Finally an #odonate that settled long enough for me to get a close up. The #insects are rather frisky here and will get air borne if even a shadow falls on them. #kolkata #lakelife😎 #dragonfly
Despite bearing a superficial resemblance to the Common Parasol, the male Sultan is twice as large, and is more than capable of preying on smaller dragonfly species. The Sultan is considered widespread but generally rare in Singapore, and is usually seen in forests, or around some ponds with dense vegetation.

After a few weeks of house renovation dust impeding my drawing time, I finally scanned this odonate commission - a male and female Ebony Jewelwing and a female and male Eastern Pondhawk, two North American native species. The entire piece is actually arranged vertically, but it doesn't fit in my scanner so I scanned them individually. Hmm...this layout is actually quite nice...

A male Common Parasol perches on a twig next to a pond. This is one of Singapore's most common dragonfly species, and can be found in many urban freshwater habitats, such as ponds in parks, drains and canals, as well as the edges of reservoirs. They can also be seen hunting above open fields.

Dragonflies play an important role in helping to control mosquitoes and other potential disease vectors; not only are adults supreme aerial predators that target other smaller flying insects, their aquatic nymphs are voracious hunters of other creatures, including mosquito and midge larvae. In turn, dragonflies are preyed upon by a variety of other creatures such as fishes, birds, lizards, and frogs.

Dragonflies and their relatives, the Damselflies, are often used as indicator species. They are active during daylight hours, often very colourful and conspicuous, and a trained eye can readily tell various species apart, making them good subjects for citizen science efforts.

While many species of Dragonflies and Damselflies are very adaptable and are easily found hunting around and breeding in ponds, reservoirs, and drains in urban areas, others are more specialised and are only found in certain habitats. The nymphs of many species are sensitive to changes in parameters such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH, while some species may prefer flowing water or shallow puddles instead of ponds. By surveying the abundance and species diversity of adult Dragonflies and Damselflies, the presence or absence of certain species in a particular area can provide information on habitat quality, while data collected from long-term monitoring can be used as an indicator of the health of wetland ecosystems.

Some dragonflies spend the first 5 years of their life as water dwelling nymphs before molting into airborne winged beauties for just a few weeks before they mate and die. It's remarkable that the creature we know as a dragonfly has an entirely different look for the vast majority of its life.
