disclaimer: This is not a, "Hey, I'm a trainer look at how healthy I eat all the time", type of post. 
The truth is that I don't eat perfectly all the time, nor do I care. I do eat with a purpose, and my goal is to eat a good amount of protein and fruits and vegetables and healthy fats with each meal. I cycle my starchy carb intake on training days. I also reward myself with whatever I want from time to time. My wife, @alycepochini is also an amazing cook, so I eat very well, and I am lucky to have home cooked meals pretty much every day.
Let me get back on track. 
This picture is to show you that even when you don't have time to cook or prep, you can still put together a healthy meal without a lot of planning or cooking. 
This meal consisted of a bag of frozen steam in the bag broccoli, 1/2 of a rotisserie chicken, and left over mashed sweet potatoes. Simple.
Don't let time be an excuse to fall off your goal. Stick to the basics and be consistent & patient and you will see results over time.

Holidays and time away from your normal routine can make it challenging to stick to your healthy eating habits. I have managed to put on 2kgs over the holiday period which is mostly due to inflammation and putting stress on my digestive system by eating foods it finds hard to digest. ⠀

Now that I am back into the swing of things, to reset my body I add in lots of gut healing foods such as bone broths, apple cider vinegar, kefir and eat as cleanly as possible, no chemicals. I completely cut out gluten and sugar. I usually find that by doing this I reduce inflammation and get my body back to its optimal weight.⠀

INGREDIENTS

4-6 Homemade spelt pita or vegan soy free pita( but all the ones I seen was wheat. So I made my own)

Tzatziki

½ cup organic full fat coconut milk (shake the can before to avoid separation)
3 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp olive oil 
½ tsp Himalayan salt
2 tbsp tahini
2 cloves garlic
½ cup raw cashews (soaked for at least 2 hours in spring water. Then blended) 
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp chopped fresh dill
½ cup finely diced cucumber 
Toppings

2 tomatoes
1 red onion
½  cucumber

Jackruit Gyro "Meat"

14 oz young jackfruit 
2 tbsp  minced garlic 
2 tbsp grapeseed l oil
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
¼ cup organic ketchup

Gyro Seasoning

1 tsp oregano
¾ tsp salt
1 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp sodium free chili powder (depending on how spicy you want it)
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp garlic powder
¼ tsp black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Tzatziki:

Prepare vegan tzatziki by blending all ingredients for the tzatziki except for dill and cucumber in a high speed blender until smooth. Mix in finely diced cucumber and dill by hand after blending. Set aside. Leave in the refrigerator for a thicker sauce while you prepare the gyros.

For the Gyros:

Mix all gyro seasoning spices together in a small bowl with lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, and ketchup , and jackfruit.  Saute' for about 4-5 min in a grapeseed oil heated skillet.

Heat pita!

Slice red onion, cucumber, and tomatoes. Assemble sandwiches by placing gyro meat, tomato slices, cucumber slices, and red onion slices on a wrap. Top generously with tzatziki. Enjoy!

🤓So you want a healthy lunch, and figure the best place to go is the salad bar. This is a personal favourite meal option for me, BUT if you aren’t savvy to all the hidden calories that can easily be sprinkled on top of your bed of greens, then you could end up consuming about the same amount of calories as that burger and fries you avoided!

🔹First things first. Make sure you are choosing 1-2 protein options. This will help keep you full longer (along with 1001 other benefits that I will save for another post!). Get in that protein!!!!

🔹The KEY to feeling full and satisfied, without consuming an unnecessary amount of calories is to load up with veggies!  I LOVE adding cabbage, cucumbers, peppers, onions, tomatoes and mushrooms to my salads to add extra volume for very little calories!

🔹Be careful of the nuts, dried fruits, avocados, croutons, cheeses and dressings. These can add up QUICK!  Choose 1 or 2 of these items and stick to about 1oz serving size. -
😃Low calorie dressing tip!  Sriracha, balsamic vinegar (without the oil) or apple cider vinegar are all Zero to low calorie options that are delicious additions to a big salad!

Right now I’m making some major shifts in life. Similar to @amandabarelli_in3, I’ve been stepping away from a performance focus (via competitive Crossfit) & shifting to aesthetics.

Ironically when I met with @bryanboorstein about gym programming, I was making a lot of programming requests to continue doing things in the gym that lined up with my old goals.

He built this AWESOME 1st week of programming that looked SO fun.. but it didn’t fit with my current needs and where I TRULY should be investing my time (which is more funct bodybuilding/less CrossFit/less overall time in the gym so i can focus on work).
.
I basically made the “rookie mistake” we experience so often as nutrition coaches where I was asking my gym coach to give me abs and AND ALSO make me the strongest athlete in the room - Oops!
.
So I took a few days to analyze and re-establish what I SHOULD be doing to achieve my goals, and we adjusted programming accordingly.
.
I can’t say enough how important it is to hold yourself accountable and have multiple people in your life that you constantly “check-in” with to make sure you’re staying on track (nutritionally, in the gym, with your job, etc)
.
I’m a firm believer that every coach needs a coach... and well shoot, I have 3!

Had a time crunch tonight and needed a quick dinner before heading to a meeting. Whipped this up in less than 30 minutes (that includes all the vegetable prep and cooking time!) Quinoa, topped with sauteed veggies and sunflower seeds. I sauteed the veggies in olive oil, coconut aminos, a hint of hoisin sauce and freshly grated garlic and ginger.

The middle school girls in that room opened my eyes up to the work we still have to do as adults...the work we have to do to better ourselves so those growing young girls see strong, independent, self loving role models & strive to be like them.
