Don't let the sign scare you, it's only a little bit of radiation. Ok, maybe a moderate amount of radiation. #radiation #radioactive #xray #radiationtherapy #warning #safetyfirst #safety #hazard #sign #caution #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious
One of these Hellenized heads is a figure of Isis (the goddess not the assholes) from 100BC-200AD Egypt, the other from the Indus Valley region of Pakistan in the 2nd-5th century AD. Why is Greek art in Pakistan, thousands of miles away? Because that's how far Alexander the Great was willing to go on his quest to conquer the world, bringing plenty of Greek culture with him. Neither one is a recent acquisition, both were ethically acquired years ago from a reputable dealer. The isis figure on the left was formerly a part of the Alex Malloy collection. #terracotta #antiquities #india #pakistan #hellenic #art #alexanderthegreat #alexander #indus #greek #grecoroman #ancient #egypt #egyptian #oddities #oddacious #wunderkammer #collection

The lifecycle of the Silkworm in lucite. We got eggs, we got worms, chrysalis, silk cocoons, males, females, the whole deal. It's kinda neat, I remember growing these as a class project in kindergarten. Now I just keep them frozen for eternity in a chunk of plastic. So much less maintenance this way, highly recommended. #lucite #silk #silkworm #preserved #taxidermy #insect #specimen #worm #chrysalis #moth #wunderkammer #collection #oddiies #oddacious #bug #bugs #cocoon

I love spy shit! This is how the FBI bugs your totally legitimate night club. This is the device that receives and records the transmissions from the surveillance bugs they plant in your lampshade. It's configured to receive on two frequencies, 164.865mhz, and 156.090mhz. So, uhh, now you know what frequencies to snoop on. It can receive both clear, and scrambled signals, and can play the audio out the speaker, headphones, or record it to cassette. When The Man parks a flower van down the street, he's got one of these babies in the back. It's an older analog system, the new ones are all digital, so this particular model is obsolete, but it absolutely still works. If I can find one of the bugs that would go with it, I'll have a super cool demonstration piece to blow people's minds. For extra credit, go google "156.090 MHz". You'll find an FCC violation issues to the New York Unified Court System, for unauthorized use of this frequency, outside of "accordance with the rules applicable to their particular service." The location of the violation was the Brooklyn Supreme Court in NY. So, basically that's someone getting busted for using equipment just like this to illegally wiretap something inside the Brooklyn Supreme Court. Daaaaamn. That's some spook shit right there. I'm in love with this thing. There's an 800 number for "Cusfomer Assistance" that belongs to the National Intelligence Academy. American propaganda training leaflet. I believe this is Cold War era, and was intended as a training aid, presented to American soldiers so they would recognize a real propaganda leaflet when they saw one. There are a handful of tropes that get repeated in everyone's propaganda, the most common gimmick is the ol' "While you're fighting this war, yer wife is getting satisfied by someone else. Just thought you should know." Why do they still do it if everyone knows the trick? Because it works anyway. Propaganda is an enormously effective tool, used to shape our societies in a huge variety of ways. Marketing is propaganda. Propaganda is marketing. Why do I need a Coca-Cola right now, and not a Pepsi? #propaganda #marketing #militaria #advertising #leaflet #war #coldwar #psyops #psychology #psych #soviet #sovietunion #ussr #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Japanese puzzle boxes are amazing. They can require anywhere from 1 to hundreds of moves to open, in a range of sizes from match box to treasure chest. The dazzling pattern on the surface makes it difficult to figure out where the lines are. It looks pretty easy on video, but it's surprisingly hard to figure out the first time. Even the first few moves can take most people quite some time. From a distance, you'd think it was some kind of weird decorative cube, but it would probably never even occur to you that it was actually a stash box. I love these things, I've got a few different ones in the collection. It's fun to watch people try to figure them out. The one-movers are actually the most frustrating for people, because you get no sense of progress at all until you figure out the trick all at once, usually by accident. #puzzle #puzzlebox #japan #japanese #stash #stashbox #paraphernalia #box #puzzles #puzzletime #woodworking #woodcraft #woodwork #wood #wood #stashedboxes #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

This is a piece of another planet. Mars, to be specific, about 1/4gram of it. How it got here is a complicated, and violent story. It all started about 474 million years ago, when a rock crystallized out of a moving lava flow, within a few meters of the surface of Mars. Of course, this also means that Mars was still geologically active half a billion years ago, perhaps even today. That's pretty significant in itself. Anyway, this chunk o' rock just chilled for the next 473 million years, when about 1.1 million years ago, it had an unfortunate encounter with a lost asteroid that smashed into Mars with enough energy to blow this formerly chill chunk of rock straight into space, and into orbit around the sun for a while. 60,000 years ago, it suffered the indignity of another high speed collision, this time with Libya. There it sat for another 60,000 years until someone found it, gave it a name, Dar al Gani 476, and discovered that it was, in fact, from Mars. You remember when this little guy was crystallizing in a lava flow near the surface? Well, when a rock crystallizes tiny bubbles of gas get trapped inside, the kind of gasses that make up the atmosphere of Mars. When Viking 1 and 2 landed on Mars, and measured the ratios of several gasses in the atmosphere, guess what they're an almost exact match for? There is no place in the universe this rock could possibly be from, except Mars. You can buy one for like a hundred bucks. Go fucking do it. Now. Not this one though, it's mine forever. #mars #martian #meteorite #space #rockhounds #rocksfromspace #dag476 #libya #desert #viking #nasa #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

The Effects of Nuclear War. Spoiler alert: It's bad news. All of it. This report was commissioned by the US Senate in 1979 to examine the effects of nuclear war involving the United States. It includes data on blast effects, radiation, fallout patterns, economic effects, social/political disruption, etc. both in the short term, and long term. Short version, society breaks down, you're on your own, best of luck, watch out for the invisible, all pervasive radiation. It's hard to even say that moving to a tall concrete building is a good idea. I mean, yeah, there's less radiation, but that's just one of your many problems. There is no good news in nuclear war, just bad news, and even worse news. I guess with all the North Korea shenanigans this might be timely. #nuclear #atomic #nuclearwar #nuclearblast #nuke #missile #northkorea #apocalypse #war #death #destruction #blast #radiation #fallout #senate #theendisnigh #theend #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #congress #ota #prepper #doomsday #prepping

Early 1900's realistic metal housefly stickpin. From more than a foot away, you would not know it wasn't a real fly. The body is made of metal, either iron or bronze, I'm not sure. The wings are celluloid, so they're transparent, if a little cloudy from age. Its front legs are a little bent, but fortunately they're not broken, so it just looks like it's cleaning itself. #housefly #stickpin #brooch #pin #jewelry #fly #antique #novelty #realistic #antiquejewelry #broochpin #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Vial of dirt from the KT boundary from Hell Creek, South Dakota. It was deposited 65 million years ago, when the dinosaurs died after an asteroid 6 miles wide smashed into Mexico at 30,000 mph. Approximately 75% of species on Earth at the time went extinct after the planet was shrouded in a global layer of dust, and sulfurous smog. The plants got no sun, so they almost all died, causing a global collapse of both marine, and land ecosystems. As the dust rained back down over a period of years, it deposited a layer of Iridium enriched dust around the entire planet. In some places, it still exists. Below this layer of dirt, there are dinosaurs aplenty. Above it, there are none. Iridium is extremely rare on the surface of the Earth, but relatively common in asteroids. There's only one place it could have come from, an asteroid impact. Everything on Earth weighing more than 50lbs died. Except turtles and crocodiles, they're tough sumbitches. #dinosaurs #asteroid #extinction #cretaceous #paleogene #kt #meteorite #impact #hellcreek #southdakota #dakota #tektite #space #spacerock #bigbadaboom #iridium #mexico #yucatan #chicxulub #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

2nd-4th century Roman trilobate arrowhead, found on an ancient battlefield near the Black Sea in what would have been Thrace in Macedonia at the time. Silver tetradrachm coin from the reign of Alexander The Great. It was minted between 336-323BC, in the city of Babylon, where Alexander died in 323 BC. On the front is the face of Alexander, as he wanted to be seen, not necessarily what he actually looked like. On the back is Zeus, holding a scepter in one hand, and an owl in the other, representing Athena. It's a fairly fine quality specimen, but coins like this in general were fairly roughly struck, often unevenly or off-center. Each coin is individually struck, with a die and hammer, but the priority was to churn out large quantities of coins, not to make them perfect. It also happens to be 2300 years old, so I'd say that it looks pretty good, all things considered. #coin #numismatic #ancient #alexanderthegreat #alexander #greek #macedonia #babylon #zeus #Heracles #athena #owl #greekgod #currency #money #silver #tetradrachm #drachma #silvercoin #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #coins #coincollecting #ancientgreek #ancientcoins

American WWII "educational" pamphlet produced by the US War Department in April, 1945. Now that both Mussolini, and Hitler had been defeated, only Tojo was left in Japan. Since the war was reduced to one front, a lot of soldiers are going to be going home, but many would still have to stick around to finish the job in the Pacific theater. The pamphlet lays out the ground rules for who gets to go home first and establishes a point system, heavily favoring those who'd actually fought in combat. This is a piece of the core of a planet that was obliterated in a high speed collision with another planet. As the solar system was forming 4.5 billion years ago, there were hundreds of planets, careening around, getting flung every which way by the neighborhood bully, Jupiter. Earth and the other terrestrial planets are just the only ones that survived the process. This 8.5 lb Gibeon meteorite slice from Namibia is one of my favorites. Gibeons are prized because they're both aesthetically beautiful, and chemically stable, making them less rust-prone than a lot of iron meteorites. It was one of the largest known meteorite fields with a total known mass over 25 tons. It fell in prehistoric times, but locals in the area had been making iron tools al d weapons from it for hundreds of years at least before being identified as extraterrestrial in origin. The crisscrossing layers, called a Widmanstatten pattern, exist only in meteorites, and cannot be replicated on Earth. They form as a molten blob of iron/nickel cools veeerrry slowly in space, in alternating layers of kamacite and taenite. We're talking a few degrees every million years slowly. You probably think of space as extremely cold, and it is, but it's also a vacuum which makes it a fantastic thermos. Hot things stay hot for a long time, because the only way they can release heat is through radiation of photons, which is far less efficient than good ol' convection. #meteorite #gibeon #iron #nickel #space #namibia #africa #minerals #rockhound #mineralspecimen #widmanstatten #planets #oddacious #wunderkammer #collection #oddities

Snuff is super finely ground tobacco that you snort instead of smoke. The small particle size maximizes surface area allowing nicotine to more rapidly enter the bloodstream through the mucous membranes in the nose/throat, giving a quick, large hit of nicotine. It's been in use since the 1600s, going in and out of favor at various points. It's been claimed to be safer than smoking because it doesn't cause lung cancer, but I dunno that trading lung for oral cancer is all that much of an improvement. It's largely fallen out of favor in the US, the only person I've ever known to use snuff was my grandfather, who I think died of complications from oral cancer. Snuff is still sold today, but it's called Snus now. This bottle appears to be full, but the tax seal is broken so it's probably been opened at some point. #tobacco #snuff #snort #snorting #nosmoking #cancer #oralcancer #nicotine #drug #oldbottles #vintagebottles #levigarrett #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

RepostBy @oddacioustreasures: "Nagasaki/Hiroshima atomic bombing themed ball-in-the-hole game by AC Gilbert from the late 1940s. The object is to get the bombs into the holes where Nagasaki, and Hiroshima are. It's pretty sick and wrong, of course, but nations who win wars really enjoy gloating about it for a while afterwards. Shortly after the war, there wasn't a whole lot of sympathy for Japan, so I don't imagine there were a lot of frowny faces about this game at the time. It's interesting to me that the generation who might have seen, or played this game as kids was the same generation that lived through the Red Scare, and the early years of the Cold War. Those same kids were diving under desks and assuming the "Oh fuck, we're all gonna die." position during nuclear attack drills. I wonder if any of them made the connection between their fears of apocalypse, and the very real trauma experienced by the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. #ballinthehole #nuclear #atomic #bomb #game #gilbert #nagasaki #hiroshima #atomicbomb #wrong #gamesforkids #vintage #antique #bb #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #japan #wwii #worldwar2 #war #wargame #acgilbert"

Holy crap, this Roto-vue forest fire lamp looks fucking amazing when it's running. It's utterly mesmerizing, I could watch it for hours. It functions passively, aside from the light bulb driving convection. The air it heats rises and turns a fan that rotates a cylinder with a stenciled mask that causes the flickering as it spins. Turn it on, wait a minute and it starts spinning all by itself. I absolutely love it, it's beautiful. An Orrery is a mechanical model that simulates the motions of planetary bodies in the Solar System. I've desperately wanted one since childhood, so it's great to finally have a vintage one that works. This 1940s model, from Trippensee simulates the motions of Earth, Moon, and Venus around the sun, the seasons, solar eclipses, etc. Did you know that Venus has phases, much like what we see with the Moon? That's why Venus is half shaded in this model. In the 1940s, we had no idea what Venus looked like beyond that, it was just a featureless blob in telescopes. The Earth should actually be tilted at a 23.5 degree angle, but it appears to have been broken, and improperly repaired at some point. I would love to find some parts to repair it. #orrery #science #planets #space #solarsystem #sun #earth #moon #venus #planetary #orbit #orbital #planet #seasons #globe #trippensee #planetarium #educational #model #wunderkammer #collection #odditites #oddacious #sciencenerd #scienceiscool #spaceshipearth #solar #solareclipse #eclipse

WW II Army Air Forces stuffed dog. I'm liking the googly eyes. Prior to 1947, what would become the Air Force was actually a part of the Army, thus the Army Air Forces label. The only reference I can find for this is that they were souvenirs sold at Foster Field, Texas. I wish I knew more about it than that. Maybe it was some kind of mascot for the airfield or something? The airfield was closed in 1945, so there's nobody there to ask about it. If anyone out there knows more about it, I'd love to hear it. #stuffedanimal #stuffed #mascot #dog #reddog #army #airforce #usaf #wwii #ww2 #fosterfield #military #militaria #souvenir #vintage #toy #toydog #googlyeyes #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Or, you know...maybe not. Let's go with not, of the "Dear God, please no!" variety. Oliver North was the central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal in the 1980s. The idea was to sell weapons to Iran, who would use their influence with Hezbollah, to negotiate the release of American hostages being held in Lebanon, then take the profits from the weapons sales, and divert them to anti-communist Contras in Nicaragua through Manuel Noriega in Panama, who received kickbacks for his efforts. Got all that? In testimony to Congress, North himself called it a "neat idea". It was all super illegal, and caused quite the scandal. Reagan himself was implicated, but claimed to not have known the full extent of the shenanigans. Ollie was fired, charged with a variety of crimes, and convicted, but his conviction was later overturned. He unsuccessfully ran for one of Virginia's Senate seats, but never actually made a run for president. He had a radio show for a few years, but I'm not sure what he's been up to lately. #ollie #ollienorth #olivernorth #scandal #contra #irancontra #reagan #politics #political #president #election #button #political #propaganda #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #campaign

I remember making a pinewood derby car as a kid in the Cub Scouts, so it was a huge nostalgia rush to find one at a flea market. Best $5 I ever spent. You always want to build a fast car, of course, so it's a great chance for a kid to learn about some basic physics that can give them an advantage over the competition. In general, you want an aerodynamic wedge shaped car, well lubricated wheels/axles, the maximum weight allowed, and a center of mass about 2cm forward of the rear axle. This car doesn't do any of that, but kids in the 1960s couldn't just google this shit in 15 seconds. Kids and their dads had to figure this stuff out on their own. It originally belonged to an Eric Hollowell, it would be neat to find him and give him back a little piece of his childhood. #nostalgia #boyscouts #cubscouts #pinewood #derby #pinewoodderby #scouts #racecar #woodcraft #fatherandson #fathersontime #fathersonbonding #childhoodmemories #boyscout #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Goethite, from Chihuahua, Mexico. It's composed of iron, oxygen, and a little hydrogen, so it's basically rust with an OH attached. It's been used as a pigment for tens of thousands of years at least. More recently, well, Iron Age recently, it's a good source ore for the smelting of iron. #goethite #mineral #mineralspecimen #minerals #rockhound #mineralogy #geology #iron #rust #ore #mining #chihuahua #mexico #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious
I have no clue what this hot mess is. When I bought it, I thought it may be Wulfenite, but I'm not so sure. Anyone have an idea? SWIPE for more: This is Seek, the LDS trivia game. Mormons have a practice they call Family Home Evening(FHE) once a week, usually Monday's. Everyone stays home, plays games, usually bible games, sing choir songs, maybe some bible study, and general family business chitchat. There are certainly some sketchy practices of the LDS church, but it's hard to argue with the wholesomeness of Family Night, even if it is a little heavy on the indoctrination/bible stuff. Seek is basically a Bible/Book of Mormon trivia game. There are about 400 questions spread across 4 categories, Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Church doctrine. Some of the questions are...interesting. I'm a particular fan of the ones about baptizing the dead, a controversial practice the church used to practice openly. It still happens, but it's officially discouraged now. Not because they realize it's creepy, but because they realize it's bad PR to be caught post-humously baptizing people like Gandhi. #seek #lds #mormon #mormonism #mormonlife #mormonchurch #familynight #familyhomeevening #fhe #religion #religious #indoctrination #game #boardgame #trivia #triviagame #bible #bibletrivia #bookofmormon #doctrine #church #oldtestament #newtestament #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #latterdaysaints

This painting, to me, is the perfect representation of a cult. Its creator was in a cult called the Word of Life Fellowship, or WOLF. Yeah, seriously. Cults rarely comprehend their own irony. I've been fascinated by cults my entire adult life. They come in all different flavors, shapes, and sizes. But fundamentally, once you strip away their individual dogma, and origin stories, it's always the same thing. One all-powerful leader figure hiding behind a pulpit, spewing bile into the willing and eager mouths of their victims. People think cults are about religion, but they're not. Cults are about one thing. Control. Money, power, influence, all of those come a result of Control. If you control a person's access to information, to food, to sleep, to friendship, or affection, you can control how they think, how they feel, how they act, everything. It's difficult to grasp how deep and pervasive the mindfuck can be. People choose cults over their own children. Today, someone who desperately loves their child, chose a cult over them. They're not bad people, they *really* do think they're doing the right thing. You may think "Well, I could never do that. Those people must be stupid, or gullible, or weak." But the truth is far more complicated, and more disturbing. The truth is that *any* of us can be vulnerable to the right pitch at the right time. Those people *are* victims, but it's also true that they participate of their own free will. They eagerly lift their heads and accept a mouthful of vomit, and they *love* it. That's how powerful cults are. It all seems so obvious from the outside. It's so hard to understand how people could fall victim. But, they do. Everyone's ruin is their own, and when a cult figures out what you don't like about yourself, and exploits it, you *are* every bit as vulnerable. I wish I remembered the authors name, cuz that shit moved me. He's put himself in the painting, actually. This is what happens when inflation goes completely apeshit. In 1983, 1 Zimbabwe dollar was officially valued similarly to the US dollar, though its actual value was somewhat lower. 1 ZWD could buy you an egg. Through a litany of really bad decisions implemented by dictator Mugabe, the economy deteriorated at an ever increasing rate. Everything he tried to slow it down just made it even worse. At one point, in sheer desperation, he even tried declaring inflation illegal. It didn't work. By July, 2009 you'd need 100 trillion of them to buy that same egg. At its peak, the inflation rate was 79 *BILLION* percent per month. Imagine that you have 79 billion dollars. Pretty sweet, right? Ok now imagine that 30 days later you still have all that money, but it's only worth $1. Bummer. All paper currency is essentially based on faith in its value. If there's no faith, then there's no value. By late 2009, the government had no choice but to declare it dead and the official currency of Zimbabwe switched to USD, and the South African Rand. Strangely, these notes have become valuable again lately, not as currency, but as a collectors item. Investors have been hoarding them in bulk, then selling them individually, marked up 300%. They are cool, I have to admit. It sounds weird to say it, but I really hope I never become a trillionaire. Venezuela seems to be headed in this direction right now. You need bags full of cash just to buy groceries, if you're lucky enough to get them in the first place. #currency #money #zimbabwe #inflation #hyperinflation #mugabe #dollar #trillion #numismatics #papermoney #bill #note #bank #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #venezuela #economy #economiccrisis

Fear is a powerful tool. It's been used to manipulate people and populations for as long as either have existed. Its a simple formula, really. First you make someone afraid of something, and then you tell them that it's going to be ok, because you have the solution that will make them safe again. It doesn't matter if you have a solution, you just have to tell them that you do. You can get away with some pretty heinous shit that just wouldn't fly in a normal situation. There's a reason that the emotion most commonly exploited by propaganda is fear. It fucking works. McCarthyism is so blatantly un-American that it's hard to believe that it not only happened, but that a lot of people were totally in support of it. People who would consider themselves loyal, patriotic Americans even. Something tells me that I oughta hang onto this. In today's political climate, it doesn't really feel like we're all that far away from a comeback. #mccarthy  #politics  #politicsasusual  #coldwar  #propaganda  #fear  #manipulation  #witchhunt  #resist  #communism  #redscare  #wunderkammer  #collection  #oddities  #oddacious
A piece of the Berlin Wall preserved in lucite. I grew up during the Cold War, so watching the wall come down as the Soviet Union was coming apart at the seams was one of those world changing events that you just never forget. How crazy is it that 6000 miles away, some teenage kid in a completely different country on another continent didn't just care that someone was knocking down a wall, he fucking cried about how goddamned incredible this was. We all did. That shit was absolutely magical. What most people don't know is that it was all a huge misunderstanding. See, the Soviet government had resisted pressure to open up the passage for decades. At some point they decided ok, maybe we should allow more freedom of movement across the border between East and West Germany, so they announced a plan to open the border *in principle* but didn't really specify how or when. A crude announcement was cobbled together, some public official got the lucky assignment to read it aloud, and then a journalist raised their hand and asked when this change would take effect. The official looked at his paperwork, didn't see any reference to a specific timeframe, so he shrugged his shoulders and responded with something like "I dunno, immediately, I guess?" Everyone's jaw hit the floor, Soviet officials scrambled to contain the damage but it was already too late. Before they knew what was happening there were hundreds of thousands of people gathered on both sides of the wall, helping each other over. It didn't take long before the hammers and pick axes came out and started tearing it all down. Fucking rad. I feel really lucky to have been alive to witness it. Let this be an example that building walls between people usually creates more problems than it solves. #berlinwall #berlin #coldwar #ironcurtain #warsawpact #eastgermany #westgermany #germany #ussr #soviet #collapse #communism #memorablemoments #propaganda #oppression #reunited #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #wall #fuckingwall #buildthewall

Pure elemental Silicon crystal grown in a lab. It's kind of a weird element with a bunch of interesting properties. It's a semiconducting metalloid, who's electrical properties can be fine-tuned through careful doping, or insertion of impurities like Boron into the crystal matrix. This means that it's great for building things like transistors. Fortunately, it's also the 2nd most common element in Earth's crust, next to oxygen. 90% of Earth's crust is made from silicon bearing minerals, like dirt or sand, which is just silicon dioxide. It sits below Carbon on the periodic table of elements, and shares some interesting properties. For one, Carbon and Silicon both have 4 bonding electrons, making them capable of forming an enormous number of complex molecules, including long-chained molecules that make useful polymers like silicone. It's this property that makes Carbon so important for life. Silicon's similarity in this regard has led to speculation as to whether it too can be a foundation for living organisms based on Silicon instead of Carbon. It also happens to be the foundation for the technological revolution. No silicon, no computers, no Internet. Steel drove the industrial revolution, but the technological revolution we're in the middle of is all about the Silicon. #silicon #technology #rockhound #mineral #minerals #element #crystal #crystals #transistor #doping #semiconductor #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #mineralspecimen

Either Jamesonite, or Boulangerite, maybe both, with pyrite cubes from Zacatecas, Mexico. Im a sucker for minerals that produce fine, hair-like crystals, though I'm not really sure what it is about them that appeals to me. Both Jamesonite, and Boulangerite form delicate, needle-like crystals that look a lot like metallic hair, composed primarily of lead, antimony, and sulfur. They're uncommon minerals, that form in low temperature hydrothermal systems. I don't think it has any commercially useful properties that would make it desirable to mine, it's too uncommon to be a useful lead ore. It is pretty though. #mineral #mineralspecimen #minerals #rockhounds #jamesonite #boulangerite #lead #antimony #sulfur #zacatecas #mexico #mine #crystal #crystals #mineralogy #geology #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Faden Quartz is characterized by a flat tabular appearance, and a milky white line running down the center of the crystal. American propaganda leaflets from the first Gulf War, intended for use in Iraq, and Kuwait. They basically say "Don't worry, we're just here on a mission of liberation! Ya'll better GTFO Kuwait, or else. Check out our radio station! P.S. Don't resist or we'll shoot the fuck out of you." At least that's what I assume it says, since I don't read Arabic. It's probably something close to that. I was in my late teens during the first Gulf War. At the time, I remember being fascinated by all the televised briefings, F-117 raids, and bombcam videos. I remember reading about all the leaflets being dropped on Iraqi positions in the lead up to the ground invasion. It's kind of funny to me as an adult to recognize that all those bombcam videos were every bit as much a piece of clever propaganda as this leaflet. Once you know what it looks like, you start seeing propaganda all around you. #propaganda #leaflet #militaria #war #gulfwar #iraq #kuwait #radio #american #wartime #psyop #psychology #psych #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Sulfur is great stuff, even if it smell like a wet fart. Large sulfur crystals like this form in volcanic vents. Most commercially mined sulfur comes as a byproduct of oil production, so specimens like this are mostly of interest to collectors. They're quite pretty under sunlight. It'll make your hands smell if you handle it, but fortunately you can't smell it at all from a distance. I was worried that might be a concern. Anyway, sulfur is rad. I fondly remember making my first batch of gunpowder as a child with a friend's chemistry set. My parents were probably smart not to buy me one, I definitely would have found a way to do something profoundly unsafe. #mineral #mineralspecimen #sulfur #rockhound #crystal #crystals #rottenegg #minerals #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #rockhounds #mineralporn

Mandrake root has been used as a poison, and a medicine for thousands of years. It contains a number of toxic alkaloids that cause a lovely range of effects roughly in line with nerve gasses like Sarin, plus hallucinations. In appropriate quantities it's also been used as a general anesthetic. Its been a useful poison for assassins, as it's commonly available and can be absorbed through the skin, not requiring ingestion to be effective. It's not a fast poison, destroying the kidneys and liver over a period of days to weeks, but it was effective. Accidental mandrake poisonings were also quite common. It has a long historical significance to practitioners of witchcraft as well. Some believed that if IUD pulled a mandrake root from the ground it would scream and anyone who heard it would die. Apparently this led to a particular method for safely removing mandrake roots without hearing them scream. Err, ok. Anyway, this stuff would be steeped in hot water to make a tea that could then be soaked in a cloth and applied to the skin to treat inflammatory conditions such as rheumatism. You'd have to be careful though, if you get too much you're in trouble. #mandrake #mandrakeroot #tea #poison #witchcraft #poison #medicine #ancientmedicine #traditionalmedicine #alkaloid #neurotoxin #poisonous #tea #topical #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Copper IUD contraceptive device by Paragard, model T-380A. IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control available, with failure rates below 1%., and last up to 10 years. IUDs got a bad rap in the 1970s after the Dalkon Shield was found to cause serious harm, by triggering a range of grievous infections like septicemia. Fortunately, modern T-shaped devices are much, much safer, while still being extraordinarily effective. The device is placed into the uterus, with the arms of the T, close to the Fallopian tubes, and the base pointing down, towards the cervix. The string remains attached and hangs down through the cervix. When it's time to remove the IUD, they basically grab the strings, and pull. The copper windings act as a spermicide, preventing fertilization by destroying sperm cells on contact with copper ions suspended in the cervical mucus. As you can see, these things are *cheap* to manufacture, so they're probably the cheapest form of birth control that exists, long term. Insertion takes a few minutes, the device costs a few dollars, contains no hormones, lasts 10 years, requires zero maintenance, is highly effective, has low complication rates, and is easily reversible. What more could you want in a birth control device? Huge thanks to my girlfriend for gifting me this after getting hers replaced with a new one. I know that sounds a little weird, but I'm an unconventional kinda guy, so I think it's pretty damned cool. It's pretty fragile, so its going in a clear box, where it will have to stay. I doubt anyone is gonna want to pick this up and play with it anyway. #iud #birthcontrol #uterus #paragard #contraception #copper #medical #medicaldevice #birth #istandwithpp #pp #plannedparenthood #contraceptive #reproduction #childfree #reproductiverights #familyplanning #gynecology #obgyn #womensrights #womenshealth #larc #healthcare #wellness #feminism #reproductivehealth #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

A watercolor of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade by Lee Boyd Malvo, the child accomplice of John Allen Muhammad, the Beltway snipers who killed 17 people in 3 weeks by shooting them with a sniper rifle through a loophole in the trunk of their car. John Allen Muhammad wanted to recruit an army of disaffected youths, train them to kill, and then send them out into the world. Lee Boyd Malvo was his first convert. I remember the news being absolutely dominated by this for weeks as people were being gunned down almost every day. John Allen Muhammad was executed, but Lee will spend the rest of his life in prison. He was 17 years old during the killing spree, had a troubled childhood, all that stuff you'd expect to be in the background of a 17 year old serial murderer. M49A2 high explosive 60mm mortar shell. The way they work is kind of neat. In the base of the fin assembly there's a primer attached to a 20 gauge shotgun shell filled with ballistite, a combination of nitroglycerin, and nitrocellulose. When the primer hits the firing pin at the bottom of the mortar tube, the primer detonates the ballistite, whose explosive gasses are vented through the little holes in the side of the tail assembly, propelling it out of the tube and onto the target. Those gasses have to fill the entire space between the shell and the tube, which is why mortars being fired make more of a thump sound than a bang. It's basically just a fancy potato gun, except the potatoes carry the propellant. Well, that, and they explode. The base range is a respectable 200-300 meters, but you can "boost" the shot by clipping up to 4 extra bags of propellant to the fins, massively increasing the range to 2000 meters. I have no idea if that's a standard feature of mortar shells, or a quirk, but it's neat as heck. The M49A2 was used from WWII, through the Korean, and Vietnam Wars, before being replaced in 1978. It's blue because it's a training dummy, but I'm not really clear why it's also drilled out and rendered inert. Maybe they do that to all of them just to be sure, I dunno. #mortar #m49 #munition #explosive #artillery #60mm #weapon #war #mortar #militaria #wwii #vietnamwar #koreanwar #shell #collection #wunderkammer #oddities #oddacious #m2 #frag

These things are so fucking cool! They're prism glasses that let you watch tv while lying flat on your back staring at the ceiling! I bought them because they were funny lookin', but when I tried them on I was an instant convert. They're made for people who are bedridden, or who's heads are immobile, but this is seriously my new favorite thing. That they look creepy as hell is just a giant bonus. Everyone should have a pair of these. Seriously, they're like $12 on amazon. May they change your world as they did mine. Neat flying lizard preparation from @artemmortis. They're just so cute, I had to have one. BLU-26/B cluster bomblet from the Vietnam war era. It's about the size of a tennis ball, and would contain about 90 grams of explosive in the steel casing, along with 300 steel balls embedded within it. It's a training dummy, so it doesn't have explosive in it, but I'm not really sure why these aren't blue, like a training dummy should be. it may have been painted by another collector, or it could be a sales sample. Cluster bombs are particularly nasty as about 10% of them fail to detonate on impact, where they sit for years or decades until a farmer comes along plowing a field, or a child finds an interesting looking object, and loses a limb or worse. One single B-52 could drop 25,000 of these in a single bombing run. Some bombing raids in Vietnam involved hundreds of B-52s. That's a lot of fucking bombs. Like, a lot. #bomb #munition #explosion #explosive #vietnam #war #blu26 #clusterbomb #militaria #vietnamwar #cluster #bombing #bombing #raid #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #explode #death

I found this pair of prosthetic hip implants on Craigslist, from a guy selling them as novelty gearshift levers for cars, pretty genius. Brand new, these babies sell for about $7000 each, retail, but on Craigslist, they're about $40. They're made of a fancy-ass alloy of titanium and vanadium, for both corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. The ball joint is actually hollow as well, to keep the weight down. The installation process is insanely brutal. First, the surgeon will cut your leg open, sever all the ligaments holding the joint together to expose the joint, then yank your existing femur out of the hip socket it fits in. Next, they chop off the entire head off of your femur. Now that you're sufficiently disassembled, they slather the end of the implant in bone cement, and hammer it into the softer nougaty center of your femur with a mallet, until the flange is flush with the cut end of the femur. Slap the new joint back in the hip socket, reattach all the ligaments and whatnot, sew you up, and yer done. All that's left is to spend the next 6-8 weeks regaining the ability to stand, or walk. But, at the end of all that, you can actually walk again, so that's cool. Hopefully I never need a hip replacement, but if I do, maybe I'll save $14k if I supply my own prosthetics. #medical #implant #implants #hip #hipreplacement #prosthetics #prosthetic #surgery #femur #socket #ball #titanium #vanadium #science #medicalscience #metal #gearshift #surgical #hips #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #bionic

Allied WWII propaganda leaflet targeting Germans. The contrast in tone between these series of letters from Roosevelt, Churchill, and Eisenhower is interesting. Churchill and Roosevelt play it cool and say "We're not enslaving you Germany, we're freeing you. Chill out, we want to be friends again, we just need to get rid of these dickholes first." Eisenhower is more like "Hi, the Allied military is in charge now, which means I'm in charge. If you got some shit to say, put it in the complaint box. I'm gonna be pretty busy killing/hiring all of these nazis, especially those SS motherfuckers. If you see any, Iemme know!" 45 lb giant copper mask of Lenin, from Vilnius, Lithuania, in the former USSR. When the Soviet Union disintegrated, Lithuania was one of the first to declare independence. They never wanted to be Soviet in the first place, so most of the relics of Soviet rule were looted, scrapped, or sold to collectors. It didn't take them long to do it, either. Large stuff like this was easier to melt for scrap than ship around to collectors, so I think pieces this size are pretty uncommon outside of former USSR territory. It's about 2 feet in diameter, and likely would have been hanging on a wall in a government building of some sort, no idea which one, if any. I love relics of the Soviet Union, having grown up during the Cold War. All empires fall, it's always fascinating when you can watch one go in real time. In a weird way, I feel fortunate to have witnessed it without being inside of it. I heard Trump was gonna hang one of these in the Whitehouse, but Putin demanded a topless portrait of himself instead. #lenin #russia #ussr #soviet #cccp #propaganda #mask #bust #copper #relic #communism #vilnius #lithuania #coldwar #sovietrussia #sovietunion #russian #russianart #russianred #russianstyle #portrait #icon #iconic #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

If you've got blood poisoning, running sores, ulcers, gunshot wounds, have molten metal dumped on you, or suffer other grevious violations of skin integrity, well then good news, my friend, Ulceroid probably won't be the thing that kills you! They don't say what's in it, so I'm not really sure if it "works" or not, but it seems to be some kind of paste that one smears on things like gaping wounds, and serious burns. The ad talks about pulling poison out of wounds, and being able to heal "any sore, no matter of how long standing", so it sounds pretty quacky to me. I'm always attracted to old medicines partially because I enjoy both the contrasts and the similarities to the present. It's weird how some things never really change. We still have the quackery, it just changed its name to "homeopathy". #quack #medicine #oldmedicine #burn #ulcer #bloodpoisoning #marketing #advertising #antique #vintage #murray #homeopathic #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

American propaganda leaflets made for Afghanistan during the American-led invasion in late 2001 and beyond. They essentially say that we'll give you a bunch of money if you're cool with us, and tell us where Osama and his buddies were hiding. Nagasaki/Hiroshima atomic bombing themed ball-in-the-hole game by AC Gilbert from the late 1940s. #ballinthehole #nuclear #atomic #bomb #game #gilbert #nagasaki #hiroshima #atomicbomb #wrong #gamesforkids #vintage #antique #bb #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #japan #wwii #worldwar2 #war #wargame #acgilbert

Pair of cremation tags acquired from @curiosities212 They would be attached to a body in a mortuary, and are designed to survive the cremation process so that a particular pile of ashes can be accurately identified, and kept track of. These tags are unused, but people often find tags like these washing up on beaches. When ashes are spread in the ocean, people often don't realize there's a metal cremation tag inside the urn, so they get dumped into the water along with the ashes. It's customary to return any tags found this way back into the ocean, in respect for the deceased and their family. #cremation #mortuary #death #tag #urn #ashes #cremationjewelry #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #crematorium

Polaris was the first nuclear missile to be launched from a submerged submarine, the USS George Washington, in 1960. The A-1 variant on the left had a range of 1000 miles with a 600kt warhead, and was accurate to within about a mile. Each submarine could carry up to 16 missiles. It was quickly replaced by the A-2 with 50% more range, then the A-3 with a 2500 mile range, and the introduction of multiple warheads at 200kt each. It wasn't quite a MIRV though, since all three warheads would hit the same target just to be extra sure it was obliterated. As the first sub launched nuclear missile, it's pretty revolutionary, but it wasn't accurate enough for use against hardened targets like bunkers, so it was considered a retaliatory counterstrike weapon, not first strike capable. As such, it was mostly targeted at the perimeter defenses of the Soviet Union, cities, airfields, and other softer targets. Today, they've been replaced by the much more capable, reliable, and powerful Trident missile system, the Trident II. #nuclear #missile #model #submarine #polaris #usnavy #navy #militaria #militarymodel #lockheed #atomic #nuke #collection #oddities #wunderkammer #oddacious #coldwar

This is what WWII did to Okinawa. This photograph was taken on May 29th, at 9:50am by American aerial reconnaissance, just hours after the Japanese forces abandoned this area of the front, and fell back to another defensive position. With a magnifier you can see little starfish shapes on the ground, likely the bodies of the dead. Many of those craters were the result of naval bombardment from American battleships. In the background are what remains of Shuri Castle, built in the 1200s. The Japanese army made it their HQ, so it had to be destroyed, taking 800 years of culture with it. If you didn't know this was Okinawa, you might assume it was Hiroshima. We often focus on the destruction wreaked by atomic bombs, but the truth is that this is what total war looks like. Atomic bombs destroy it in one go, as opposed to thousands of bomber raids and battleship bombardments. When Tokyo was firebombed, there was more death and destruction than either of the two atomic weapons. This is what war brings. Death, destruction, pain, and misery. Okinawa was one of the most brutal, bloody campaigns of WWII. The incredible tenacity displayed by Japanese soldiers in defending this territory fed the decision to use atomic weapons on Japan. The prospect of an amphibious invasion of mainland Japan was terrifying both in terms of the cost to Allied lives, but also to Japan, and its people. An invasion would have devastated most, or all of Japan, and led to many, many more civilian deaths, and the widespread destruction of important cultural landmarks like this. #war #wwii #worldwar2 #okinawa #shuricastle #battle #battlefield #reconnaissance #photography #warphotography #death #destruction #tragedy #japan #allies #american #bombing #battleship #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

These are fucking rad. Did you know that In the 1970s, Chicago street gangs carried business cards containing disses to rival gangs, and shoutouts to friendly ones? They would advertise their members, and the street corners, or "sets" that they controlled. There were two main gang alliances, both with ridiculous, terribly unoriginal names. One alliance was called The People, while the other was The Folks. The Gaylords were affiliated with The Folks, and were only all-white street gang in Chicago, so you can imagine that they weren't terribly popular with most other gangs in Chicago. They still exist today, but they ended up on the losing side of most of the gang battles, where they engaged in choreographed dances set to music, and waved knives at each other. The Gaylords were terrible dancers, and lost almost all of their territory over the years. Today, they're relegated to a couple of street corners and not much else. Obviously, these dance battles are dangerous stuff, and many of the gang members died. On some of the cards, you'll see references to gang members when they were still alive, and RIP memorials to those same people after they had died, such as Spooky of The Almighty Schurz People. Occasionally they would draw gang art symbols on the backs of the cards as well that could contain coded messages in the symbols. If you had friends in a gang, or had done favors for a gang, they might give you one of these cards. If someone from the gang, or an affiliated gang hassled you for some reason, you could present your card to demonstrate that you were a friend and they'd likely leave you alone. I'm a particular fan of their disses to rival gangs. "Kilbourn Gaylords are bitches and tricks." I'm a particular fan of their disses to rival gangs. "Kilbourn Gaylords are bitches and tricks." Anonymous "battleflag" used by members of Anonymous in the Los Angeles region during the Operation Chanology protests against Scientology. This flag has seen some shit. It's been witness to all sorts of delightful motherfuckery that I was fortunate enough to witness first hand. I'm a huge fan of the "headless man" logo. It's kind of a shame that most people don't know that it's the "official" logo, not the Guy Fawkes mask. The headless man in a suit, arms behind his back in a power pose, exhudes an air of confidence, authority and mystery. It suggests a shadowy, powerful force, that could be anyone around you. The lack of identity is a powerful construct within Anonymous, where like-minded individuals can band together for a common purpose, without regard to individual identity. It's also evocative of a sort of "Fight Club" mentality, ala the memorable quote, "Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not fuck with us." One beautiful thing about Anonymous is its inclusiveness. Literally anyone can be, or not be Anonymous just by choosing it. That a fundamentally chaotic group such as this was able to create a globally recognizable brand almost overnight is absolutely spectacular, and to be admired. The concepts and ideas behind the group speak to me on a deep and personal level. The group itself has since been heavily infiltrated and manipulated by intelligence and law enforcement organizations around the world. As a protest/hacktivist organization it absolutely scared the pants off governments large and small. I don't consider myself a member, but I've had the pleasure of associating with many people who do, or did. They are some remarkable people with deeply held convictions, powerful ideas, and an earnest desire to make the world a better place, along with a wonderfully demented sense of humor about it all. #anonymous #flag #battleflag #anon #protest #hacktivist #marketing #advertising #banner #brand #headless #headlessman #guyfawkes #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #internet #scientology

Sikhote-Alin meteorites are one of my favorites. They're typically well sculpted with intricate features and wonderfully contorted shapes, like caves, holes, and finger-like extensions. The other variety is shrapnel, violently torn apart as the meteor exploded in the atmosphere. They also don't rust, which is a nice feature in a display piece. It fell in Russia on February 12, 1947 at 10:38am, witnessed falls are always a little more precious because samples can be obtained before they get significantly contaminated by dirty Earth-things. They're one of the few meteorites that's immediately recognizable. You always know when you're looking at a Sikhote-Alin. #meteorite #sikhotealin #iron #nickel #sculpted #minerals #rockhounds #mineralspecimen #space #science #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Pair of improvised shivs from a prison I don't know. These things are no joke, they're both very functional stabbing weapons that will ruin your day. The top one appears to be from some kind of steel edge piece. It's got tack weld marks on the blade, where it used to be attached to another piece of steel, where the edge is folded over so its not sharp and doesn't cut you if you bump into it. Its too straight to have been folded by hand, so it must have just been ripped or cut away from some larger piece of steel like an hvac duct, or a table, or something like that. The bottom one is just a sharpened steel bar. Neither of these is from Corcoran, I just threw the envelope in there cuz it looked cool. Santa Muerte tattoo on pig skin from @artemmortis. I've always wanted one of these, now I need a Jesus Malverde to go beside it. Santa Muerte is essentially the personification of Death, and is prayed to for a number of things generally focusing on life/death. Shes sort of the patron saint of outcasts. She's disavowed by the Catholic Church, but stems from Mesoamerican religions that predates Christianity in the region, so she's persistent. #santamuerte #tattoo #santamuertetattoo #pigskin #cult #catholic #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #tattoosofinstagram #death

World War II German language propaganda newspaper. It was produced by Americans and dropped behind enemy lines on German troops. By October 1944, the War had turned against Germany, Allied troops had liberated France, and most of Belgium, and Italy while the Soviets had reclaimed all of their own turf, and half of Poland. The Allies were rapidly closing on the Rhine river, and about to enter Germany itself. Propaganda is most effective when its mixed with the truth. Naturally, we wanted to tell the German troops about the battles, and territory they were losing, how many of them we were killing, etc. We might even exaggerate a little, or leave out the parts about our own losses. The Allies were going absolutely balls-out at this point, in a desperate race to beat the Russians to Berlin. When a country is losing a war, it's never going to say that to its people. It's always going to tell them things are either going great, or just about to. If they're not, then it's <insert enemy here>'s fault. Sound familiar yet? They're going to diminish the significance of undeniable losses, magnify the effect of wins, etc. This is true for all nations, not just historical ones, and not just during war time. Every one of us is propagandized to on a daily basis from every possible direction. Think about a newspaper like this; what it was for, it's agenda, the intended audience, the things they may be predisposed to believe, etc. How many similarities can you think of with the media, news, and entertainment you consume on a daily basis? The next time you're exposed to it, will you recognize it as you see it? Do you even need to be able to read German to know exactly what I mean? Propaganda is scary as shit, because it fucking works. It works on me, on you, on all of us. The only defense is constant vigilance, and an insatiable curiosity for the truth. Don't trust, verify. Never forget that propaganda is just a fancy word for "lies." #propaganda #wwii #worldwar2 #ww2 #news #newspaper #german #germany #intelligence #psyops #psychology #war #american #allied #leaflet #militaria #military #army #battle #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #deutschland #deutsch

An American propaganda training leaflet. It would be given to American soldiers during their training to show them what a propaganda leaflet would look like, and an example of the common tropes that they would likely exploit. One of the most common is the ol' "While you're here fighting a useless war, your wife/girlfriend back home is getting boned by some other guy, who sent you here to fight his war for him." The intent of of course being to demoralize the troops, and make them a less effective fighting force. By inoculating troops during training, the effect of these tools can be blunted. I'm not sure of the age on this piece. It's either WWII, or the Cold War, I suspect closer to the latter. #propaganda #american #wwii #worldwar2 #coldwar #soviet #ussr #war #marketing #propaganda #wartime #leaflets #soldier #troops #training #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #wife #sweetheart

Stone chopper I made all by myself! My flintknapping skills are rudimentary at best, but it's seriously neat to take a regular ol' rock, and make a useful tool out of it using primitive techniques. It's more than just bashing rocks together though, you have to learn how to remove only the parts of the rock that you don't need, and you don't have a lot of room for mistakes. When Michaelangelo presented his statue of David to the Pope, he was asked how he knew what to cut away. Michaelangelo replied "It's simple, I just remove everything that doesn't look like David." I'm no Michaelangelo, but that's pretty much exactly how this is done. The earliest types of stone tools were just rocks bashed together until you ended up with an edge. It took more than a million years to go from that, to stone toolmaking technologies that involved visualizing the tool you want that's buried in the rock, and removing everything that isn't the tool. This thing is ugly, any experienced flintknapper would probably give me a condescending pat on the head, but I'm really proud of this anyway. With a few years of practice, and blood, I could get good at this. My dream is to be able to pick up two suitable rocks on a beach and make something on the spot. Lemme tell you though, the fragments that come flying off are *crazy* sharp. While making this, a shard of rock popped off, and went right through my finger and out the other side, like a hot knife through butter. I hated wearing gloves because it ruins your manual dexterity, but it's pretty mandatory if you want to keep all your fingers, and flesh attached to your body. #flintknapping #primitive #primitiveskills #chopper #tool #stone #chert #ouch #bloodymess #razorsedge #razorsharp #cut #cutting #blade #flint #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Spent Prismatic Core and Prismatic Blade stone tools. In spite of their simple appearance, prismatic blades are actually some of the most advanced stone tool making technologies. They're not single arrowheads, painstakingly knapped over hours. They're mass produced, disposable tools that can be churned out rapidly in large quantity. The core on the left would have started as a cylinder of obsidian about 3 inches in diameter. A sharp piece of antler would be pressed into a spot near an edge, and then pushed down on with all their weight. If you do it right, a long thin blade will pop right off. The edge on that blade will be so sharp that the finest of scalpels is like cutting with a butter knife in comparison. We're talking about an edge that can be literally one atom thick. Some surgeons even use obsidian blades today, because the cuts are so clean the incision can heal with significantly less scarring. Its neat that something we typically think of as primitive is actually superior to anything modern science and technology can produce. #primitive #primitiveskills #knapping #flintknapping #prismatic #blade #knife #razorsedge #razorsharp #sharp #cut #cutting #tool #stone #surgery #scar #incision #scartissue #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious #rockhound #minerals

You probably recognize Sodium Pentothal as the so-called "truth serum", but did you know it's also one of three drugs in a lethal injection? In low to moderate doses, it reduces inhibition and makes people fairly agreeable. It's not a very good truth serum though, because it's not going to make you tell the truth, so much as it's going to make you tell people what you think they want to hear. It got some play during the MKUltra years in both the US, and Soviet Union, but both ultimately found it mostly ineffective. In very large doses, it's has an anesthetic effect, resulting in unconsciousness. When you're executing someone, you kinda want them to go quietly and peacefully, so they inject them with about 5 grams of sodium Pentothal to knock them out before they top it off with a lethal dose of a benzodiazepine to cause muscle paralysis, and a megadose of potassium chloride to stop the heart. This vial contains 1 gram of sodium Pentothal, about 1/5th of a lethal dose. #truthserum #drug #medical #medicine #lethalinjection #lethal #deathpenalty #coldwar #ussr #cia #mkultra #benzo #drugs #sleep #anesthesia #knockout #sleepytime #inhibition #antique #drugged #wunderkammer #collection #oddities #oddacious

Very famous Camel cigarette ad from ~1940s, "I'd walk a mile for a Camel." It was their slogan for decades, starting in the 1940s, and was a hugely successful campaign. I'm a big fan of dissonant propaganda like this. In "walking a mile" they make a positive association between smoking and your health. The reality, of course, being the opposite as you cough and wheeze your way to the finish line. Deceptive advertising is my favorite kind, and tobacco companies had that shit down pat.
