The Fra Cristobal Range. I was blessed to hunt this mountain twice in separate seasons, attempting to harvest my archery Desert Sheep. My first hunt ended abruptly after I made the tough decision to finish my ram with a rifle after hitting him marginally with an arrow early in the hunt, then chasing him for a week with my bow to no avail. My second hunt was another two week grind and ended without me taking a single shot and having similar feelings coming away from it. Again, amazingly blessed for the opportunity, but no archery Desert Sheep for me and therefore a failure to reach that goal. Fast forward a few years, after the eventual completion of my Grand Slam... I venture back to the Armendaris to help @jen_griego on her way to achieving her own, inspiring, Grand Slam goal. Jen's hunt ended with her admiring this great old Desert Ram and dreams coming true on a mountain where, although I failed to achieve my goal, I was taught more about myself and hunting than I probably realize.
On day 17, we spotted a really nice old ram but lost him until day 20. He and his younger buddy decided to leave the mountain where we found them and travelled several miles to another valley. On the morning of day 20, we got an early start to hunt the new drainage and after about 3 miles of hiking relocated the two rams. No matter how the day ended, it would be my last on the mountain as my hunt came to an end. The rams were in country that put the odds heavily in their favor against a bowhunter. We kept the bow option open as we made the final 500 yard stalk up the mountain through the rocks to get as close as possible. We were hoping that the sheep might feed our way. When it was clear that wouldn't happen, I waited for the old ram to appear in the open at just over 200 yards and took him with a rifle (thanks Glen!). Very proud of the 14 year old broomed warrior that carries good horn mass. Good Lord willing and knees hold up, I'll be back at it next year for another attempt with my bow. @canoloutfitters @dustinroe #NWT#ramdown#canol2017#dallsheephunting#oldram#sitkagear#stoneglacier#kenetrekboots
