A Picture Wing Dragonfly (Rhyothemis variegata) at rest in the morning, on a Rice plant, amidst several acres of Paddy. Just when the Rice kernels are emerging, Skippers and other butterflies abound and lay their eggs on these saplings. Dragonflies, like the Picture Wing, play an important role in controlling the profusion of these insects and their larvae from devouring the crop.
The way to see the life present in a Paddyfield is not from above. All the various organisms are practically hidden in the Paddy's green interspersed in the brown of the irrigated soil below. But squat down and see the Paddy tips at eye level and the plethora of beetles, dragonflies, butterflies, caterpillars and the spiders and their many shaped webs lined in a million droplets of mist, can be seen all in extraordinary contrast to the placid green vista of the paddy...
This one is among most charming looking Damselflies. Three Striped Blue Darts (Pseudogrion decorum) live near lakes and ponds, and their populations wax and wane with the water levels. I suppose their pupae are dormant under the mud and are brought to life by the rains. This species is found only in the cleanest of fresh water bodies and are absent even in and around slightly polluted ones. Hence they are great indicators of water quality....

" A flash of green near my feet, and it was gone. Gone amidst the heavy thickets of greens that flourished along the stream on which I was currently standing. It is in moments like these that you feel a paradoxical pang of both excitement and hopelessness settling in, coupled with the thought that you may not be able to see the one you came looking for even though its somewhere very near." Here is a write-up in search of something other than birds (for a change)- the Stream Glory, a beautiful damselfly that adorns fast-flowing streams and vegetations around them. A Striped Bluedart (Pseudogrion indicum) rests on a withering blade of grass. The larvae of these damselflies awaken with the onset of the monsoons and once they emerge as adults, they live deep within water bodies, amongst the vegetation breaking the water's surface. So after the first rains, when lakes are still wadable, I get in and get some shots of these creatures, before the waters rise....
