The 4 common cereals:
Barley - was the "common" cereal traditionally, today it's produced mainly for whiskey-production. Barley can be cultivated in the coldest climate to the warmest in the Tropics. Grows best in light-weighted and potassium-rich soil. In sweden it's mostly sown as spring cereals, autumn sowning is however possible in the southern parts.
Rye - said to boost the immunesystem, improve allergy resistance and prevent prostatacancer. It was once one of the most important cereals until it got outcompeted by the wheat-production in 1920's. Rye is very hardy and tolerate living even in mountainous terrain.
Wheat - there are more than 35 000 registred wheat species in the world today. They are mainly divided into two groups: the spring sown and the autumn sown. The autumn is the most common although the spring sown yields higher protein-content. Wheat has been cultivated in the Middle east since 11 000 years ago, and scientists believe that the first wheat-specie: Emmer, was cultured 2000 years later. Among the cereals have both rye and oat developed through mimikry, called the Vavilovs mimikry, to resemble the wheat in order to not get out-sorted.
Oat - the first traces of oat-cultivation is from the Mediterranean 2000 years ago. The Greeks said that it was not good enough for human consumption. Today we know better, the oats are both antioxidant, antiinflammatry and inherit also betaglucan, which lowers the colesterol. Growing oats require a lot of precipitation but can be grown in most soils.
For picture reference: 1st pic left top - barley, 2nd in the row - rye (looks like barley but with longer spikes) , at the bottom starting from left: wheat, last oat.
