Yesterday, our Director of Health Literacy, Diversity and Outreach, Celina Ramsey, was on a panel at the NYC Forum on Consumer Health Literacy sponsored by @nychealthy. The topic of discussion was Cultural and Linguistic Competency of Health Communications! #StatenIslandPPS#ForAHealtheirSI#HealthLiteracy#NYCDOHMH
Shout out to the Clinical-Community Program Linkages team. I'm sad to be leaving the DOH today, but even sadder to leave these wonderful people behind. I don't think I could have imagined starting my career with a better organization or a better group of people. When I think leader, innovator, or trailblazer- I think of these ladies. Looking forward to taking what they've taught me and making a big impact in my next step, wherever that may be. #thankyou#NYCDOHMH#publichealth#mustache

True story, this happened last night: The man pointing in this picture is Frankie, and he wanted to fight me 10 minutes before this shot was taken. On the streets of Manhattan, I didn't move out of the way as he walked by, so he felt disrespected and immediately got confrontational and threatened me with violence. I was with my friend Millie and we both said, "nah", and walked away- but even as the guy got more and more distant, I could see that he was still cursing out loud and rambling to himself. I wanted to know wtf he was so upset about, because it was bigger than our altercation. As I ran back over to where he was, he approached me and started apologizing before I could even say anything. I asked him why he was so upset, turns out he and his wife just lost their housing that day and are now sleeping on the streets. It's also difficult to find shelters that take couples, and ones that let you bring in large items(Frankie and his wife had two suitcases with them). I wanted to share this story because I believe compassion is important, especially when it's hard to give, like when someone is trying to attack you. I think most people who lash out and hurt others are probably hurt themselves....Frankie gave me his rosary beads and I gave him my Buddhist prayer bracelet, so we're cool now✌️... Frankie also gave me his email, and I'm going to send him any information I can find about getting housing in NYC. If you have any information or resources you would like to share, please leave a comment or send me a message!😁 #endhomelessness#nyc#manhattan#lovethyneighbor#selfie#nycdohmh#swordstoplowshares
