Wolfdog Q&A! I can't fit them all! So I'll continue answering this weekend on my posts!
Q: Do state laws change for exotic ownership?
A: Some states are permit only, some states are completely illegal, and some are legal as a a whole. It can also be broken down by city so it is important to check your laws on a local level as well. I'm in a state that doesn't require a permit for my wolfdogs but does for my fox. Then there is usually a list of exotic animals deemed dangerous that are illegal to own such as tigers, pure wolves, bears, ect.
Q: What was something I didn't expect when owning an "exotic " pet?
A: Honestly it's the judgement. The fact people don't seem to understand that captive bred animals are not wild animals. That wolfdogs aren't wild animals.
Q: Are they as friendly as domestic dogs or do they require more socialization to trust people?
A: That depends on a few factors such as content and parents disposition. For example a low content from extremely social parents is more likely to be as friendly as a normal dog than a low who's lines are known for producing a more skittish and anti social animal. That being said, the higher the content the more socialization that's going to be required. There are highs that are more outgoing than some dogs I've met, but they do require the time and dedication to socialization and training. Which is one reason why the higher the content the sooner they go to their new homes.
Q: Comparing huskies to wolfdogs what would be the difference other than how they look?
A: This is a good question. There are tons of overlapping traits when it comes to wolfdogs, and basically any one trait could easily be a dog one. It's the combination that helps determine the content. Now, depending on the content is going to determine the extreme in the differences. A husky is a good example as they often have a high prey drive, are escape artists, destructive, can be hard to off leash train ect. So comparing those traits to a wolfdog the intensity of those traits will be increased. 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
